DR systems are cyber-physical systems (CPS) where the communication component is cyber, whereas the control components have physical effects. As DR systems experience wider adoption and manipulate much larger loads, achieving scalability has become an important concern. On the other hand, demand response events are often sporadic, and maintaining systems and infrastructure that could easily scale up or down is often desirable for utility companies in terms of operational cost, which makes us envision that DR systems would eventually move to the cloud. However, moving to cloud is not an elixir as it brings some concerns of its own. In this paper, we focus on Open ADR 2.0-based systems and discuss security properties and challenges that must be considered when migrating DR systems to the cloud.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115774550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In theory, a base station (BS) needs to collect M measurements from the network with N sensors, then applies CS to obtain precisely all N sensor readings. In clustered networks, a cluster-head (CH) collects data from non-CH sensors in its cluster, adds all received and its own data then send the combined measurement to the BS. We further analyze the clustered network with the measurement matrix created by clustering methods, and formulate the total power consumption. Finally, we suggest the optimal number of clusters for the networks consume the least power in practice.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"265 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116043017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since gas and water meters are not connected to power lines, they are generally battery powered. Wireless multihop communications protocols used by these systems must therefore use little power in order to prolong operational life, in contrast to wired meters with supplied power that have little necessity for power-saving. We propose a wireless multihop communications protocol that enables integration of gas and water meters by devising a communications method for smart electric metering systems.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121282420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This protocol is widely used and enabled by default for several industrial environments and time sensitive monitoring and control applications. However, few work exists regarding the performance of this protocol because it lacks of an underlying theoretical model for analysing its performance. In this paper, we propose a novel approach relying on process mining technique that aims to obtain a Markov chain model for networks running the Contiki MAC protocol. In particular, we present a comprehensive specification of the protocol and a Markov chain model obtained through the analysis and instrumentation of its reference implementation. We used the obtained Markov chain to analyze and estimate the end to end delay distribution for a multi-hops transmission with static routing. The approach can also be extended to a wide range of protocols.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124003307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smart devices, which form the backbone of the Internet of Things (IoT), enable alternative forms of user experience by means of automation, convenience, and efficiency. At the same time new security and safety issues arise, given the Internet-connectivity and the interaction possibility of smart devices with human's proximate living space. Hence, security is a fundamental requirement of the IoT design. In order to remain interoperable with the existing infrastructure, we postulate a security framework compatible to standard IP-based security solutions, yet optimized to meet the constraints of the IoT ecosystem. In this ongoing work, we first identify necessary components of an interoperable secure End-to-End communication while incorporating Public-key Cryptography (PKC). To this end, we tackle involved computational and communication overheads. The required components on the hardware side are the affordable hardware acceleration engines for cryptographic operations and on the software side header compression and long-lasting secure sessions. In future work, we focus on integration of these components into a framework and the evaluation of an early prototype of this framework.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122063715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show that properly designed MLMG networks maintain decentralized communication, whereas show the advantage of centralized structures. In particular, they require less number of transmissions required to reach consensus. This feature is critical for efficient distributed computing in large-scale sensor network applications. For typical classes of MLMG networks, we mathematically characterize the reduced number of transmissions compared to equivalent egalitarian decentralized structures of the same consensus dynamics. This explicit characterization based on simple graphical characteristics of MLMG structures permits an efficient design of large-scale network structures to meet desired performance requirements. In addition, we characterize the asymptotic and transient properties of consensus in MLMG networks of limited channel rates, using the probabilistic quantization schemes.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122102541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Basu","doi":"10.1109/DCOSS.2014.55","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DCOSS.2014.55","url":null,"abstract":"Numerous sensors are involved in sensing almost everything around us in a cyber-physical system. They generate heterogeneous data which are diverse in format and protocol. Prevailing standards formally define sensor data encodings and provide syntactic interoperability but failed to provide semantic capability required for searching, reasoning, querying on sensors and their observations. The paper extends IEEE SUMO and Onto Sensor to create an ontological structure that captures various sensor concepts and their relationships. It logically classifies sensor information into four major sensor knowledge representation (1) hierarchy (2) data (3) function and (4) data exchange. The proposed sensor ontology has been extended for energy meter as an energy sensor. The represented semantic can be captured through Protégé 4.3.0 and subsequently by OWLXML. Reasoning on the sensor data can be carried out using SWRL.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"8 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133041816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These properties include the creation and maintenance of neighborhoods or other topological entities (like trees or clusters), load balancing in terms of connectivity degrees and provision of link symmetry. We see topology control as a two-fold problem where topological properties can also be affected by local network throughput. We propose SCLD-A2TP, a protocol that operates in a two phase adaptive scheme. First transmission power is adaptively adjusted with low throughput settings and nodes achieve a sufficient degree of symmetric and coherent links. Secondly throughput is maximized insofar as the degree is maintained. We assess various distributed heuristics for SCLD-A2TP via test bed experiments and show that up to an extend, link quality and symmetry as well as degree conformity of links can be regulated successfully by transmission power and adaptive throughput control.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122355563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SBL effectively partitions the area into regions corresponding to unique ranked sequences. Prior work has developed SBL under the assumption that all beacons have the same transmit power. In this work, we consider beacons with unequal transmit power for sequence-based localization and present heuristic algorithms for joint transmit power optimization and beacon placement. We show through comprehensive simulations that a novel enhancement of SBL utilizing optimized non-uniform transmit powers, coupled with careful beacon placement, which we refer to as NU-SBL, can dramatically improve the area partitioning compared to traditional SBL. However, in evaluating these schemes under stochastic fading, we find that the original SBL with optimized location performs nearly as well or slightly better than NU-SBL in many cases. We introduce another scheme, that we refer to as NU-SBL-ZOOM, which further allows the power levels to be optimized non-uniformly so as to focus in on a particular smaller region within the larger localization space. NU-SBL-ZOOM is found to perform much better in terms of both area partitioning as well as location error in the presence of fading.","PeriodicalId":351707,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127395435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
