The rate change should be made scalable, continuous and real-time based to match exactly to the required data rate for conservation of precious bandwidth. The rate change in multiples of two, as implemented in the existing 3G W-CDMA standard, is undesirable. It is also preferred that the multiple access technique itself should support asymmetrical traffic in up- and down-links to fit connection modes of the Internet services. This paper is a review of our recent research effort to propose an innovative CDMA architecture based on complete complementary codes, which can satisfy major requirements for the future mobile Internet applications. The architecture uses a new \"offset stacked\" spreading technique, based on which both high spectral efficiency and scalable rate-matching are guaranteed. To measure spectral efficiency of the systems, \"spreading efficiency\" (SE) is defined as the information bit(s) conveyed by each chip. All traditional CDMA-based standards offer an SE of 1/N, where N is the processing gain. On the contrary, the SE of the proposed architecture can be made as high as one. As the bandwidth of a CDMA system is determined by its chip width, a high SE means a high spectral efficiency. This paper illustrates that the proposed scheme is well-performing and has a great potential for applications in future wireless communications beyond 3G.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. However, the possibility of an attack compromising the network is also increasing, making the network security critical. Strong authentication protocols are needed to restrict network access to only authorised users. Most existing protocols for authentication and network access are based on centralised authentication using one authentication server or certificate authority that is unconditionally trusted. Despite the use of strong authentication mechanisms, the process is between the user and a single authentication entity. In these protocols, the decision to authenticate or grant service to users is controlled by this single entity. Centralised authentication protocols suffer certain drawbacks. In this paper, a new protocol secure network access protocol (SNAP) is proposed. SNAP increases network security and availability by distributing the trust between several authentication entities.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. The area of a cell is divided into the non-reservation pre-handoff, and handoff zones. As mobile stations move into the pre-handoff zone and is leaving the serving base station, bandwidth is reserved in the target/sub-target cell. The amount of bandwidth to be reserved is dynamically adjusted to reflect the current mobility condition of mobile stations. Performance of the proposed scheme is investigated through OPNET simulation using the 7-cell cellular network where mobile stations with random mobility and variable velocity are assumed. The results show that the proposed MDRR scheme can provide small connection dropping probability and achieve better bandwidth utilization when appropriate parameters are chosen. The fixed bandwidth reservation (FBR) scheme is compared with the MDRR scheme with non-preemption and preemption services.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. In hot spots where users need high speed data services operators can deploy low-cost high-speed WLANs, e.g. 802.11, to cover hot-spots. This paper proposes a possible architecture of integrating UMTS and 802.11 WLAN. The architecture allows a mobile node to maintain data (PS) connection through WLAN and voice (CS) connection through UMTS in parallel. This is especially attractive because WLAN is currently used primarily for high-speed best-effort data service only.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. One such protocol, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) enables IP networks with quality of service to be traffic engineered well. Rerouting of label switched paths (LSP) is caused due to link or node failure or recovery, connection admission or load balancing. In this paper, we deal with the problem of reroute sequence planning of LSPs. We introduce a number of new heuristic approaches, and refinements into the existing ones, which are evaluated by simulation using data from real network topologies. Results show that two of the new heuristic approaches behave better than the existing ones and improve the performance.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. This is due to the success of IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology, which allows the extension of local area networks by mobile stations and establishing of ad-hoc networks. The latter does not need any pre-installed infrastructure. Nodes communicate directly or the traffic is relayed over intermediate wireless nodes. While there are only few nodes the performance of the network is acceptable, but with increasing number of nodes their performance of the network decreases. If TCP is used additional performance degradation is expected. However, TCP is necessary since most applications and application level protocols are based on it. The poor performance of TCP in wireless networks has several reasons, especially the communication medium with high bit error rates (BER) and TCP's optimization on fixed networks. In this paper, we present an analysis of TCP's performance in wireless and ad-hoc networks. We emphasize the role of MAC layer retransmissions without breaking the end-to-end semantic of TCP. For this, we introduce the dynamic short retry limit, which allows the adaptation of RT-S/CTS retransmission.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications. The proposed algorithm (DYLBA - dynamic load balancing algorithm) implements a local search technique where the basic move is the modification of the route for a single label switched path. In this paper we propose and evaluate efficient path selection algorithms for survivable optical networks with shared protection. Two distributed path selection algorithms are presented. The first approach maintains global information on network resource usage to determine link sharability and compute the optimal shared paths. The second approach, however, only relies upon local information maintained at each node. Subsequently, we present an analytical model to evaluate the performance of these path selection algorithms and show its accuracy through numerical examples.","PeriodicalId":356589,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Eighth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications.
