Voscoboinik, Marta Mercedes Maffia","doi":"10.33679/rmi.v1i1.2645","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33679/rmi.v1i1.2645","url":null,"abstract":"This article analyzes the leadership construction of three African migrants, one of Congolese origin and two Senegalese, in the National Meetings of Migrant Leaders (ENLM, for its acronym in Spanish) in Argentina from 2014-2020. For this purpose, participant observations and interviews with varying degrees of depth have been used. The research results indicate that the three migrant leaders have had very heterogeneous roles within the meetings. Their leadership trajectories show unique ways of building legitimacy and visibility and are supported by a differential accumulation of social and political capital. The revision of the regulations and directives of the Common European Asylum System reform focuses on the extension of integration measures to these people. A logistic regression was employed to predict these migratory destinations. The contribution of this research is that it tests whether social networks tied to a destination are associated with the likelihood to migrate there. The findings support the Social Network Theory and offer an improved measure of social networks. It is shown that in migration gender matters since flow and interactions vary between men and women. This has led to a growth in cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity in the suburbs reflecting global migration patterns. In Vancouver, Canada, the growing “suburbanization” of immigrants is shaping social, cultural, economic, and political landscapes in these areas. Through interviews with 60 key informants, we explore the settlement of Mexican immigrants in Burnaby, Surrey, and Abbotsford, fast-growing Canadian communities, and popular destinations for Mexican immigrants. Through a mixed methodology of participant observation and interviews, this paper aims to understand the signification of the concept of suffering in the different phases of the process. In the analyzed case, it was found that to each phase corresponds different motives and types of suffering, and that others are maintained in the three stages. Although the concept of suffering is implicit in many recent academic contributions to the phenomenon of migration, an adequate theorization of the suffering of Venezuelan forcibly displaced has been lacking. The object of the study is to reveal the desires of the Venezuelan population that is in immigrant status between Cúcuta and Villa del Rosario in the Department of Norte de Santander, Colombia. The methodology used focused on qualitative research through the application of semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the information was carried out with grounded theory and the Atlas.Ti software. Among the findings, four categories emerged: yearning for security, documents and identity, social yearnings and yearning for mobility. These results contributed to constructing a profile for this group of immigrants. From an intercultural perspective, a statistical index of relational inclusion (INIR, for its acronym in Spanish) is proposed that addresses three dimensions: settling in Chile, coexisting with the receiving society, and the presence of support networks. The main results show three fundamental elements for the experiences of inclusion of migrants in Chilean society: projected time in the receiving country, having experienced discrimination, and having local support networks. It also highlights the prevalence of low INIR scores among migrants without residence permits and those born in Haiti. The purpose is to carry out an analysis of the confirmed coronavirus cases between March to July 2020 in Chile, and the incidence of these among the migrant population, considering social and health conditions and multidimensional poverty rates. The data analyzed not only reflects vulnerability to the pandemic but also shows the hidden realities of migration processes and new challenges to this population. The information has been collected through the Transparency Act and the Sub-Secretariat of Health. These spaces and culinary proposals are not a simple reproduction, but negotiated interpretations of culture itself during migration processes and are analyzed from a transnational approach. The methodology is based on interviews and participant observations carried out in four foreign restaurants located in Greater Valparaíso, Chile. The article contributes to the production of knowledge about migrants who have capital, exploring performances, symbols, and culinary practices that selectively show their national culture. It is concluded that these restaurants can be considered bridges between cultures by linking multiple scales with imaginaries, representations, and emotions.
