We consider this approach to have many benefits, but we also recognize that there is information in software projects that does not readily lend itself to low-tech types of visualization. Different characteristics of the code base is one such example. In this paper, we outline metrics functions that can take advantage of more advanced information of the development artifacts and provide the lean or agile team with partially automated decision support for quality assurance actions.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134492280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The created models are a constitutive part of the software specification that serves as guideline for the implementation and the test of software systems. In order to verify the functionality which is defined within the specification documents, the domain experts need to perform an acceptance test. Hence, they have to generate test cases for the acceptance test. Since domain experts usually have a low level of software engineering knowledge, the test case generation process is challenging and error-prone. In this paper we propose an approach to generate high-level acceptance test plans automatically from business processes. These processes are modeled as UML Activity Diagrams (ACD). Our method enables the application of an all-path coverage criterion to business processes for testing software systems.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"52-54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116772250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular log analysis is often required to understand how the system is behaving during execution. For example it is common for system administrators to collect and view logs from different hardware and software components to gain an understanding into system behavior, especially during activities such as problem determination. A recent research project in this area, the Run Time Correlation Engine (RTCE), provides a framework for run-time correlation of distributed log files in a scalable manner for enterprise applications. The framework has been designed for enterprise applications consisting of distributed software components and is in use in real industry environments. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the RTCE can scale for cloud computing environments where providers of cloud services will require large architectures (e.g. data centers) to deploy such services.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"1989 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125494172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of this paper is to understand the probable impact of changes required, in order to then understand how current TNMSs are able to respond to the changes, and thus evolve. To evaluate the nature, complexity and risks of changes to TNMSs, we have used an evolutionary taxonomy and methodology which classifies change according to complexity. The data for the evaluation is based on the changes to the architecture of networks and TNMSs over the past 20 years. We have identified the major dimensions of change, and evaluated how TNMSs have responded to those changes.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127379524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Range Queries Based on a Structured Segment Tree in P2P Systems","authors":"Ye-In Chang, Chen-Chang Wu, Jun-Hong Shen, Tzu-Lun Huang","doi":"10.1109/ECBS.2010.17","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ECBS.2010.17","url":null,"abstract":"Range queries will find any data item whose value within the range. The Distributed Segment Tree method (DST) is a famous method for range queries in P2P systems. It uses a segment tree to preserve the local continuity of the range data at each node based on the Distributed Hash Table (DHT) logic. It can be applied in any DHT-based P2P system. However, data distribution of the DST method may cause overlapping. When searching a data range, the DST method sends more number of requests than what is really needed. Although the DST method designs the Downward Load Stripping Mechanism, the load on peers may still not be balanced. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method called Structured Segment Tree (SST) that does not use the DHT logic but embeds the structure of the segment tree into the P2P systems. Each peer in our proposed P2P system represents a node of a segment tree. Data intervals at the same level are continuous and will not overlap with each other. In addition, we add sibling links to preserve the spatial locality and speed up the search efficiency. From our simulation, we have shown that the SST method routes less number of peers to locate the requested range data than the DST method. We have also shown that the load based on our method is more balanced than that based on the DST method.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129289791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such architectures should meet main dependability requirements – which include high availability and high reliability. The objective of this work is to describe a software infrastructure, called Archmeds, that operates in the communication between a web service's clients and the web service itself, in order to implement fault tolerance techniques that make effective use of redundancy out of undependable existing services. The Archmeds infrastructure was designed to be remotely accessible via web services technology, so that it can be easily reused during the implementation of different web services-based service oriented architectures. The proposed solution was validated using web services-based applications implemented for the BioCORE biodiversity project. The results show that Archmeds is able to mediate requests to web services ensuring fault tolerance of their responses in the presence of failure scenarios.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126453290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is enabled by the transformation of non-hierarchical tool independent performance models into hierarchical models of the analytical approach FMC-QE (Fundamental Modeling Concepts for Quantitative Evaluation), through a series of graph transformations. The method employs the so called Model-Driven Performance Engineering (MDPE) architecture. This architecture permits generation of input for different kinds of performance analysis tools, such as tools for discrete event simulations, via ``pushing-a-button''. While FMC-QE delivers a time efficient analytical performance evaluation mechanism with approximations for non-product form problems, discrete event simulations support models with arbitrary complex control flow structures at the cost of longer execution times. Therefore, we propose to employ the analytical approach for a sensitivity analysis, combined with simulations for detailed what-if questions and process optimizations. This approach is evaluated based on an industrial case study.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"268 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120976092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a set of challenges to be addressed in order to realize the true potential of current WSNs. The first challenge concerns the effort needed to develop WSN application since the developers are required to know several sensor network and protocol specific details. The second main challenge is related to the fact that the most of existent WSNs provide data in proprietary formats that can be accessed by final user only through a set of static predefined queries or a graphical interface, hindering the widespread use of WSN data in different applications. The third challenge concerns the semantic gap between the representation of the high-level application requirements and the low-level data provided by sensor nodes. We argue that, by adopting a SOA approach based on integrating WSN to the concept of web mashups we will be able to leverage the widespread use of WSNs.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"277 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124217222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many information fusion applications inherently execute real-world action as a result of combining simulations and real hardware or end-users. We articulate the need for a high degree of fault tolerance for systems dealing with real-world actions. In this paper we elaborate on why traditional simulation infrastructures is not sufficient and provide a solution this problem. Our approach include usage of a whiteboard architecture that serve as a communication layer as well as storage system. The whiteboard architecture is implemented on a distributed active real-time database prototype called DeeDS NG. The paper describes the different degrees of fault tolerance available; ranging from fault masking down to best effort fault tolerance, depending on the particular needs of a system. For the future we are planing a series of simulation experimentsto validate our claims concering the usfulness of the whitebord architecture described in the paper.","PeriodicalId":356361,"journal":{"name":"2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer Based Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129769327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
