The current paper deals with iris features extraction, based on dense descriptors. A dense descriptor captures the local details, pixel by pixel over the complete image. Three different techniques were employed: Local Binary Pattern, Local Phase Quantization and Differential Excitation in order to provide both spatial and frequency information. To evaluate the proposed system, experiments were performed on the UPOL database, by using a linear SVM classification scheme. Cache memory, the fastest component of the memory hierarchy, adapts to this new kind of parallel systems in order to provide the promised performance increase. Current cache designs have limitations that can be transformed into optimization opportunities both in hardware and software. This paper provides a detailed research of cache performance in multicore processors, considering critical hardware aspects. A new solution is proposed to improve the current performance: an optimized replacement policy for the shared cache level. Widely applied, tracking is essential for driving assistance applications, providing support for removing false positives and forcing the detection of border line true positives. We propose a multiple feature and temporal based pedestrian detector for far-infrared images. Our model benefits from a fast pedestrian candidate selection given by a three dimensional filtering of bounding boxes that are on the road, it gathers the accuracy of aggregated channel feature pedestrian detector and it is enhanced with a temporal based reasoning mechanism that allows an accurate identification of real pedestrians in the scene. Within the context of the proposed model we study the effects of different association rules for the detected pedestrians. Numerical experiments have been performed on several real-world and synthetic images for which the ground truth is known, being therefore able to compute the algorithm performance by comparing the obtained segmented image with the correct segmentation. To this purpose, the DICE coefficient has been used, which is one of the most popular similarity measures found in the literature. The Open Street Map (OSM) data is augmented with a new layer for road orientation and road intersections in order to support not only map matching, but also reasoning processes on the compliance to traffic regulations provided by traffic signs. In order to increase the accuracy of the road map, traces collected with a high precision GPS receiver are used in a probabilistic model of traffic lanes. A distribution of points across the road relative to the existing OSM center-line is obtained by learning Gaussian Mixture Models. A method for extracting accurate position for static points is also proposed and applied for positions of traffic signs. The need for an adaptive video stream arose as a mobile robot with real-time video streaming capability has been developed. ARC-ROVER is a robot that could connect to the Internet via 3G technology, and that could be controlled over the Internet while providing a video stream as a means of providing feedback to the user. In tests, apart from the latency resulted from network time and encoding and decoding processes, depending on the circumstances, the video stream's latency increased over time until the video stream was no longer usable due to its delay. Because these devices are generally thought to be wireless, small and cheap, in other words not very reliable, it is vital that we address the robustness problems in IoT. Applying standard fault tolerance models in IoT is impossible. The devices are not only heterogeneous, but unlike compute nodes, different devices have completely different capabilities and serve completely different functions (they have different sensors). We propose a model in which we describe the capabilities of each device and use this information to dynamically replace faulty devices with other, not-directly-compatible ones. Furthermore, our model uses the overlap between device characteristics in order to temporarily disable part of them and preserve energy. We show how the model can be applied on an IoT home security system, where robustness is critical. The information systems dedicated to this domain are multidisciplinary, highly distributed, and characterized by the co-existence of physical and computational artifacts. The paper introduces a modeling framework for the description and development of hazard management systems, implemented for prediction, decision support and early warning. For this reason, we must design perception algorithms that are robust and must perform in any environmental and weather conditions. Since fog is one of the most dangerous weather phenomena for driving we propose an embedded solution that is able to restore the contrast of images captured from a moving vehicle in fog conditions. Our solution is based on a state of the art contrast restoration algorithm and is able to provide high quality images in real time. The visibility in the enhanced images is greatly improved such that other image processing algorithms can be applied on the resulting images.
