The aim of this pilot study was to examine the relationship between emotional activation and the defense mechanism of denial. Few previous studies have investigated this topic while also exploring unconscious aspects of denial. Method: Three informants were interviewed in depth on two separate occasions (six interviews in total). The in-depth interviews were based on the psychoanalytic research interview as described by Cartwright (2004) and Holloway and Jefferson (2012). Results: The analysis showed that climate change was a highly emotional issue for two of the informants, who made use of denial as a distancing strategy. Conclusion: Denial is a common response to climate change, one that can lead to an absence of action and commitment. The restricted sample and method of the pilot study provided a weak basis for generalization, and further studies should use more stringent research designs. How do youths understand the ethos of openness about mental illness? Method: In this qualitative study, we conducted 15 semi-structured interviews and three focus groups with young adults aged 16–19, the majority recruited from psychology classes in upper secondary school. Thematic analysis was used to analyze data. Results: The participants shared the widespread perception that openness is an effective outlet for negative feelings and a way to combat stigmatization. However, we also found that the participants had more critical understandings of openness. Among the downsides of openness that were highlighted were potential misuse to gain attention, uncertainty regarding the legitimacy of the disease categories applied, and the potential romanticization of mental illness. Conclusion: The study indicates that a more nuanced, ambivalent attitude towards openness has become widespread among the younger generation. The users expressed satisfaction with the understanding from and collaboration with relatives. Prescription and survey data indicate increased occurrence of such ailments among young people. The aim of this study was to explore the trend in the assignment of mental health diagnoses among primary care physicians and in specialist health care. Methods: We linked data from the national primary care register Norwegian Control and Payment of Health Reimbursements Database (KUHR) and the Norwegian Patient Registry for specialist care for the years 2008–2018 for individuals born between 1986 and 1997. For each episode of care, we received information on age, sex and registered diagnosis. We estimated proportions of the population that had been diagnosed with various mental illnesses for the age groups 15–21 and 22–28 in the birth cohorts 1993–1997 and 1986–1990. Results: In the cohort that turned 21 years of age in 2018, 30% of women and 23% of men had been diagnosed with a mental illness during the period 2012–2018. The proportions increased from 23% for women and 21% for men in the cohort that turned 21 years of age in 2014. A similar increase was observed among those aged 22–28. Anxiety and depression-related diagnoses accounted for the greatest increases in both age groups. Implications: We find increased assignment of mental health diagnoses for young people during the period 2008–2018. This increase may be caused by a higher occurrence of mental health problems and illnesses, expanded treatment provision, change of diagnostic criteria among clinicians and/or a lower threshold for seeking help. The aim of this literature review, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind, is to investigate the significance of personality in chronic head and facial pain. Method: Systematic search based on PRISMA guidelines in PsycInfo, MedLine, Embase and Web of Science databases. Results: 11 studies were included. The results indicated that there is a connection between specific personality traits and pain perception and pain behavior, where openness, neuroticism, and extroversion from the five-factor model (FFM) are most prominent. High openness was associated with lower pain perception, high neuroticism was associated with greater discomfort from pain and pain behavior, while high extroversion was associated with less discomfort from pain and pain behavior. Studies based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) found fewer clear associations between chronic head and facial pain and personality. Conclusion: This literature review indicates that openness, neuroticism, and extroversion are related to pain perception and that standard personality tests find higher levels of correlation. A potential clinical implication is that tests that measure personality traits based on FFM, and particularly on NEO-PI-R, may have greater clinical value in planning and customizing treatment. Evidence-based psychological practice (EBPP) was developed partly as a response to this premise and described a broader foundation for good practice. However, EBPP did not give clear answers on the role and significance of treatment methods in evidence-based practice. The question remains an issue and has implications for the organization of service delivery to people with mental disorders. The goal of this article is to explore how clinicians could reason when faced with the question of which treatment method to choose. Even though different treatment methods may not differ notably in outcomes, there is still a need to establish their efficacy through research before integrating them in service delivery systems. Moreover, uncertainties exist regarding what the healing elements of psychotherapy are, as do challenges regarding the classification and conceptualization of mental disorders. Individual adaptation is an essential feature of EBPP, which implies that EBPP should be conceptualized as a dynamic process of hypothesis-based testing of methods in consultation with the client. The research has been carried out in a context where the relevance of music therapy is understood in light of children’s rights to inclusion and participation. Method: In two focus group interviews, preschool teachers, special education teachers and assistants described their experiences and use of music therapy. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings: The results indicate that music therapy facilitates contact, communication, sense of community and joy. When children receive music therapy as special education, the music is used actively by children and adults throughout the week for learning and participating in the preschool community. Implications: Special education provided in the form of music therapy can reduce exclusion and create an environment that promotes learning, development and participation in a community. The findings are discussed from a community psychology perspective. Although preliminary group evaluation data for BET are positive, some patients report negative experiences with the treatment. The overall aim was to gain new knowledge about patients’ reported negative experiences of BET in order to further develop this treatment. Method: We interviewed nine former female patients and analysed the data thematically, using an inductive, semantic approach. Three researchers and two research advisors with patient experiences in BET conducted the study. Results: Participants experienced, first, that their expectations of BET did not match their actual experiences. Second, patients experienced their relationships with BET therapists as unsafe, instrumental, mechanic and lacking in human warmth. Third, patients perceived a gap between their expectations and therapists’ intentions, leading to insecurity and a heavy sense of responsibility. Fourth, they felt that their symptoms were exacerbated during BET treatment in the form of more shame, self-hatred and loneliness. Implications: Participants’ experiences showed that the intended effects of the treatment did not always match patients’ experiences. It is imperative to further investigate patients’ experiences in order to develop BET as well as other treatments for these patients. Through its indirect, experimental, and often surprising depictions, fiction approaches the gap between experience and survival and can shed light on the complexities of trauma (Caruth, 2016). Here, Annie Ernaux's depictions of the narrativization process in her novel A girl's story (2016/2019) is used as a point of departure for reflections on how and under what circumstances it might be possible to find words for experiences that have neither been recognized by the person implied nor talked about before. Through close reading, and in dialog with psychoanalytic trauma theory, I discuss how we might understand the possibility of representing trauma symbolically and the different modes of such representation. The movement between an experiential and a more reflective mode is discussed as a feature of Ernaux's narrative that has enabled the integration of experiences in consciousness. I discuss how Ernaux's literary project described as “making the personal universal” can be understood as a process aimed at constituting a reality that had been cut off from history: directed towards the possibility of establishing a present external, and hence more authentic, internal witness to the events in the present.
