{"title":"ACI Code Deflection Requirements-Time for a Change?","authors":"K. Bondy","doi":"10.14359/14381","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14381","url":null,"abstract":"The paper presents a critical examination of the current American Concrete Institute's (ACI) Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-02) that controls flexural deflection in reinforced concrete members, with a focus on two-way non-prestressed slabs. Current code deflection criteria require the computation of deflections only to justify slab thicknesses less than those specified as minimum in the code. The paper recommends that the code should require deflection computations and conformance in all cases, and to eliminate or modify the minimum thickness criteria in the code.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. {"title":"Time-Dependent Cracking and Crack Control in Reinforced Concrete Structures","authors":"R. Gilbert","doi":"10.14359/14387","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14387","url":null,"abstract":"The paper reviews an investigation of cracking under sustained service loads for reinforced concrete flexural elements and restrained direct tension members. Reliable design models using the tension chord model are presented and are shown to be suitable for predicting the time varying width and spacing of cracks caused by bending and/or shrinkage. Also reported are crack widths and crack spacings from laboratory tests on 12 beams and slabs subjected to sustained loads for periods up to 400 days in order to quantify the effects of steel area, steel stress, bar diameter, bar spacing, concrete cover and concrete shrinkage. In addition, crack widths and spacings induced by shrinkage in eight restrained direct tension members are reported.Predictions made using the analytical design models are compared to the experimental observations and agreement is satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. Theory of Elastic Analysis-Illusion and Superstition 弹性分析理论——幻觉与迷信

Furlong","doi":"10.14359/14373","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14373","url":null,"abstract":"This paper argues that the theory of elastic analysis can provide reliable estimates of strength required at all critical points of reinforced concrete structures. Discrepancies between estimated and \"actual\" design forces may exceed 25% of the estimated values, but flexurally ductile concrete members will deform inelastically to accommodate required loading without rupture. Discrepancies between estimated and \"actual\" service load forces generally will not be large enough to reveal undesirable cracking. Additionally, the theory of elastic analysis offers the least complex technique to be used for the various load combinations required for designing members that resist combined load cases on frames that sway.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. {"title":"Analysis of 1-D Tension Stiffening with Discrete Cracks","authors":"D. Yankelevsky, M. Jabareen","doi":"10.14359/14377","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14377","url":null,"abstract":"The paper describes the development of a new one dimensional (1-D) model to simulate tension stiffening of cracked concrete. The model formulates the analytical relationships through stiffness of the concrete-rebar composite and assembles a set of finite elements. One of the advantages of the element's formulation identified was that its stiffness matrix is exact in that it is derived from the governing differential equations of the composite element. Using the formulation provides a complete 1-D distribution of stresses, strains and displacements along the rebar as well as the bond stress and slip variation along the common interface. The paper presents numerical examples to demonstrate the model capabilities and its predictions.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. Poston","doi":"10.14359/14386","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14386","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents an alternative procedure for computing restrained stresses induced by shrinkage and temperature effects. A method is proposed by which an equivalent shrinkage stress is calculated. The stress obtained is then used to design the shrinkage and temperature tendons. The equivalent shrinkage stresses calculated considering the restraint acting on the slab provided by elements such as columns and shear walls. The results show that this restraint, which is a function of the respective stiffness of the restraining elements, is very significant and its effect must be considered if shrinkage and temperature cracking is to be effectively controlled by either tendons or mild steel reinforcement.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. The use of high strength concrete allows engineers to design beams with longer spans using the capacity of the beam and thus using higher amounts of prestressing strands or higher effective prestressing values. The research discussed in this paper provides a better understanding of cracking and serviceability deflection behavior of HSC beams post tensioned with unbonded tendons.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. The study included a level of prestressing as a variable, and provides a substantial wealth of crack width data for partially posttensioned sections. A follow up study was conducted at Penn State University for structural members with a combination of pretensioning and posttensioning, such as found in spliced girder applications. This study also included an investigation of cracking behavior. This paper compares the measured crack width data to existing crack width prediction models along with a discussion of the effectiveness of each method.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G. It utilises waste materials such as fly ash and has a very low rate of green house gas emission. This paper presents the study of the performance of fly ash based geopolymer concrete to sulfate attack. Test specimens were soaked in sodium sulfate solution and sulfuric acid solution for various periods of time, and the performance of geopolymer concrete is studied by evaluating the effect on the compressive strength, change in length and change in mass. Test results show that exposure to sodium sulfate has no significant effect on geopolymer concrete, whereas exposure to sulfuric acid affects the compressive strength.","PeriodicalId":341120,"journal":{"name":"SP-225: Serviceability of Concrete: A Symposium Honoring Dr. Edward G.
