This barrier to the adoption of formal modelling techniques can be significantly reduced if the process algebra is replaced with a graphical notation supported by a model generation tool. However, whilst having a diagrammatic base for the language appeals to the novice modeller, the diagrams can become cluttered for larger models. In this paper we address the issues of how to add hierarchical features to a graphical language without losing the fundamental benefits and appeal of having the graphical interface to the language. We illustrate these ideas using an existing formal modelling language","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004. One way of achieving this distribution is through the use of exclusion zones and restriction, resulting in a method called restricted random testing (RRT). Recent investigations into the RRT method have revealed several interesting and significant insights. A method of reducing the computational overheads of testing methods by partitioning an input domain, and applying the method to only one of the subdomains, mapping the test cases to other subdomains, has recently been introduced. This method, called mirroring, in addition to alleviating computational costs, has some properties which fit nicely with the insights into RRT, offering solutions to some possible shortcomings of RRT. In this paper we discuss the RRT method and additional insights; we explain mirroring; and we detail applications of mirroring to RRT. The mirror RRT method proves to be a very attractive variation of RRT","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004. A TUF, which is a generalization of the classical deadline constraint, specifies the utility of completing an application activity as an application-or situation-specific function of that activity's completion time. With TUF time constraints, timeliness optimality criteria can be specified in terms of accrued (e.g., summed) activity utilities. This work overviews past and recent advances on adaptive resource management for dynamic time-critical systems using UA algorithms. Emerging challenges and new research directions are also identified.","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004. Results known from state-based conformance testing and graph theory are used and extended to construct algorithms for test case generation and selection to cover the behavioral model of the system under test (SUT). The test case selection on the basis of the established model is ruled by an adequacy criterion, which provides a measure of how effective a given set of test cases is in terms of its potential to reveal faults. The approach is specification-oriented; i.e., the underlying model represents the system behavior interacting with the user's actions, that are viewed here as events.","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004. Without realistic and objective management, the software development process cannot be managed in an effective way. However, difficulty in assessment of project attributes leads a project into failure. Therefore, it is essential to keep providing objective assessment of project attributes as software development evolves. Another important aspect of a software development project is to know how much it will cost. And predicting development effort is central to the project management. However, effort prediction is one of the most difficult tasks in project management. We use Bayesian approach to update productivity and predict effort based on the updated productivity. In this work we describe an extended tool that we added to PAMPA 2 (Project Attributes Monitoring and Prediction Associate) to help manage a project.","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004. We have previously shown there is a significant linear relationship between code chum, a set of synthesized metrics, and the rate at which faults are inserted into the system in terms of number of faults per unit change in code chum. A limiting factor in this and other investigations of a similar nature has been the absence of a quantitative, consistent, and repeatable definition of what constitutes a fault. The rules for fault definition were not sufficiently rigorous to provide unambiguous, repeatable fault counts. Within the framework of a space mission software development effort at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) we have developed a standard for the precise enumeration of faults. This new standard permits software faults to be measured directly from configuration control documents. Our results indicate that reasonable predictors of the number of faults inserted into a software system can be developed from measures of the system's structural evolution. We compared the new method of counting faults with two existing techniques to determine whether the fault counting technique has an effect on the quality of the fault models constructed from those counts. The new fault definition provides higher quality fault models than those obtained using the other definitions of fault","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004. Traditional capability description systems are inadequate in capturing dynamic changes in the environment. We propose the Toibox DVMS system, a multi-embedded database system that provides an integrated database view of computing devices. The integrated views are materialized; updates over the view provoke relevant operations for the specified devices. The materialized views are decentralized and incrementally maintained by data dissemination. This work presents the design of the Toibox system, based on our initial prototype implementations.","PeriodicalId":355273,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2004.
