To achieve maize self-sufficiency in the country we need to shift from openpollinated varieties to hybrids in potential pockets of middle hills. Coordinated varietal trials on hybrids were conducted for three consecutive years from 2016/17 to 2018/19 across the middle hills during summer to identify high-yielding, biotic and abiotic stresses resistant/tolerant single crosses that fit into the existing rainfed cropping system. We evaluated fifteen, nine, and ten genotypes in 2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19, respectively. Trials were replicated thrice using a randomized complete block design with a unit plot size of four rows of 4-m long. Based on acceptable grain yield, anthesis to the silking interval, ear position, and Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) and Grey leaf spot (GLS) reaction, CAH1715 (9.12 t ha), RML-4/RL-111(8.72 t ha), RML98/RL-105 (8.25 t ha), RL-150/RL-111 (8.18 t ha), RL-36/RL-105 (8.04 t ha), CAH1521 (7.67 t ha) and Rampur Hybrid-10 (7.65 t ha) were identified promising. These genotypes will be promoted to farmers' field trials and other participatory variety selection activities.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125496955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An animal trial was arranged to quantify the sum of daily intake and outgo of 10 individual animals separately. Regular dung and urine were collected in a separate bucket and weighed at every 24-hours interval using a digital weighing balance. Laboratory scale anaerobic digestion of solid dung was continued up to 60 days and the total gas and slurry production was quantified. Results showed that about 7.84 kg feed DM and 0.83 kg N were consumed by each animal daily of which 33% of consumed feed volume became lost in solid dung where the excreted DM extent was 25%. In the case of nitrogen, the losing range was 42.2%. 1kg solid dung mixed with an equal amount of water produced 0.03 cubic meter biogas and 1.86 kg bio-slurry from the digestion anaerobically. The gas production trend was somewhat slow in the first week which started to increase up to 4 week. Only 27.78% DM of supplied feedstock was used during gas production and the remaining portion come out from the digester as residue. The DM and N of fresh bio-slurry was 7.0 and 2.31% respectively and the recovered N in the fresh slurry was 100 times higher than fresh dung. The amount of lost feed nitrogen and its future probable potentiality can be defined through this study.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127275810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A completely randomized block design (RCBD) with four replications and nine treatments were used with three different doses of Nitrogen (260, 200 and 140 Kg ha) as factor A, and three doses of Boron (1.7, 1.1 and 0.5 Kg ha) as factor B. In case of Nitrogen, all the morphological and yield parameters were recorded maximum from 260 Kg Nitrogen ha at harvest and those parameters were recorded minimum from 140 Kg Nitrogen ha at harvest. In case of Boron, all the morphological and yield parameters except curd diameter were recorded maximum from 1.7 Kg Boron ha at harvest and those parameters were recorded minimum from 0.5 Kg Boron ha at harvest. In case of combined effect, the highest curd yield (40.55 t ha) and lowest curd yield (34.05 t ha) were obtained from N1B2 and N3B3 respectively. Meanwhile, maximum curd dry matter (7.04 %) and minimum curd dry matter (5.39%) were obtained from N3B1 and N3B3 respectively. N1B3 accounted for the highest (19.33 cm) curd diameter which was statistically identical with all the other treatments except N3B3. N3B3 accounted for the minimum curd diameter (15.35 cm). Therefore, it can be concluded that the maximum curd yield and maximum curd diameter can be obtained from treatment N1B2 (260 Kg ha + 1.1 Kg ha).","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117241306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was designed to perform cost-benefit analysis, assess the current marketing situation, and perform the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. Both primary and secondary data were collected for this study. A total sample size of 120 farmers from two rural municipalities (Binayee Tribeni and Bungdikali) was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Similarly, 25 traders, 10 consumers, 5 agrovets and 3 middlemen were also surveyed. Secondary data were collected from municipalities, Agriculture Knowledge Centre, MOAD (Ministry of Agriculture Development), online websites, and library sources. Results revealed that the benefit-cost ratio was 3.22 in the study area. The market margin and net profit were NRs. 37 kg and NRs. 674560.4 ha, respectively. The producer’s share in the consumer’s price was 38.33%. This study showed the unavailability of inputs in time was the most serious problem during production followed by disease and insect outbreak. The major problem associated with marketing was the perishable nature of the product followed by a low price.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133308185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differences in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), canopy temperature depression (CTD), and grain yield were evaluated for 14 hybrid maize genotypes at Sundarbazar, Lamjung, Nepal. During a growing season (May to September, 2019), the NDVI was measured using a Greenseeker handheld sensor to predict in-season yield and nitrogen (N) recommendations. The CTD was measured using a Fluke infrared thermometer to estimate yield and determine heat resistant genotypes. Both NDVI and CTD showed significant positive relationships with grain yield. For the NDVI, the coefficient of determination (R) were 0.66, 0.52, 0.76, and 0.49 at 15, 30, 45, and 60 days after sowing (DAS), respectively. For the CTD, R values were 0.41, 0.45, 0.59, and 0.58 at 15, 30, 45, and 60 DAS, respectively. Nitrogen (N) requirement from the NDVI-based N calculator for the yield potential under the farmers’ nutrient management levels, regardless of genotypes, was nearly half of the recommended N dosages. The genotypes with negative CTD values (RML-11-2/ RML18, RL-35-1/RL-105, and RL-24-0/RL-111) were particularly prone to heat stress, while all other genotypes were heat stress-resistant. The results indicated that top dressing of ~54kg N ha is required at 45 DAS. Nitrogen requirements decreased as crop growth progressed towards the reproductive stage. Results indicated that 45 DAS was an appropriate time for the top dressing of N, and the application of N at a later stage of crop growth had a smaller advantage.