The proposed HiTNet architecture simultaneously encodes as well as decodes information hierarchically at different levels of linguistic granularity such as bytes and BPE. In general this idea can be extended to any levels of granularity including phonemes or graphemes or bytes (character to sub-character in some languages), to sub-words or byte-pair encodings (BPE), to words, and so on. Existing hierarchical e2e ASR models primarily encode the acoustic information in an hierarchical manner governed by weaker linguistic constraints at each level. The language information at each level is neither embedded or used explicitly, nor is the information decoded at each level passed on to the next stage. The proposed architecture primarily decodes information in an hierarchical manner utilizing the linguistic information at each level explicitly, while at the same time utilizing the hierarchically encoded acoustic information at each level. Experiments with a two-level byte-to-BPE (b2B) hierarchical transcription show that the proposed architecture significantly reduces the word error rates of both the byte and BPE decoders compared to baseline byte and BPE based attention encoder-decoder models.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131853366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The core idea is to improve or customize marketing and customer service strategies, de-pending on the geographic location, birthplace and culture. This study proposes different models to automatically dis-criminate between two Colombian dialects: “Antioqueño” and “Bogotano”, to the best of our knowledge this is the first work of Colombian dialect recognition based on real conver-sations from customer service centers. The proposed strategy consists of independent analyses, using information from speech recordings and their corresponding transliterations. On the one hand, classical approaches are used to model speech including prosody features, Mel frequency cepstral coefficients and the mean Hilbert envelope coefficients. For text models, Word2Vec and bidirectional encoding represen-tations from transformer embeddings are considered. On the other hand, a deep learning approach is applied by considering convolutional neural networks, which are trained using spectrograms and embedding matrices for speech and text, respectively. The implemented deep learning models seem to be more promising than the classical ones for the addressed problem. Further experiments will be considered to validate this claim in a wider spectrum of methods.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114246327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accent variability is a challenging source of variability, and the variations within one accent often do not generalize to others. Consequently, end-to-end models that have only transcriptions as linguistic information need high amounts of data to learn how different accents realize their sounds. To aid with recognition of accented speech, we make use of an accent independent abstraction of phonemes, often called metaphonemes. We force our models to learn hidden representations that are correlated to metaphonemes using multi-task training. Our aim is to obtain a model that is more robust to accented speech and, can, at the same time, adapt faster to different accents through the learned structure. Our experiments on the Common Voice corpus show better generalization when making use of this additional linguistic information, with a word error rate reduction of up to 12.6% when compared to the baseline. Furthermore, the relative improvement when adapting an existing model by making use of the metaphonemes is higher than using Byte Pair Encodings alone.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115088654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So far, to the best of our knowledge, E2E models have only been trained to recognize the semantics for a single language. In this work we introduce the first multilingual E2E SLU system and present results across three languages - English, Spanish and French. We propose a transformer-based, multilingual acoustic encoder to predict intents, that leverages pre-training for both acoustic and linguistic modalities of the SLU model. It learns a robust, cross-modal latent space using a pre-trained multilingual BERT as a semantic teacher. The best performing model achieves relative improvements of 7.2% in a single language setting, 5-6% in two, and 4-6% in three language settings. An intent-wise analysis shows that semantic supervision becomes more important for shorter utterances, while providing an explicit language identifier at the input leads to lower intent classification errors.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128661474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It involves the use of various archi-tectures such as recently proposed Conformer, multi-task learning with different auxiliary criteria and multiple decoding strategies, in-cluding our own proposition. Through experiments and benchmarks, we show that our proposed systems can be competitive against other state-of-art systems on well-known datasets such as LibriSpeech and AISHELL-1. Additionally, we demonstrate that these models are promising against other already implemented systems in ESPnet in regards to both performance and decoding speed, enabling the pos-sibility to have powerful systems for a streaming task. With these additions, we hope to expand the usefulness of the ESPnet toolkit for the research community and also give tools for the ASR industry to deploy our systems in realistic and production environments.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116207928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Normally building these systems relies heavily on labor-intensive human-labeled data. In this paper, we adopt the pseudo-labeling (PL) method to make better use of the massive amount of unlabeled data. Traditional pseudo-labeling mechanism selects predictions of high confidence from the unlabeled pool to augment the labeled data, which may be over-confident and less informative. To select more informative, less noisy data, we optimize the pseudo-labeling process by modeling both data and knowledge uncertainty. Based on a self-adaptive learning mechanism, we sequentially and iteratively select unlabeled samples to augment the training sets during the multi-step self-training procedure until the stop criterion is satisfied. Experimental results based on data from the spoken English tests demonstrate superior performance compared to the baselines and other semi-supervised learning (SSL) methods in Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) and accuracy.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127322731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use an X-Vector system trained on augmented VoxCeleb1 and VoxCeleb2 data to obtain embeddings for pathological speech after total or partial larynx removal. We show that our model is able to effectively distinguish and visualize patient groups when generating embeddings. We further compare various regression models on the task of automatically predicting different perceptual ratings by speech therapists (intelligibility, vocal effort, and overall quality) based on the extracted speaker embeddings. For both patient groups we show Pearson correlations in the range of +0.8; we find that Random Forest and Support Vector Regression produce scores that best resemble the experts' assessments.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"82 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120898241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, the proposed system employs a multi-level global-local statistics pooling method in order to aggregate the speaker information within short time-span and utterance-level context. In order to evaluate the proposed system, a set of experiments on the NIST SRE 2016, Short-duration speaker verification (SdSV) Challenge 2021, and VoxCeleb datasets were conducted, and the proposed hybrid network was able to outperform the conventional approaches trained on the same dataset. Moreover, our experiments showed that the proposed system is able to achieve stable performance even when using a relatively smaller dataset, which highlights the efficiency of the proposed system in extracting the speaker-dependent information.","PeriodicalId":348315,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding Workshop (ASRU)","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133342702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
