The large dimension of JSSP and the dynamic manufacturing environment have always been a difficult problem to optimize due to its size and complexity. In this study, three objective functions are selected namely, minimizing makespan, minimizing total cost and maximizing machine utilization. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to solve this scheduling problem. Lot size optimization technique is investigated for the potential of optimizing the makespan, total cost, and machine utilization objectives. Global Criterion (GC) Technique is implemented which can optimize multiple objectives all at once and obtain the best schedule. Finally, a case study is presented.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116735582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have explored how these methods affect the idea generation process, revealing that some methods can induce design fixation and reduce creativity. Moreover, studies reveal that depending on the communication methods and a receiver’s familiarity with the idea conveyed, the amount of relevant information transmitted could vary. Hence, based on previous studies, it is hypothesized that different communication methods and a receiver’s familiarity can impact a receiver’s ability to construct and interpret the information conveyed. To test this hypothesis, an experiment is conducted in which multiple methods are used to communicate different product ideas to individuals (N = 370). Participants are asked to describe the products in their own words and provide details about their functions. A text-mining approach is used to analyze the semantic structure of their responses. The results reveal that dissemination methods affect the consistency of participants’ responses, as well as the diversity of words used to describe a product idea or its functions. This knowledge can help designers in the selection of an appropriate method, given the design intention and help them leverage different methods to maximize communication effectiveness during the different stages of the design process.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128504707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An example is the spacecraft environment, where astronauts are subject to particular conditions, due to the extreme environment. The isolated and confined environment influences behaviors and perceptions. This situation can impact both on astronauts’ moods, cause states of depression, and impact on their performance in working activities. A spacecraft can be the Space Station orbiting the Earth, or future means of transportation used for travelling to other planets. In both cases the space should be designed so as to offer the best possible living and working conditions to the astronauts.\u0000 The research presented in this paper aims at designing and developing a multisensory VR system for the entertainment and the relaxation of astronauts. The use of VR technology allows us to overcome physical and psychological boundaries of the confined space, which is typical in a spacecraft environment. In this study, a new method is proposed to account for the uncertainty associated with the elastic modulus of materials used in aerospace components. A computerized tomography (CT) scanner is used to capture the porosity of the material and the corresponding uncertainty is represented with epistemic uncertainty. A stochastic upscaling method is used to find a homogenized modulus that correctly reflects the effect of defects inside of the material. This homogenized elastic modulus is then applied to a constructed finite-element model of an aerospace component so that the stochastic behavior can be correctly quantified. Simulations of the selected example, i.e., turbine blade, include both aleatory and epistemic uncertainty; thus, a P-Box is introduced to represent the response of the simulations. The stochastic upscaling method is applied again to match the P-Box response of the coarse scale model to that of the fine scale model. The obtained results show that the proposed framework not only significantly reduces complexity of the given engineering problem, but also produces accurate results which include both aleatory and epistemic uncertainty.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132664049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many missions have failed over the years due to anomalies in either the launch vehicle or the spacecraft. Projects of such magnitude with undetected flaws due to ineffective process controls account for huge losses. Such failures continue to occur despite the studies on systems engineering process deficiencies and the state-of-the-art systems engineering practices in place. To further explore the reasons behind majority of the failures, we analyzed the failure data of space missions that happened over the last decade. Based on that information, we studied the launch-related failure events from a design decision-making perspective by employing failure event chain-based framework and identified some dominant cognitive biases that might have impacted the overall system performance leading to unintended catastrophes. The results of the study are presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134486491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, a product needs to be designed considering multiple scenes. To certify that the product performs properly in any scene, industries started to apply Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Whereas multi-domain system simulations are regarded as a prominent approach for the system design of a product, construction of model depends on knowledge and sense modelers. This paper proposes a modelling method to construct appropriate multi-domain system simulation models while reducing dependencies to senses of modelers. The proposed method comprises two parts. First, significant tradeoffs to be studied by the simulation are specified. Second, features of simulation models are deliberated for specified tradeoffs. To specify significant tradeoffs, product and scenes where the product is used are integrated into a model. Further, to deliberate features of simulation model, cognitive model of physical phenomena in a product is employed as well. The proposed method was applied to the development of continuously variable transmission to verify its validity.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134549453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

RIC (Rapid investment casting) takes advantage of the additive nature of 3D printing for pattern making which allows for more complex castings than traditional investment casting. RIC is a manufacturing process that combines the casting knowledge accumulated over five thousand years with relatively novel AM knowledge. The result is a process that can compete with newer metal AM methods with the added benefits of excellent surface finish, fatigue strength and the ability to create parts from almost any metal or metal alloy. This article will focus on research advancements in investment casting, AM and all the topics that are closely related to optimizing these two processes. Beyond that, aerospace, dentistry and biomedical engineering advancements using investment casting will be reviewed.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125106454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since heat sinks are an integral part of all the electronic equipment, therefore, great consideration is given towards meticulous selection of heat sink for improving its reliability and performance. Various methods are being studied to improve heat transfer rates of heat sink such as microchannel, liquid cooling, nano-fluids, fin topology optimization, anodization of pins, and changing heat sink materials. Recent studies have demonstrated that perforations in pins increase the heat transfer rate of pin fin heat sink, though, the results are inadequate to infer the best geometry. Further research is hence necessary to establish the best possible combination of geometry, size, and number of perforations. The present work aims to numerically identify a heat sink configuration with maximum heat transfer rate among several configuration possibilities under laminar flow condition using ANSYS Fluent 18.2. The simulation results demonstrate that lateral perforation in fins enable higher heat transfer rate than the unmodified heat sink geometry, due to higher Nusselt number and reduced pressure drop. The parametric study also reveals that heat sink with three elliptical perforations boost heat transfer rates (about 21% higher) when compared to heat sink with solid and other perforated geometries. Furthermore, perforations reduce weight and greater effectiveness, making it more desirable for its wide-scale applications.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124088998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although some previous works focus on automatically generating sketches from reference images, many of them output exactly the same objects as the reference images. There are also models that generate sketches from scratch, which can be divided into pixel-based and stroke-based methods. Pixel-based methods generate sketches as a whole, without any information of the strokes, while stroke-based methods generate sketches by outputting strokes in a sequential manner. Pixel-based methods are frequently used to generate realistic color images. Although the pixel-based methods are more popular, stroke-based methods have the advantages to scale to a larger dimension without losing high fidelity. An image generated from stroke-based methods has only strokes on the canvas, resulting in no random noise in the blank areas of the canvas. However, one challenge in the engineering design community is that most of the sketches are saved as pixel-based images. Furthermore, many non-pixel-based methods rely on stroke-based training data, making them ill-suited for generating design conceptual sketches. In order to overcome these limitations, the authors proposed an agent that can learn from pixel-based images and generate stroke-based images. An advantage of such an agent is the ability to utilize pixel-based training data that is abundant in design repositories, to train stroke-based methods that are typically constrained by the lack of access to stroke-based training data.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127456850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to address these needs, the present work introduces the initial progress of the design and prototyping of a 6 degrees of freedom (6-DoF) robotic system to be used as such a testing infrastructure. This system is designed to be capable of enforcing 6-DoF kinematic or force controlled boundary conditions on deformable material specimens, while at the same time measuring both the imposed kinematics and the corresponding reaction forces in a fully automated manner. Furthermore, as an extension to our previously prototyped systems, the system proposed here is designed to apply both quasi-static loading but also cyclic loading for enabling multiaxial fatigue studies. In addition to the architecture, the design and current status of its implementation for the most critical sub-systems is presented.","PeriodicalId":352702,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: 39th Computers and Information in Engineering Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116937360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
