Dal and his supreme philological works)","authors":"František Heiser","doi":"10.5817/lb2022-2-5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5817/lb2022-2-5","url":null,"abstract":"The present scientific paper deals with the work of the unmissable Russian linguist, brilliant ethnographer and lexicographer, tireless collector of folklore material and at the same time an important writer of the middle of the 19th century − Vladimir Ivanovich Dal, whose 220th anniversary of birth we are commemorating this year. The actual legacy of his culminating, monumental lexicographical work, on which he worked for 53 years, the extensive and, from the point of view of linguistic diachrony and synchrony, Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language, forms the basis of this paper. In it we also find another of Dal's excellent, original and fascinating works – Proverbs of the Russian People. In the present paper we can also get acquainted with V. I. Dal's lively contacts with A. S. Pushkin, V. A. Zhukovsky and other prominent personalities of the time, as V. I. Dal was not only a philologist, but also a renowned physician, a sailor, the founder of the Russian Geographical Society, a prominent ministerial official, the author of textbooks on zoology, botany, physics, logic, and so on. The present article further acquaints us with the reactions of prominent linguists and other personalities of Russian spiritual life to the work of V. I. Dal, among whom we include, for example, Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, Ferdinand de Saussure, M. P. Pogodin, V. G. Belinsky, Andrei Belov, Vladimir Nabokov, Mikhail Sholokhov, Sergei A. Yesenin, A. I. Solzhenitsyn and others.","PeriodicalId":34396,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica Brunensia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71349538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The point is made, that the comparative analysis of syntax in Slavonic languages conducted by R. Mrazek allowed him to call neutralizing or absence of the verbal predicate in the sentence the distinctive feature of Russian sentence. In the article the author describes different aspects of the problem: the list of copulas, their functions in the sentence, their meanings and roles in organizing of the structure and shaping of the semantics of the sentence. The author states, that diversity of the approaches to the copula is determined by multidiversional nature of the verbal component in the sentence. The verb can perform different functions in the sentence: propositional, predicative, copulative and/or predictive function, thus it can play the role of the predicate, modifier, explicator, compensator, complicator and/or copula. Contemporary understanding of the copula is given with syntactic tradition in the background.","PeriodicalId":34396,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica Brunensia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71349923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even in Czech, the verb ESSE shows idiosyncratic morphological, syntactic and semantic properties. Their diversity in various overt syntactic constructions depending on the categorial distribution of the verb ESSE provides data for distinguishing the three ESSEs: (i) grammatical auxiliary (in the verbal complex [ESSE√js:finite – vP:-l-participle], with the meaning of [past], [realis], and in the verbal complex [ESSE√by:finite – vP:-l-participle], with the meaning of [–tense], [non realis]); (ii) lexical auxiliary (in the verbal complex [ESSE√bud:finite – Infinitive:Imperfective] with the meaning of [imperfective future]); (iii) non-auxiliary (e.g. copula). The properties of each ESSE are explained based on the position in which the root from which the ESSE form is derived is inserted into the structure, and the position where the derivation of the ESSE ends.","PeriodicalId":34396,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica Brunensia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71349933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
