Power line communication (PLC) was first employed in power utilities and since the 80s in home automation, too. However, its use in the automotive field received relatively little attention. This paper revisits the related work in using PLC technology for communication within the automotive domain and outlines its possible benefits. Then, it focuses on the issues that need to be addressed when introducing the PLC in the automotive domain. The final goal of this work is to carry out a practical assessment of the PLC technology in the referred domain that may open the way for future use in industrial scale.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130993330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data exchange across domain borders is - if at all - realized by interconnecting these networks at the management level. Thus, the next step is to realize end-to-end data exchange already at the device level. The resulting vertically integrated systems can host domain-spanning applications and make way for secured end-to-end communication among any group of devices. This is considered especially important if security-relevant information shall be exchanged. This paper presents an adaptive security layer protocol architecture that is capable of operating on heterogenous networks. The modular framework is designed to support virtually any combination of network protocols and applications that meet the requirements best. Through a plugin-based approach, easy extension and reuse of existing protocol mechanisms is achieved.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"40 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113958812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on wireless communication technologies, such infrastructures may be used to gain new flexibility within any step of a manufacturing process hence enabling the development of revolutionary new applications. The international FlexWARE (flexible wireless automation in real-time environments) initiative establishes such a new infrastructure in order to fill this technological gap in the market. But their performances are greatly influenced by time-varying packet delays and losses due to the communication system. As a consequence, real time operating systems are usually employed at NCS nodes to timely serve events scheduled by control applications. So far NCS issues have been mainly investigated assuming a wired network infrastructure. Anyway the trend is toward wireless communications. For these reasons, this paper proposes a real-time communication architecture based on the leading wireless 802.11 technology and on the real-time networking framework RTnet. The QoS offered by the proposed system, in terms of packet loss ratio and end-to-end delay, has been experimentally evaluated by varying protocol parameters. Results show that a proper tuning of system parameters can ensure robust real-time wireless communications. Thus, the present work can be considered an important step toward the design of a wireless networked control system.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123362858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The connection of networks is motivated by both cost-efficiency trade-offs in various network types and reasons of isolating highly critical from less critical communication. The intrinsic latencies incurred when crossing network boundaries are evaluated under various conditions - either in some form of synchronisation with a global time or in completely unsynchronised networks. The results from the formal analysis are compared to experimental results obtained in a mobile robot where the critical reactive control components are connected by a TTP/C network while additional sensor information improving the quality of control is obtained via a CAN-bus.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114130329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these contexts, network coexistence may be an issue, due to cross-channel interference. This paper addresses cross-channel interference in IEEE 802.15.4 networks. First, reasoning about the coding used by IEEE 802.15.4, we approximately assess the level of interference generated by ongoing transmissions on adjacent channels and thus the level of noise due to cross-channel interference. Secondly, we present and discuss experimental results obtained through an extensive series of measurements, which were run in order to assess the performance of IEEE 802.15.4 networks under different critical operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116154106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, state-of-the-art event management systems only cover selected levels of the automation pyramid, thus limiting the possibilities for holistic event-driven manufacturing monitoring and control. We propose a unified management of events across all levels of the automation pyramid. Thereby we utilize primitive and complex/composite events, i.e. logical or temporal combinations of primitive events to enable realtime shop floor control. We provide a comprehensive description of the overall architecture and the components necessary for a unified event management system based on the Publish/Subscribe paradigm. We detail the opportunities and challenges in applying the concept of complex event processing to the domain of manufacturing.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125320864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach of mapping packet deadline to a velocity is adopted as SPEED; however, our routing decision is made based on the novel 2-hop velocity. Energy-efficient probabilistic drop is embedded to enhance energy utilization efficiency while reducing packet deadline miss ratio. In case packet deadline requirement is not stringent, a new mechanism is included to release nodes which are frequently chosen as forwarders. Improvement on energy consumption balance throughout the network is observed. The true characteristics of physical and MAC layers are captured in the simulation. A real lossy link model is drawn from extensive experiments through Mica2 Motes. Simulation results show that the new protocol has achieved lower packet deadline miss ratio and higher energy efficiency.","PeriodicalId":352963,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems","volume":"57 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130617486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
