Detailed knowledge about renewable resources is an important factor, but it is difficult to obtain in most places; in the case of solar and wind resources, energetic potential could vary significantly according to the local conditions. Implementation of Measure Correlate-Predict (MCP) methodology offers a partial solution to this problem; however, the associated error related to the extrapolation process could be in some cases significant. Hence, this paper presents an analytical method to incorporate MCP extrapolation error on the simulation of smart residential energy systems. Beta probability distribution function (PDF) is used to model the extrapolation error and it is combined with a simulation model to estimate PDF of renewable power generation, battery state of charge, and power imported from the distribution system, which allows obtaining a complete perspective of energy system performance.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122879779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To ensure reliable operations of such systems, comprehensive threat modeling during system design and validation is of paramount significance. Previous works in literature mostly focus on safety, risks and hazards in CPS but lack effective threat modeling necessary to eliminate cyber vulnerabilities. Further, impact of cyber attacks on physical processes is not fully understood. This paper presents a comprehensive threat modeling framework for CPS using STRIDE, a systematic approach for ensuring system security at the component level. This paper first devises a feasible and effective methodology for applying STRIDE and then demonstrates it against a real synchrophasor-based synchronous islanding testbed in the laboratory. It investigates (i) what threat types could emerge in each system component based on the security properties lacking, and (ii) how a vulnerability in a system component risks the entire system security. The paper identifies that STRIDE is a light-weight and effective threat modeling methodology for CPS that simplifies the task for security analysts to identify vulnerabilities and plan appropriate component level security measures at the system design stage.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121990566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A minimum losses Optimal Power Flow is run off-line to devise the operating set points composing the primary regulation curve. In this way, after load perturbations, generators can reach an optimized operating point for a given and unique minimum losses energy flows distribution. The idea is to skip the hierarchical control architecture and provide a feasible and optimized operating point. A case study over 24 hours shows the effectiveness of this new approach as well as the improved operation quality of the system.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124661069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the development of active distribution grid management, various market designs arise. Here, a reference market framework is considered, which allocates the available flexibility products according to requests coming from both distribution and transmission system operators. The goal of this paper is to provide an identification procedure that is able to detect, identify and catalogue possible conflicts among the involved stakeholders that take place when requesting and/or acquiring ancillary services from flexible units. The investigation is carried out considering a 3-area power system which allows to take into account local constraints as well as system-wide needs. As outcome, this paper identifies the conflicts from both a theoretical and a practical point of view, by means of descriptions/identification procedure and by visual examples, respectively.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126898285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the analysis of the current barriers and opportunities of wind and solar power generation in the electricity markets, this paper focuses on the integration of solar power generation. Through the design and analysis of a case study with real production and market data, the work addresses the question of how better forecasting decreases the investment payback period of these producers, as well as the benefits of resorting to multi-service energy storage applications. The paper introduces a novel approach for multi-service energy storage sizing for applications in solar power plants that exploits the daily cycle of solar power production to explicitly model the provision of secondary and tertiary reserves during the night. The results show a clear benefit of deploying multi-service energy storage applications, namely from partaking in the provision of secondary and tertiary regulation reserves.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123655011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The role of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are analysed simulating three scenarios characterized by a different penetration of renewable sources. Simulations results prove that BESSs, differently from a past situation characterized by very low installations of wind and solar power plants, turn out to be important when the percentage of renewables installed power similar to that of Italian network in 2013 is considered. Positive results are also obtained simulating a hypothetical future situation in which the total installed power is mainly constituted by plants based on unpredictable sources.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121385130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to that, the interest in the electrification of the transport sector has brought about increasingly significant incentives for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). In this regard, the planning of the installation of DG units and EV charging stations should be carefully considered by system operators (SOs) in order to avoid stressing the network and extract operational flexibility. In this study, an optimal sizing and siting approach is proposed for DG units and EV charging stations. Furthermore, this study considers the time-varying nature of demand and production, which enables a more realistic outlook for the problem compared to a static consideration. The proposed approach is tested on a distribution system feeder in Istanbul, Turkey.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114636020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, fast primary frequency control and synthetic inertia are considered. The first objective is to assess whether, for high penetration levels of these two new regulations, system asymptotic stability is lost; the second is to study the sensitivity of performance indicators of frequency dynamics, such as the steady-state frequency deviation, the initial Rate Of Change Of Frequency (ROCOF), the maximum frequency deviation and the time of its occurrence, in the presence of large disturbances. The analysis is performed considering a single bus-bar model, first of a fictitious test system and then of the Sardinian power system. It is shown that the fast primary control has a predominant role to determine the maximum frequency deviation, while synthetic inertia mainly affects the initial ROCOF and the time of the maximum frequency error after the perturbation.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125976242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Encouraged by the importance of finding a cost-efficient and robust approach for flexible appliances, a proposed structure for a simplified dynamic tariff is analyzed in this study. The tariff is designed to enable selective shifting of load and decentralized generation. Its schedule is based on a complex reference signal. This study focuses on the choice of a fitting tariff incentive. A global and a local reference represented by an electricity spot market price and local distribution grid loads were considered. An analysis of the tariff requirements was carried out. The correlation between the created local and global tariffs was calculated. Critical peak load behavior of the tariff signals was analyzed. It is shown that the EPEX Day Ahead price can be used as a reliable global incentive signal for dynamic tariffs without impairing local grid load problems.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115796481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An alternative solution can be introduced by effective use of pseudo measurements along with enhanced state estimation methods. This paper proposes temporal and spatial correlation among loads as part of the modelling for an efficient state estimator, which is based on Conditional Multivariate Complex Gaussian Distribution (CMCGD) method. This approach can significantly reduce the error, measured by the Standard Deviation (SD) of the pseudo measurements. Finally, the real and pseudo measurements are included in this technique to estimate accurate branch currents and bus voltages. This method is applied to a distribution network and the results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed non-iterative algorithm for distribution networks with low numbers of measurement points.","PeriodicalId":345050,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115847396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
