Based on the diffusion of innovations theory proposed by E. M. Rogers, this paper investigates the attitude of Swiss university students (n = 2,775) regarding health-related e-service trends. The paper also investigates the impact of compatibility attributes on the adoption of health-related e-services, applying a case study research methodology based on an e-survey and cross-tabulation for the data analysis. Results show that health wikis, online health accounts and rating tools for care providers were highly rated by the students. Online forums and online patient communities seem to be increasing in popularity, whereas e-services providing only company/product information were generally rather poorly rated. Furthermore, the study finds that compatibility attributes have a significant positive effect on the adoption of online health accounts and when students adopt one health-related e-service they tend to adopt another. Understanding the perceptions of different customer groups can support the development of more customer-oriented health-related e-services that have a higher potential of being accepted and utilised by customers.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127770607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of her responsibilities was to check that the chambermaids and cleaners had left each room in a pristine condition. The hotel’s general manager told her there was only one way to inspect that standards were being maintained: you had to lie down on the bed, and in the bath, to have the same view as the guests and to be able to check if there were any embarrassing stains, cobwebs, or unclean spots anywhere. And she went off to lie down in 50 or 60 baths and beds, day after day. The relevance of this anecdote still holds true. Between 1996 and 2006, I was an inpatient in six hospitals in England and Wales and a regular outpatient in two others. I might have been an NHS employee for 20 years, but it was only when I spent time in hospital beds and baths that I was able to gain valuable insight that only patients can obtain. I have seen it all: the good, the bad and the just about acceptable, and this may be the account of a former health service manager and a current academic, but above all it is the account of a patient — a patient who can look at the health service through a relevant diagnostic lens. This opinion piece is the account of a patient who is an ardent supporter of the NHS. What is written is fair and balanced: the dedication and accomplishments of clinicians, managers and other staff are acknowledged — they did, after all, twice save my life. The case study also recognises that, ‘In most cases, it would be wrong to blame individuals. The systems that have been set up create the conditions in which this behaviour is the rational result of the incentives’.1 Opinion paper","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114908074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper outlines the development and early implementation of a strategy deployment framework using Hoshin Kanri principles. Hoshin Kanri is a Japanese phrase that describes a systematic approach to deploying strategies to ensure alignment between strategy and implementation. These principles have been used very successfully by world-class private sector companies. The first part of the paper defines Hoshin Kanri principles, explores their history and how it is the critical success factor for many world-class organisations. This is followed by a case study description of how these principles were used to develop and implement the NHS North East's objectives, goals, initiatives and monitoring metrics framework.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130528133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Herbal Medicines Regulations were drawn up in 2004 but implementation of the Directive is not required until 2011. With the date still some way off, the regulations would appear to have had little impact upon the herbal industry. Yet, the reality is that the new requirements for those manufacturing herbal medicinal products will demand preparation before compliance is possible. Manufacturers relying on the exemptions provided under section 12 of the Medicines Act may no longer be in a position to do so. A new Traditional Herbal Registration Scheme has been launched and manufacturers wanting their products to be included will need to apply to the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority. Changes in legislation at the European level have also meant that the question of who is a medical practitioner for the purpose of prescribing herbal medication has been raised afresh. The answer to this question may require further regulation, whether by legislative or other means.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121831769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technical developments may result in better clinical outcomes but come at a cost. Radiotherapy services in the UK are often operating at or near capacity with no slack in the system. A balance between technical perfection and reasonable cost of service provision has to be struck. Eighty per cent of UK radiotherapy departments are now equipped to deliver precision treatments which conform precisely to the shape of the tumour in the individual patient. The benefits are an increase in the cure rate and a reduction in long-term side effects due to the unnecessary irradiation of normal tissues. The delivery of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with image guidance (IGRT) takes more staff time and is therefore more costly than conventional radiotherapy. Such precision is normal practice in Europe and North America but has only been partially implemented in the UK. This paper provides commissioners with a guide to the technology and its implementation together with an appreciation of its likely benefit.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129163787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This diversity gives rise to differing expectations regarding the role of wireless technology in healthcare. An international project on the future of wireless healthcare collected expert views on the needs, goals and challenges of wireless technologies and solutions for improving healthcare. This paper presents the results of two surveys and face-to-face interviews with 120 experts in the USA and Finland in order to compare expert points of view in these very different markets. In general, the experts of both countries believe that ICT is not used efficiently in the healthcare industry and that there is a lack of useful mobile solutions for end users. Finnish experts emphasise outpatient and home healthcare needs. The US experts give a stronger emphasis to wireless access to patient records and medical information and wireless patient monitoring, while the Finnish experts emphasise simple alarm/call buttons, sensor belts and wristbands, and comfortable home monitoring. The experts from both countries strongly emphasise the importance of integration and interoperability for the full range of devices as well as robustness and user-friendliness.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127980061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It reviews official legislation on cost-sharing in Germany from 1883 to 2008, and provides a structured literature review on the efficiency and equity of cost-sharing. First introduced in 1923, cost-sharing has become a widespread instrument in social health insurance regulation since the 1980s. Indeed, to contain rapidly increasing costs, some form of cost-sharing is now used in every sector of the German health system. However, these cost-sharing measures have failed to improve allocative efficiency or equity, instead simply increasing the burden of health expenditure on patients, households and employees. That policy makers are declaring these short-term cost-shifting measures to be a success is a particularly worrying trend as it might make such reforms attractive to policy makers in other countries.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114695833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After initial policy hostility, there is now significant momentum for change, and draft legislation is currently being discussed to enable this to happen in a series of local pilots (the Health Bill 2009). Against this background, this paper explores lessons from social care individual budget pilot sites in order to set out some of the key barriers and success factors likely to influence proposed healthcare pilots.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128738345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally the industry has relied heavily on word of mouth. As resources dwindle and costs continue to climb it becomes increasingly important to develop a communications programme that allows for effective communication at the maximum number of 'levels of comprehension' in order to keep information flowing to patients while minimising staff effort. Effective communication impacts revenues, staff load, patient throughput, equipment utilisation, patient safety, risk management and patient satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127557064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is unclear how pharmaceutical promotional activities, such as direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) and physician detailing, influence the efficacy of these policies. This study sought to estimate the extent to which such policies could reduce the use of ED medication in the face of pharmaceutical promotions. It determined the dates of cost-containment policies in 35 states and the District of Columbia from 2000 through 2005, and used the generalised estimating equation to estimate the impact of pharmaceutical promotions and cost-containment policies on ED medication use. Higher spending on DTCA was associated with increased ED medication utilisation, but the impact of DTCA was less significant when PA policy was in place. The interaction between spending on detailing and PA was however significant, suggesting that higher spending on detailing significantly increases total ED medication utilisation when PA is implemented. PA and dispensing limit policies are associated with a reduction in ED medication utilisation in the Medicaid population in the presence of pharmaceutical promotions, but PA policies are less effective when the medication is heavily promoted to physicians. Policy makers should consider that cost-containment policies may be differentially sensitive to manufacturers' promotional strategies.","PeriodicalId":354315,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Management & Marketing in Healthcare","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128740861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
