A proposition was made to develop a heated two-tank system, due to its multi-domain nature i.e. thermal-fluid, mechanical, electrical as well as its non-linear nature. The paper presents an analysis of a helical coil heat exchanger. A comparison is made between steam and water as a heat transfer medium. The study is conducted to determine which medium will be the most feasible to implement in a laboratory scale two-tank heated system. The convection coefficients on the hot and cold side of the helical coil are calculated to determine the inlet and outlet temperatures of the system. The temperatures are compared at various mass flows.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123247730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Wireless Power Transfer for LoRa Low-Power wide-area Networks (LPWANs)","authors":"Makhetha Molefi, E. Markus, A. Abu-Mahfouz","doi":"10.1109/ROBOMECH.2019.8704805","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ROBOMECH.2019.8704805","url":null,"abstract":"LPWANs are emerging to provide solutions for covering very low-power Internet of Things devices and applications which may be distributed over large geographical areas. LPWANs generally consume very low power thus their batteries can last for a very long time. However, the problem with batteries is that they get damaged with time and they eventually run out. Wireless power transfer on the other hand is gaining popularity for long range wireless networks. Motivated by these developments and the challenge of simultaneously conducting wireless power transfer alongside data communication, this paper proposes the use of magnetically coupled resonance wireless power transfer to power LPWAN devices. This approach allows the increase in distance between the transmitter and receiver and also curb the failure probability and degradation encountered by its coupling. The use of shielding materials and flux guidance is also incorporated into the system in order to increase the efficiency of the system. The analytical solutions to ferrite structures as shielding materials is computed with High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). HFSS is used to compute the S-parameters (input power reflection coefficient and forward power transmission coefficient) of the proposed system and magnetic characteristics by plotting electromagnetic field distributions.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123616510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rotor topologies considered include the surface mount, spoke type, radial bar and v-shaped topologies. Special attention is given to the optimization strategy and three alternative ways of formulating the optimization problem are given and the relative merits of each formulation are discussed. Performance calculations are based on 2D finite element analyses of all the critical operating points across the required operational speed range. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the material cost of the machine. Despite the popularity of interior permanent magnet machines, this study shows that the surface mount topology can be a strong competitor in this regard, even when a constant power speed range equal to four times the base speed is required.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128167235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each mill faces various challenges with regards to layout, loading, operational conditions and it’s utility. It is of utmost importance that the protection settings applied to the electrical infrastructure are efficient, accurate and reliable. This paper presents the analysis and design of protection settings applied to overcurrent relays in an industrial network. This is achieved by analyzing the past protection model designed and comparing it with the current system, thus highlighting the deficiencies. A short circuit and load flow analysis is carried out on the current system, using the engineering software ETAP (Electrical Transient Analysis Program). The result produced are than used to correctly implement new relay co-ordination settings to achieve fault discrimination within the network.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"292 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115928672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This will have a negative impact on the performance of three phase squirrel cage induction machine (SCIM). Changing the rotor bar shape also varies the resistance at different depths of the bar either increasing or decreasing the electromagnetic torque. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how both the stator slot opening widths and rotor bar shapes affect the performance of SCIMs that operate when healthy and when their rotor bars are broken. 2D Finite Element Method (FEM) is employed as a computational tool for modelling these SCIMs and the magnetostatic and transient analysis are carried out in order to study the torque, torque ripple, efficiency and power factor.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"425 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115608918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The consequences of leaving a deteriorated or broken service cable PEN conductor is examined for the TN-C-S earthing scheme using smart split meters. The feasibility of implementing a monitoring method is evaluated through system modelling and simulation as well as implementation on a physical setup. Simulation and experimental results indicated that it would indeed be able to approximate the service cable PEN conductor value but require more investigation regarding the behaviour of the incidental earthing impedance.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130224482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CP system design framework is destined to be used as a guideline when designing CP systems for structures such as tanks, underground pipelines, and plant areas within the petrochemical industry. Certain aspects of corrosion and corrosion mitigation are addressed in this paper. The research approach and analytical design methods used during the formulation of the proposed design framework are discussed. The verification and validation of the proposed design framework are addressed in terms of simulated and measured results for an underground pipeline network. The simulated results used for verification purposes were obtained from computer software utilizing the boundary element method in determining potential distributions on the surfaces of protected structures.","PeriodicalId":344332,"journal":{"name":"2019 Southern African Universities Power Engineering Conference/Robotics and Mechatronics/Pattern Recognition Association of South Africa (SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133452454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
