These include interviews with hundreds of noteworthy historical figures and cover a wide range of local and national issues from racial equality to women’s rights. As part of its efforts to develop a digital platform that fosters deeper user engagement with these recordings, STRA has been using experimental speech-to-text software to create transcripts of the audio, which the archive uses not only for the enhancement of search functions, but also to support an interactive remix tool that allows users to edit, combine, and share radio interviews.","PeriodicalId":35382,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Archival Organization","volume":"17 1","pages":"112 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332748.2020.1765634","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49469355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These discs have proven highly unstable and are considered a top preservation priority in radio archives. While preservation reformatting via mechanical playback is ideal, when it comes to damaged or deteriorating discs, the risk of losing content and the amount of labor needed to perform one-to-one transfers is high. As an alternative, several optical scanning technologies have been developed. This article offers a comparative study of four existing optical transfer systems for discs: IRENE, Saphir, VisualAudio, and Endpoint Audio.","PeriodicalId":35382,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Archival Organization","volume":"17 1","pages":"125 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332748.2020.1788313","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45338992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Preserve This Podcast (PTP) was an Andrew W. Mellon-funded outreach and education project designed to raise awareness among indie podcasters of the need to proactively preserve their content and teach basic techniques for podcast preservation. This paper discusses the preservation challenges faced by indie broadcasters and strategies the PTP team used to address these through face-to-face workshops, online outreach, and web-based tools, using the present threat of “podfade” to raise larger issues surrounding the urgency and challenges of preserving born-digital audio content.","PeriodicalId":35382,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Archival Organization","volume":"17 1","pages":"161 - 177"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15332748.2020.1769997","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43807728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