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129354726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The best selection of appropriate genotypes for given ecology can contribute to boosting up the total production. To identify suitable hybrids for the mid-hills and Terai region, series of coordinated farmers' field trials and demonstrations were carried out at respective eco-zones of Nepal for three consecutive years from 2016/17 to 2018/19. Six to eight promising single cross hybrids developed by the National Maize Research Program were evaluated with P3533, Rajkumar, and CP808 as commercial checks. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design. Pakhribas, Kabre, Khumaltar, Lumle, Salyan, Surkhet, and Dailekh represented the mid-hill and Maharanijhoda, Tarahara, Belachapi, Sagarnath, Dumarwana, Parawanipur, Rampur, and Nepalgunj represented the Terai and inner Terai. CP808 and CAH1715 produced a higher grain yield of 8122 and 7566 kg ha at mid-hills and Terai, respectively under coordinated farmers' field trials. RML-86/RML-96 out-yielded with a grain yield of 7319 kg ha in the demonstration at Terai in 2018/19. Based on two to three years' yield data across different eco-zones of Nepal, it was concluded that the Nepali hybrids mainly RML-95/RML-96, RML-86/RML-96, and Rampur Hybrid-6 can produce an average yield more than 6700 kg ha. Experimental results showed that RML-95/RML96 and RML-86/RML-96 were most stable for grain yield in the mid-hill while in Terai and inner Terai, P3396 and Rampur Hybrid-10 showed good stability. These results indicate the expanding scope of such hybrids across the respective eco-zones.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133403119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first purpose of this experiment is to observe the physiological and chemical changes occurred in litchi fruits at postharvest period for using low temperature (4 °C) and polypropylene bags. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 replications. In case of low temperature (4 °C), at 3 rd day of storage the condition of peel was the best of all (pulp to peel ratio 4.48), minimum dry matter content (16.71%), minimum pulp pH (3.70), maximum titratable acidity (0.48%); at 9 th day of storage maximum total soluble solids (19.53 ºBrix); disease incidence (0.00%) and disease severity (0.00%) was found at all the storage period. In case of various thickness of polypropylene bags, the lowest dry matter content (16.87%), the lowest rate of TSS (18.30 ºBrix), highest titratable acid content (0.48%) were found in litchis kept in 75µ PP bags at 3 rd day of storage; the lowest rate of disease incidence (0.00%) and disease severity (6.67%) in litchis kept in 75µ PP bags at 2 nd and 8 th day of storage. The lowest pulp to peel ratio (4.46) and the maximum pH of fruit pulp (4.13) were observed in litchis kept in 100µ thickness of PP bag at the 9 th day of storage. A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted on two highly weathered tropical soil orders (Ultisols and Entisols) to investigate the effects of some of the most important of these factors (various levels of Phosphorus (P), lime, and Zn) on Zn fractions in six tropical paddy soils. The sequential fractionation procedure was used to determine soils Zn fractions after 30 days of submerged incubation threaten by the aforementioned factors. The non-residual and available fractions (water-soluble plus exchangeable (WE) and organic complexes (Org)) increased by Zn treatments about 1.29 to 2.65 times, and 1.7 to 4 times, respectively and decreased with increasing lime application levels about 9 to 30%, and 3 to 37%, respectively, whereas the non-residual and non-available (amorphous (Amor) and manganese oxides (MN)) and the residual fractions increased with the increasing level of applied P and lime. The effects of P, lime, and Zn applications on Zn fractions were similar for all soils. The application of P plus lime was more effective in reducing available Zn fractions and increasing non-available fractions than the separate application of P or lime between 30 to 70%. It can be concluded that at the studied soil conditions and to avoid Zn deficiency in rice paddy fields due to P and lime application, Zn fertilizer should be applied more than rice nutrition requirements to overcome converted Zn to the unavailable fractions.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"22 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125001587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was conducted under two field conditions i.e., drought stress and non-stress conditions. Grain yield was recorded in both experiments stress (Ys) and non-stress (Yns) at maturity. From grain yield data, some drought tolerance indices such as Stress Tolerance Index (STI), Stress Susceptibility Index (SSI), Drought Tolerance Efficiency (DTE%), Yield Stability Index (YSI), Mean Productivity index (MPI), Geometric Mean Productivity (GMP) were calculated. A genotypic correlation was also calculated for grain yield and all indices. Grain yield under stress conditions (Yns) was positively and significantly correlated with MRP, MPI, GMP and STL. Similarly, a positive and significant association has also been observed between grain yield under stress condition and MPI, MRP, STL and GMP. So, they were the best predictor of potential yield Yns and Ys than SSI, DTE, YSI. It is increasing in the mid-hills of Nepal, and it leads to labor scarcity in agriculture. This study explored the effects of outmigration on maize production. The study was conducted at Rolpa Municipality and Sunil Smriti Rural Municipality, Rolpa district, Nepal. A total of 100 households with 50 respondents from migrant households and 50 respondents from non-migrant households were selected using a random sampling technique. Key informants interview, focus group discussion, and the household survey was used to collect data. Both descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used for the analysis. Results showed that the productivity of maize in non-migrated households was 2.93 t ha -1 which was significantly higher than that in migrated households (2.45 t ha -1 ). The maize income was decreased by US$ 19.41 in each individual outmigration. The 20% of remittance was used for food and clothing whereas the least share (5%) was invested in agricultural inputs. The adoption of mechanized technology was not significantly affected by remittance. The women's drudgery in the migrated households was found higher as compared to that in non-migrated households. Along with outmigration, it was observed that there was an increasing trend of land abandonment and exit from agriculture in the survey site. Therefore, the government should implement a policy which encourages people to invest remittance in agriculture specifically in the mechanized system that saves time, money, and drudgery.","PeriodicalId":355533,"journal":{"name":"Azarian Journal of Agriculture","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124010808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
