Many constraints are exercised in a more diffuse manner in the daily interventions of healthcare staff. Informal coercion refers to practices whereby the decisions of people receiving psychiatric care are guided without explicit recourse to legal procedure. While mental illnesses such as psychosis and depression affect a large part of the population, their link to crime, particularly homicide, remains poorly documented, even though studies reveal a high incidence of psychopathy among violent offenders. In the second case, they are tried and a reduction in sentence is applicable according to certain criteria.
