Materials and Methods: Twelve persons who received bilateral implants participated. After healing, implants were randomly uncovered using either a scalpel (control) or a 940 nm diode laser (experimental). The participants′ pain perception was assessed by questionnaires and visual analog scale. Crevicular fluid was collected around the implants at day 1 and 7, and IL-1 β and IL-6 levels were measured by ELISA. Bacterial samples were collected around the healing abutments at day 1 and 7. Results: A statistically significant difference in change of pain score over time was found. The laser sites showed an increase in pain that continued until day 3, while the scalpel sites showed an increase in pain that declined by day 2. A global health questionnaire showed that patients overwhelmingly preferred the laser to the scalpel. IL-1 β levels were significantly lower in the laser group as compared to the control group at day 1 (387.2 pg/mL vs. 456.2 pg/mL, P = 0.02). No statistically significant differences in IL-6 or bacterial quantities were found between test and control sites. Conclusions: Even though a slightly greater amount of pain was perceived over the first 2 postoperative days, patients significantly preferred the laser to the scalpel. Less inflammatory cytokine production of IL-1 β was found after the 1 st day of healing after laser surgery. Bacterial sampling was similar between test and control groups.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122418604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: After root canal instrumentation and filling, apices of 60 single-rooted teeth were resected. Retrograde Class I cavities 3 mm deep were prepared using ultrasonic retro-prep tips (Group A), round burs (Group B), and Er:YSGG laser (Group C). An ultrasonic unit was used with computed tomography-5 retrotip at the frequency of 32 KHz. Laser beam parameters were a pulse of very short duration (100 s), energy of 280 mJ, and repetition rate of 10 Hz. The apical root portion and root-end cavities were replicated and prepared for stereomicroscopic analysis. Results: The degree of chipping associated with the margin of the root-end cavities and the incidence of root face cracks were noted. Marginal chipping of root-end cavities prepared using ultrasonic instrumentation was significantly higher than that produced by bur (P < 0.001) or laser, with laser group showing the least amount of chipping. Conclusion: There was a significant difference between the number of cracks produced by the three methods, with the laser group having the least number of cracks and marginal chipping.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"130 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124248499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lasers are widely used for a numerous procedures such as de-epithelization, pocket disinfection, frenectomy, scaling and root planing, and surgical procedures such as excision of soft-tissue growths. Improved healing, hemostasis, and sutureless excisions are some of the many advantages of laser over conventional treatment modalities. It is because of these advantages that laser is becoming more and more popular as a treatment option in various aspects of dentistry. We hereby present a case report, where we have used soft-tissue diode laser for surgical management of a fibroepithelial hyperplasia with reactive bone formation, because of its many advantages over conventional methods. Fibroepithelial hyperplasia is most commonly seen at the site of trauma in mouth or in other areas of the body. This polyp is usually not harmful and does not grow in size. However, at times, these tags may need to be surgically excised for esthetic and functional purposes or for the fear of malignancy.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115880080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lasers can be used for initial periodontal therapy and surgical procedures. When used in deep periodontal pockets with associated bony defects, the laser not only removes the diseased granulation tissue and associated bacteria but also it promotes osteoclast and osteoblast activity, often resulting in bone regrowth. Laser is effectively used to perform gingivectomies, gingivoplasties, free gingival graft procedures, crown lengthening, operculectomy, pocket disinfection, and many more. Gingival depigmentation using laser ablation has been recognized as an effective, pleasant, and reliable technique. In terms of esthetic dentistry, the use of the Erbium laser in crown lengthening in the anterior has created an entirely new dimension in smile design.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128710475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: A total of 20 systemically healthy patients of 18 males and two females, within the age group of 18-40 years with an esthetic complaint of hyperpigmented gingiva were enrolled in this study. The patients were briefed about the surgical procedure and obtained the informed consent; they were randomly divided into two groups. Group A: 10 patients - depigmentation with scalpel technique. Group B: 10 patients - depigmentation with diode lasers (Biolase; ) and followed for 6 months. Results: The results of this study had shown that there is a statistically significant difference in the pre- and post-operative values in scalpel surgical technique with a (P = 0.005), and there is no statistically significant (P = 0.20) difference in the diode laser technique. Statistical Analysis Used: Wilcoxon Signed rank test and Mann-Whitney test. Conclusion: By using diode lasers, the rate of repigmentation is higher than scalpel method; however, it has been documented that there is minimal postoperative bleeding, pain, wound healing, discomfort, and ease of the procedure with diode laser and finally, each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127602969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: Thirty caries free premolars, extracted atraumatically for orthodontic treatment were included in the study. Using a diamond low-speed disc, enamel blocks containing the pits and fissure were cut from the tooth and divided into three groups containing 10 samples in each (G1 - diode, G2 - carbon dioxide [CO 2 ], and G3 - erbium). The enamel blocks were mounted using self-cure acrylic resin and irradiated using the three LASER systems at lower energy densities. Post irradiation, the microhardness of enamel in the pit and fissure region was measured using Vickers microhardness test. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was done to check the microstructural changes of the lased enamel. Data obtained were subjected to Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and ANOVA with statistical significance set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: All three groups showed an increase in microhardness when compared to the value taken as control (control - 209.6, diode - 237.56 ± 19.27, CO 2 -294.92 ± 29.38, erbium - 264.39 ± 11.83). ANOVA test revealed a highly significant (P = 0.001) difference between the means of the three groups. Tukey post-hoc analysis showed that CO 2 LASER showed a higher increase in microhardness followed by erbium and diode LASER. Conclusion: This study revealed that the increase in microhardness and microstructural changes obtained with CO 2 LASER was higher than the other two LASER systems. Furthermore, diode LASER can be used as a viable option for fissurotomy procedure as it improves the hardness of enamel, with a homogenous sealing effect of the pits and fissure.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131112535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The choice of treatment should always be founded on basic principles of pathology and sound surgical judgment. Diode lasers have several distinct advantages over other therapy, as they provide a bloodless field and also allow histological examination without distortion, resulting in a painless postoperative period and no collateral damage to adjacent tissues. This article present two cases of fibrous hyperplasia occurring on gingiva and labial mucosa in the second decade of life, treated by diode laser therapy with 1 year follow-up and no recurrence.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123705106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Periodontics, the amount of gingiva is a critical factor in maintaining the health of periodontium. A very minimal loss of gingiva can at times produce esthetic problems or can be difficult to maintain for the patient. So any periodontal surgical procedure should be directed towards minimal loss of soft tissues. Periodontal procedures conducted with scalpel cause pain, post operative edema, scaring and would lead to soft tissue loss postoperatively. Hence, a tool which can efficiently conduct periodontal surgeries with minimal loss of soft tissue is required. In this facet, a soft tissue diode laser is the most appropriate tool. It can be very conveniently used for frenectomy, gingivectomy, vestibuloplasty, epulis excision, gingival depigmentation and second stage implant surgery. This article emphasizes that a diode laser is a suitable instrument for oral soft tissue surgeries.","PeriodicalId":345720,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental Lasers","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133609819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
