With the surge in demand for portable computers and cellular phones, consumers are becoming more sophisticated about the various aspects of battery-powered equipment, such as the charge rate, self-discharge, and temperature characteristics of nickel cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium-ion batteries. Users are beginning to demand advanced battery management features. The sophistication of battery and power management systems is now being evaluated in the marketplace. As a result, new standards are being proposed that will standardize battery management across the industry. This paper discusses new and existing battery chemistries, evaluates the movement toward standardized battery management and battery packs, and offers an application example using a sophisticated battery management circuit.","PeriodicalId":341055,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southcon '95","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125286729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Development and advances in the fields of speech recognition, DSP microprocessors, and memories (especially flash memories) make it possible to design and implement a device that can take words or sentences or even sounds on the input and maps or translate them into synthesized speech on the output in any other language in real time. This device opens the door for a wide range of applications spanning the range from pure language translation to enabling the speech and hearing impaired individuals to communicate via speech. Other applications include speech based warehouse inventory and computer directed maintenance and troubleshooting. The last application is especially needed when used in closed and crowded quarters such as tanks, cockpits, etc. The paper discusses and presents the technical details along with examples of different applications possible with this device.","PeriodicalId":341055,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southcon '95","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114929685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using an inverter circuit to generate a square wave for a DC source can supply a crude approximation of an AC wave form. Obviously, the harmonic content is high and voltage regulation and current limiting are essentially non-existent. The microcontroller brings complex timing functions to the design equation. Also, the microcontroller can dynamically adjust the wave forms for both voltage and current regulation. Because of the speed of the microcontroller and its ability to determine when errant conditions on the incoming power line occur, a UPS can be constructed that can switch reliable, temporary power onto the electrical load before any devastating effects occur.","PeriodicalId":341055,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southcon '95","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116407040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary advantage of the AER Energy Advanced Technology Battery is that its energy density on a weight basis is three times that of nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lead acid batteries, and fifty percent higher than lithium ion batteries. This new battery technology can enable full featured portable computers with 10-20 hours of run-time with little or no increase in system weight. Portable computers with ten hours of run-time that incorporate large active matrix color screens, CD ROM players, faster processors or cellular communication capabilities will be possible. We propose a new replacement technique that uses some heuristic to detect loop structures in the reference patterns. Initially, the proposed technique uses the least recently used (LRU) strategy. Once a loop has been detected, all the references, which would result in poor performance if they were to be cached, will be dynamically excluded from being stored in the cache. The LRU strategy will resume as soon as the end of the loop has been detected. We have also developed a simulation program to compare the performance of this scheme to that of other related ones so as to demonstrate its effectiveness. The results show our scheme outperforms the others when the system references are loop dominated.","PeriodicalId":341055,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southcon '95","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123481307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The decoding part is relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. However, the encoding of full-size, high-quality video in real-time remains a complex and costly matter for the compression algorithms currently in use. A real-time digital video compression system (DVCS) has been developed to provide a solution to this problem, and make real-time video applications such as videoconferencing, digital video editing and several others affordable. Three-dimensional subband coding is used in the compression process because this algorithm is most compatible with the human visual system. The DVCS described in this paper is based on a simple subband coding algorithm which can be implemented in ASIC form with less than 50,000 gates. Hence, a much simpler and less expensive encoder/decoder chip can be implemented. The DVCS supports full screen, full-motion images at 30 frames/sec. A number of other standard resolution formats such as CCIR 601, CIF and QCIF are also supported. The intrinsic scalability of subband coding makes the compression system expandable to high-definition television by simply adding an additional image detail band.","PeriodicalId":341055,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southcon '95","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114755693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is due to the simplicity of the technique, and to its ability to solve very complicated problems. Scattering from an infinitely long perfect electrical conductor (PEC) cylinder is studied to show how accuracy varies with field sampling point location. It is shown that accuracy varies with respect to the location of the field sampling point, and convergence at one point does not guarantee that the other points in the problem space have converged. Scattering from a PEC cylinder is also used to show how low frequency field solutions are affected by the number of time steps used in the FDTD algorithm. For low-frequency solutions, the FDTD algorithm has to run long enough to capture the low frequency spectra. Additionally, the absorbing boundaries have to be placed far away enough so that reflections do not contaminate the low frequency spectra of the signal.","PeriodicalId":341055,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southcon '95","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131578218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present paper we analyze some of the properties of the suggested quadratically saturating control, and extend the previous results to the systems with only partial state information and/or unknown parameters. We note that the idea of adaptive control design for open-loop unstable systems with constraints was the original motivation for the analysis in the previous paper.
