In the study of Big Data, a recurring theme comes through. There is a great deal of data available and there is a need to understand this data. Machine analytics can help organizations understand these numbers, and computers are learning from these large datasets. Because of this machine learning, computer technology will have the ability to “think”, i.e. artificial intelligence. An assumption frequently made is that this technology will take over many current jobs. Recently, there has been an immense amount of discussion on this topic in the media. But is it true? This paper will list some management challenges in this possible job transition.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124096610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In so doing, we illustrate how such an approach could contribute to building supply network robustness and resilience. The proposed model entails two key objectives; minimizing lead time and cost across the supply network. The solution approach first employs a bidding mechanism to select a set of supply network entities that match with a given demand profile from a candidate pool of entities. It then applies the popular technique known as N on-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II to generate a set of Pareto-optimal solutions representing alternative supply network configurations. The proposed model is tested on a case study of a refrigerator supply network to draw delivery time and cost comparisons under static and dynamic demand profiles.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"173 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120924591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through case studies and surveys, obstacles and challenges facing cosmetic companies that either start as a sustainable cosmetic company or decides to include sustainable cosmetics in its product portfolio are discussed. Suggestions for those companies to not only survive but also thrive in an already saturated cosmetic product industry are provided. They include strategies that help cosmetic companies to better integrate sustainability into the core of their business strategies and managerial operations. Based on insights gained from the literature review and case studies, three main successful factors-customer education, company image building, and establishing strategic alliance are identified and illustrated in details.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121118745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That is especially relevant for poverty entrepreneurs, who struggle to integrate technology and therefore limit the survivability and growth of their ventures. However, current research on this issue is still scarce. Therefore, our paper attempts to address this gap by discussing how technology affects poverty entrepreneurs' opportunity horizon and decision-making processes. We are also taking a closer look at technology literacy and the digital divide and what how they affect poverty entrepreneurs' ventures.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114285441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper reports a study of engineering managers and employees working in Saudi Arabia and of both Saudi and non-Saudi nationality. Two survey instruments, Modified McAllister's cognitive and affective trust scale and Organisational Trust Inventory (OTI), are used to assess the level of trust in the immediate supervisor, CEO and organisation in engineering managers and employees. Two subgroups, high collectivist and high individualist respondents are then analysed. Parametric statistics are applied with a T-test analysis used to assesses whether the means of the two groups are statistically different from each other. The paper finds that there is a significant difference between high collectivist and high individualist engineering managers and employees for all three of the referents, trust in supervisor, trust in CEO and trust in organization. In each case engineers from a high collectivist culture report a higher trust perception.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114201215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key tenets of sustainable development is the introduction of clean energy, and specifically renewable energy technologies (RETs). The acceleration of the adoption of RETs, however, requires an increase in the rate of commercialization of such technologies; classified as multi-technology renewable energy systems (MTRESs) due to the hierarchical nature of such systems, with differing commercialization-based needs. A strategic management framework was designed as a tool to support the development of strategies for increasing the commercialization rate of MTRESs, and applied to the case of concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies in South Africa. The framework serves as a proof-of-concept, given the current industry constraints, due to political uncertainties in the energy sector of the country, and the theoretical validation process followed. While commercialization prospects for CSP technologies in South Africa could be improved through positioning the country within the global production network of CSP technologies, it is difficult to commercialize a technology for a foreign market. In addition, the paper encourages dialogue on how different stakeholders may be mobilized in the interests of a given technology, while continuing a recent trend in literature, which seeks to move the conversation from energy analysis to practical measures, aimed at hastening efforts towards a sustainable energy transition.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"1 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131775326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several areas need to be considered during M&A transactions and if these areas are not fully understood, the expected value of the transaction may not be realized. This paper highlights how different areas to watch during a transaction are important to the overall success of the event. These areas include culture, institutional knowledge, experience of the management team, leadership, human resources, overall process, and existing systems which can each impact the success of the transaction. The combining of different organizations can be difficult based on their culture which guides how they interact with employees, customers, vendors, stakeholders, and others. Ambiguities need to be addressed as quickly as they can so that a solid transition plan can be developed, communicated, and implemented. Finally, the systems deployed to help manage the new organization can also impact the success of the transaction. The necessary steps across all of the discussed areas need to be understood and properly executed to obtain the desired value of the transaction.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114500937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These theories, models and tools are organized around three PD domains: people, product, processes, and the information that flows between them. The paper does not attempt to identify all publications in any one domain but instead focuses on obtaining a representative collection of papers that define, explain, and describe the various theories, and tools in each domain and more importantly at the intersection of the three domains.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"3 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120857042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we assume that firms are capable of developing dynamic functionality through their own initiative; this means that they are able to change and adapt, becoming agile to their surrounding environment. We propose that an approach from complexity theory may explain the phenomena that arises in an organization as it faces turbulent environments for competence. We introduce the importance of complexity approaches to knowledge management. The key questions addressed in this paper are: (1) How is KM managed through complexity theory, ensuring competitiveness is increased? and (2) How does the approach to complexity theory increase the understanding of competitiveness? This research analyses KM tools to implement management systems, based on knowledge and complexity theory. Although competitiveness is perceived as vital for organizations, the approximation of knowledge and complex theory are not yet fully developed and integrated into organizational processes to increase it.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130600079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
