The class hierarchy of such a generic API does not reflect the schema of any particular data source, and thus it is hard to clarify what data an API client accesses and how it obtains them. This makes it difficult to maintain the API clients. In this paper, we show that the data access of an API client can be recovered through static analysis on the client's source code. We provide a formal and intuitive way to represent the data access, as a graph of so-called summoning snippets. Each snippet stands for a type of data accessed by the client, and carries the code slice from the client about how to obtain the data via the API. We provide an automated approach to inferring a complete and well-simplified set of summoning snippets from the client source code, based on points-to analysis and code slicing. We implement this approach as a development assistant tool, and evaluate it on eight open source data processing programs, with average precision and recall of 89% and 95%, respectively. Further inspection of these clients, as well as a user study about writing data accessing code on their data sources, show that the inference results are useful in the inspection of existing clients and the development of new data access logics.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121533264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the extent of research in this field is still relatively limited, particularly when compared to research on static metrics, the field is growing, given the inherent advantages of dynamic metrics. The aim of this work is to systematically investigate the body of research on dynamic software metrics to identify issues associated with their selection, design and implementation. Mapping studies are being increasingly used in software engineering to characterize an emerging body of research and to identify gaps in the field under investigation. In this study we identified and evaluated 60 works based on a set of defined selection criteria. These studies were further classified and analyzed to identify their relativity to future dynamic metrics research. The classification was based on three different facets: research focus, research type and contribution type. We found a strong body of research related to dynamic coupling and cohesion metrics, with most works also addressing the abstract notion of software complexity. Specific opportunities for future work relate to a much broader range of quality dimensions.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132530267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides high level knowledge to software stakeholders, helps them to make important decisions. Unfortunately, retrieving software maintenance history is a heavy manual work so it can be invalid or even misleading. This paper use topic models to organize software maintenance documents such as bug reports into topics. Event detection tool is adopted to identify maintenance events from these topics. Finally, the identified events reconstruct software maintenance history. Retrieval results on 100,000 Eclipse bug reports are in accordance with Eclipse history records.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117302558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The detection and analysis of changes applied between two versions of a model are one of the most important tasks during evolution and maintenance activities. In this paper, we propose an approach to detect high-level model changes in terms of refactorings. Our approach takes as input an exhaustive list of possible refactorings, the initial model and revised model, and generates as output a list of detected changes representing a sequence of refactorings. A solution is defined as a combination of refactorings that should maximize as much as possible the similarity between the expected revised model and the generated model after applying the refactoring sequence on the initial model. Due to the huge number of possible refactoring combinations, a heuristic method is used to explore the space of possible solutions. To this end, we used and adapted genetic algorithm as global heuristic search. The validation results on various versions of real-world models taken from an open source project confirm the effectiveness of our approach.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128688519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This makes them prone to accumulating dead code. In turn, dead code is commonly understood to inhibit software evolution. The only way out of this vicious circle is the careful analysis of the web system, identifying unused features, and eliminating them. However, modern web systems are often built with server side scripting languages such as PHP. Their inherent dynamic features render traditional static dead code identification approaches useless. We describe the technical issues involved in detecting dead PHP code, and propose an identification and removal approach based on dynamic analysis. Further, we describe the examination of our approach in an industry-scale web system, and discuss our lessons learned.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126534051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, the existence of code smells seems an ideal indicator for maintainability assessments. However, to achieve comprehensive and accurate evaluations based on code smells, we need to know how well they reflect factors affecting maintainability. After identifying which maintainability factors are reflected by code smells and which not, we can use complementary means to assess the factors that are not addressed by smells. This paper reports on an empirical study that investigates the extent to which code smells reflect factors affecting maintainability that have been identified as important by programmers. We consider two sources for our analysis: (1) expert-based maintainability assessments of four Java systems before they entered a maintenance project, and (2) observations and interviews with professional developers who maintained these systems during 14 working days and implemented a number of change requests.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125817814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, how developers use code completion tools on integrated development environments is still not elucidated completely. Aiming to improve such tools, we performed an investigation in terms of code completion use. We investigated developers' operation histories on an integrated development environment and found that code completion operations inserting the same text tend to be repetitively performed in a short time period. We also propose new code completion strategies to reduce such repetitive code completion.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134132068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

McMillan et al. have proposed a solution to detect similar applications based on common Java API usage patterns. Recently, collaborative tagging has impacted software development practices. Various sites allow users to give various tags to software systems. In this study, we would like to complement the study by McMillan et al. by leveraging another source of information aside from API usage patterns, namely software tags. We have performed a user study involving several participants and the results show that collaborative tagging is a promising source of information useful for detecting similar software applications.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134511864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unintended inconsistencies occur unless we recognize all the code fragments that need to modify in a given bug fix or functional addition. Before modifying source code, keyword-based search tools like grep or code clone detection tools can be used to prevent code fragments from being overlooked. However, once inconsistencies occur in the source code, such tools cannot help us adequately. In this paper, we propose a new method to identify unintended inconsistencies in source code automatically. The proposed method analyzes source code modifications in a repository to derive modification patterns. A modification pattern indicates what kind of code and how it was modified. The derived modification patterns are queries to identify unintended inconsistencies from the latest version of source files. We implemented the proposed method and applied it to FreeBSD and Apache HTTPD. As a result, we identified many overlooked code fragments for bug fixes, functional enhancements, and refactorings. The precisions were 73.4% and 88.9% for the two systems, respectively.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"33 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131964126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
