Collaboration applications and collaborating systems use vocabularies at different (lower) layers that are specific to the state in which they execute. Distributed, yet collaborative domain-specific applications have demonstrated success when lower layer vocabularies are well defined. These standard vocabularies enable platform neutral, programming language neutral and client neutral mechanisms to realize successful handshake between collaboration applications. The concept can be extended to an application neutral, protocol neutral, platform neutral, programming language neutral and client neutral vocabulary model that will facilitate harmonious handshake of collaboration channels. This paper addresses the need for standardizing vocabulary at the collaboration channel level and presents a model for realizing vocabulary-awareness in a generalized neutral format. A pilot study done to implement the model using a sample vocabulary is presented.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133864245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To handle virtual environments of such massive scale, decentralized systems are necessary that also involve the resources of clients. The expedient design of techniques enabling this kind of next-generation decentralized distributed virtual environments (DDVEs) is a growing field of research. In the HyperVerse project, we aim at the provision of an infrastructure enabling such DDVEs, focusing on collaboration and self-organization as means to achieve a maximum degree of scalability. In this paper we present a self-organized resource allocation scheme for DDVEs functioning independent of the underlying P2P network topology. Exploiting the heterogeneity of clients and utilizing locally available information only, it helps alleviate the load imposed by regions with a high user density as they often occur in such environments. Evaluations show that both for the discovery of these regions and their alleviation the local views converge fast to a global one, with favorable effects on the overlay topology.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124216645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Review ratings by authors have potential to improve the quality of peer reviews, by giving way to remuneration of good reviews. A significant problem, however, is that authors' perception is hardly neutral, but might be affected by the reviews. To gain insight into their perception of peer reviews, we have conducted a survey among the authors of papers submitted to a peer-reviewed computer science conference. One of our findings is that authors are satisfied with reviews whose comments they deem helpful, and when they feel that the reviewer has made an effort to understand the paper. Suprisingly, these results hold when controlled for the score given by the reviewer. Based on the study results, we discuss the suitability of author ratings to identify high-quality reviews. We describe a remuneration function for reviews based on author ratings that aims to neutralize the effects of review scores.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126161862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These items such as IPhones, IPad and Androïds are very attractive since they provide relatively good resources for a mobile device. Several works aim at integrating desktop applications in these tools to make them closer to the real computer. However, adapting desktop applications to these tools is a challenging problem as they do not have the same features. Real time collaborative editors are famous applications allowing for several users to edit the same shared document simultaneously. Such an application is more and more used not only in professional fields but also in a personal context. In this work, we extend decentralized collaborative editors to mobile devices by conceiving a successful garbage collection scheme that optimally manages mobile devices resources. We propose a novel design for distributed garbage collection that ensures a good behavior of the application through the good measurements obtained for different types of mobile phones.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124648545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examples of DVEs are Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs), distributed interactive simulations, and shared virtual worlds. The service providers of DVEs need to ensure that certain Quality of Service (QoS) (messages delivered within a threshold delay) is guaranteed for the users participating in the DVE. In addition to ensuring QoS, the service providers want to balance the load on the servers that maintain the DVE. In this paper, we propose a framework for DVEs which provides QoS to the users and balances the load among the servers. Our framework uses the concept of a virtual server which is a piece of software that does the processing for the DVEs. Each region in the DVE is maintained by an overlay of virtual servers. We provide a heuristic that maps the virtual servers to physical servers, balances the load among the servers and ensures that the servers are not overloaded with objects. We also present a heuristic for creating a Degree and Diameter Bounded Multicast Tree of virtual servers for each region in the DVE which guarantees QoS for users in the DVE. We have conducted simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of our proposed framework.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128277502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since television has a proven impact on consumer purchase behaviors, there is commercial interest in technologies that model viewers' intent, interests and engagement. However, the ecosystem currently faces two challenges - audience fragmentation and a lack of integrated search features. Both have an impact on content providers' ability to track and profile their consumers and are thus critical to personalizing and monetizing content-related services. In this paper, we introduce CollecTV, a social search solution for TV and video queries that can mitigate these concerns by incentivizing the consumer to adopt consistent identities across three screens while also providing finer-grained attention and engagement analytics to content providers. We give an overview of the architecture and describe the evolution of the system from a TV-centric solution to a 3-screen model with native mobile and browser clients to maximize its usage and utility. We conclude by reviewing relevant research and outlining challenges and opportunities for further exploration in this space.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131011575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence, wide ranging knowledge and learning content are needed. Problems then emerge in the provision of suitable authoring tools to carry out the authoring process which is complex and time consuming. Based on the fact that former research studies on authoring have identified drawbacks in collaboration, usabilility, efficiency, or interoperability, this paper proposes an approach for collaborative adaptation authoring for adaptive learning. The intended approach aims at improving authoring for AEH systems by allowing many people to participate and enhancing authors' interaction. The novelty of the approach lies in how the domain knowledge which has been semantically defined is enriched, and in the application of Computer Support Collaborative Work (CSCW). This approach adopts the advantages of existing semantic web technology and wiki-based authoring tools used to develop domain knowledge; its output is then enriched with pedagogy-related knowledge including adaptation. The output of the system is intended to be delivered in an existing AEH system.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127970580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose SocialDNS, a decentralized, naming service that gives individual collaborators the power to choose the domain names for their resources. Our approach is based on similar concepts of decentralized naming solutions available in local area networks. We enable short-names for resources by limiting the scope for uniqueness. We also employ a rank-based mechanism for dealing with name conflicts. We evaluate our design through graph level analysis to anticipate scope, bandwidth costs and latency. We also conducted experiments involving Amazon EC2 and PlanetLab to analyze the latencies in a real world environment.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129441086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Communications-based approaches to reducing highway accidents include vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. However, while V2V and V2I are promising approaches for reducing accidents, they require installation of new sensors in vehicles and the information they can produce is limited. In this paper, we present the navigation-to-navigation (Nav2Nav) approach for reducing accidents on roads which is different from V2V and V2I from several perspectives including: (a) the widespread availability and use of navigation systems with no installation requirement, (b) the familiarity and acceptance of navigation systems by many people around the word, (c) the availability of map databases in navigation systems which facilitates map matching (the process of finding the correct segment of road as opposed to raw positioning data) and prediction in navigation, and (d) the availability of routes requested by drivers.","PeriodicalId":354101,"journal":{"name":"6th International Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and Worksharing (CollaborateCom 2010)","volume":"2008 29","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134475409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
