Application domains are those of any noninvasive biometric, but with particular advantage in surveillance scenarios. Its recognition capability is supported by studies in other domains such as medicine (biomechanics), mathematics and psychology which also suggest that gait is unique. Further, examples of recognition by gait can be found in literature, with early reference by Shakespeare concerning recognition by the way people walk. Many of the current approaches confirm the early results that suggested gait could be used for identification, and now on much larger databases. This has been especially influenced by DARPA's Human ID at a Distance research program with its wide scenario of data and approaches. Gait has benefited from the developments in other biometrics and has led to new insight particularly in view of covariates. Equally, gait-recognition approaches concern extraction and description of moving articulated shapes and this has wider implications than just in biometrics.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131749797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several recent works propose using Lagrangian optimization to find the optimal quantization step for each coded macro-block, to meet a desired rate at minimum distortion. In this paper we propose to extend the Lagrangian optimization procedure by allowing the modification of quantized coefficients values, including setting their values to zero, in addition to quantization step-size selection. Coefficient value modification and quantization step-size selection are optimally done using a low complexity trellis-based procedure. The proposed requantization algorithm provides higher PSNR values than the Lagrangian-based optimization method that only handles the selection of quantization steps, and still does not exceed considerably its complexity.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125541111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, a Software Radio device is considered aiming at the identification of the presence of two co-existent communication modes as Bluetooth, based on Frequency Hopping - Code Division Multiple Access (FH-CDMA), and IEEE WLAN 802.11b, based on Direct Sequence - Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA). A pattern recognition approach will be presented, where TF analysis is employed for feature extraction, and a multi hypotheses k nearest neighbors (k-NN) non parametric classifier is used. Results in terms of error classification probability, expressed as relative error frequency, will be provided.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116131114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently the HAF suffers from noise-masking effects and from the appearance of undesired cross terms in the presence of multi-components PPS. The multi-lag product HAF (PHAF) concept was then proposed as a way to improve the performances of the HAF. Nevertheless, the “optimal” choice of lag sets implies many tries, undesirable in an automatically signal processing context. On the other hand, multiplying many mlHAFs might lead to abnormal results. In this paper we propose a warped-based algorithm in order to accurately estimate the coefficients of the polynomial phase. We compute the HAF for different lag values. Knowing the variation law of the frequency with respect to these values, we can construct a warping function leading to a linear dependence between the HAF maxima coordinates and the lag set.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116654488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the asymmetrical RVLC requires separate two code tables, it shows better coding efficiency due to more flexible codeword assignment. Still, existing design methods for asymmetrical RVLCs are inefficient. In this paper, we propose a new design algorithm for the asymmetrical RVLC using the property of the Huffman code and the average length function. In addition, comparing the robustness of RVLCs shows that proposed efficient asymmetrical RVLC does not lose error-correcting property significantly.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125277169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By studying the fatigue process during exercise, a highly non-stationary noise is expected as well as time-varying QRS complex morphology. In difficult recording conditions, the QRS complex detectors have to be extremely robust but also have to meet high performance requirements. To achieve this aim, a “smoothed” matched filtering is realized on specific wavelet coefficient patterns in the time-scale plane. The detection is enhanced using the family of Klauder wavelets which demonstrate similarities to ECG waveforms. The algorithm only needs to capture a correct QRS complex snapshot before launching the detection.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115366223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the approaches are different, they are capable of delivering acoustic immersion to a large number of listeners simultaneously without restricting their activities by headphones, trackers, or alike. In particular, the sweet spot limitation well known from current consumer market systems is repealed. However, these attractive properties could only be realized in listening rooms without any noticeable reverberation. Otherwise, measures have to be taken for the digital compensation of wall reflections. This contribution presents an adaptive compensation technique which is based on the decomposition of sound fields into plane waves. Various advantages are discussed, e.g. improved multichannel adaptation by decoupling of the compensation filters. Finally, results for a specific spatial reproduction method (wave field synthesis) are presented.","PeriodicalId":347658,"journal":{"name":"2004 12th European Signal Processing Conference","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115679073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
