In this study, we examined the color appearance of fabrics with various surface character istics and the effect of illumination and spectral distribution on texture impression. We first evaluated the color appearance and texture impression of the fabric with various surface characteristics under different illuminance levels. We then evaluated the color appearance and texture impression of fabric under illumination by changing color rendering by spectral distribution. The evaluation of the color appearance of the fabric was more likely determined only by color saturation and colorfulness than the difference in the surface characteristics of the fabric. The texture impression of the fabric was also affected by the difference in the surface characteristics of the fabric (especially with or without specular reflection) in addition to the dif ferences in saturation and colorfulness. Under lower illuminance, the fabric tended to be evaluated as smooth because the visual-acuity reduction due to the low illuminance under dim light reduced the ability of the observer to recognize the fabric surface structure. It is thought that this affected the evaluation of texture impression.","PeriodicalId":35437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (Shomei Gakkai Shi)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43309011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This necessity has restricted the type of psychological experiments that can be realized. In this study, electrically controllable polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) was applied for a continuously tuned diffuser. This illumination system using PDLC finely tunes light quality, which influences shadow quality. Though light quality can only be tuned by finely controlling applied voltage to the PDLC, the light quality is not proportional to the controlled applied voltage. To construct an interface based on the magnitude of shadow softness (i.e., the light quality), the magnitude estimation (ME) method was used to estimate the relationship between the magnitude of shadow softness and applied voltage to the PDLC. When the applied voltage was adjusted with equal intervals in the magnitude of shadow softness obtained by ME, the shadows resulting under the illumination system using PDLC were felt at almost equal intervals in the shadow softness. Although this proposed protocol for constructing a light-quality tunable illumination system using PDLC may be incomplete at this stage, it is expected to motivate new research into light and shadow quality. In this study, we constructed a lighting booth based on an LED spectrally tunable light source (LSTL) that implemented a simple forced air-cooling system. The LSTL was composed of a UV-LED, single color LED, and quasi-yellow LED to cover the wavelength range from 340 to 800 nm. To compensate for the lack of appropriate green LEDs in the wavelength range from 520 to 625 nm, the LSTL used the quasi-yellow LED, which was made by cutting the blue spectrum of a white LED with a long-pass optical filter. The reconstructed spectrum was more approximate CIE standard illuminant than a D65 fluorescent lamp, and the fluctuation of optical intensity was of considerable well property. In addition, we also discussed advantages of and improvements enabled with LSTL through a comparison with D65 standard fluorescent lamps.","PeriodicalId":35437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (Shomei Gakkai Shi)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2150/jieij.190000585","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46932689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The polished metal pieces are used as the sample set.The prediction formula was obtained based on the reference value measured by the conventional method, and the prediction error of the prediction formula was verified by applying the sample of unknown surface roughness. In addition, we confirmed that the prediction accuracy improves by limiting the range for constructing the prediction formula. This method enables us to quickly detect the surface roughness by using a very simple configuration and a simple analysis method. A system that uses the method can be constructed calibration curve of surface roughness.","PeriodicalId":35437,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (Shomei Gakkai Shi)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2150/JIEIJ.190000570","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41849645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
