The two degenerate modes are excited by moving the gaps between the ends of the two open stubs to obtain perturbation effect. No extra perturbation element is needed resulting in flexibility in tuning dual-mode characteristic and a compact structure. The proposed dual-mode dual-band bandpass filter operating at 1.8GHz and 4.6GHz is simulated, fabricated and measured. The 3dB fractional bandwidths are 2.5% and 4.3% for the two passbands respectively. This technique can be applied to analyze the passive FSS (frequency selective surface) type periodic structure with identical elements, or the reflectarray and transmitarray type antennas that are phased to radiate EM fields focused in the near zone of the array aperture. The simulation by HFSS gives the bandwidth for VSWR lower than 1.5 of 7.6% (S11) and 8.8% (S22), respectively, at the design frequency of 125 GHz. The isolation is achieved more than 50 dB over the bandwidth. Consequently, a uniform magnetic field distribution is achieved, which will be helpful in designing item level RFID system. In our proposed system, an RFID tag is attached to each tape for securing an IV on arms of the patients. In addition, some reader antennas are set at the bottom of the mattress pad. If the patients remove their IV needles, the communications between the RFID tag and the reader are stopped because the IC chip is come off the RFID tag. Therefore, removing IV needles are detected by whether the RFID tag can communicate with the reader or not. For our proposed system, the tag antenna and the reader antenna are designed and the characteristics of the proposed antennas are calculated. In addition, the communication area between the proposed RFID tag and the reader are measured by use of an examinee.
