The need to support big data and data analytics are challenging many of the typical scenarios and paradigms associated with software engineering. In the digital age, data is often messy, distributed and growing exponentially. In this context there are swathes of technologies that are shaping the landscape for dealing with these phenomenon. Cluster and high performance computing has been a core approach for processing larger scale data sets, but Cloud computing has now gained increasing prominence and acceptance. In this context, training and educating the next generation of software engineers to be savvy Cloud application developers is essential. Prof Sinnott has taught Cluster (HPC) and Cloud Computing at the University of Melbourne for 5 years and exposed students to the latest technologies for big data analytics. Many of these efforts are shaped by the portfolio of major projects utilising numerous big data technologies within the Melbourne eResearch Group (www.eresearch.unimelb.edu.au). This presentation covers the pedagogy of the course and describes the way in which it utilizes national cloud and storage resources made available across Australia. Examples of the shaping eResearch projects and the solutions developed by the students are illustrated to demonstrate the practical experiences in developing Cloud-based solutions that focus especially on 'big data' challenges.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122064421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud Business Intelligence is a new technology to handle big data storing, sharing, and computing. Business Intelligence is a management concept which discuses about data processing, and extracting business information from raw business data. It helps to improve business management and make optimized business decisions that leads to improve the performance and financial benefits of the organization. The other important technology for big data computing is the concept of cloud computing, a notion in information technology area. Cloud computing is a model which provides a general access to the shared resources and services, such as infrastructure, platform, and software. Cloud Business Intelligence refers to the combination of the mentioned technologies. This notion provides Business Intelligence as a service over a cloud environment. The goal of this research is exploring effects and factors of using cloud business intelligence in banking systems. This study addresses the benefits, problems, and challenges of using cloud business intelligence in the banking systems, and examines the impact of using this technology on the reliability and credibility of banking systems. The purpose of this study is helping banking systems to move from using traditional models towards applying cloud ones, increase reliability, availability, and transactions speed, reduce the cost of banks, and in other words, moving towards modern banking systems. The results help us to select the best type of cloud business intelligence for a specific organization based on the characteristics of that.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116968046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed streaming frameworks are designed to process such data in real time with reasonable time constraints. Apache Heron is a production-ready large-scale distributed stream processing framework. The network is of utmost importance to scale streaming applications to large numbers of nodes with a reasonable latency. High performance computing (HPC) clusters feature interconnects that can perform at higher levels than traditional Ethernet. In this paper the authors present their findings on integrating Apache Heron distributed stream processing system with two high performance interconnects; Infiniband and Intel Omni-Path and show that they can be utilized to improve performance of distributed streaming applications.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126203241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As these edge devices are in proximity to users, this results in improved application response times and reduces load on the cloud data center (cdc). In this paper, we propose a security and deadline aware scheduling algorithm called RT-SANE (Real-Time Security Aware scheduling on the Network Edge). Applications with stringent privacy requirements are scheduled on an mdc closer to the user, whereas others can be scheduled on a cdc or a remote mdc. We also discuss how application performance and network latency influence the choice of an mdc or cdc. The intuition is that due to a lower communication latency between the user & the mdc, more applications are able to meet their deadlines when run on the mdc. Conversely, applications with loose deadlines may be executed on a cdc. In order to facilitate this, we also propose a distributed orchestration architecture and protocol that is both performance & security aware. Simulation results show that RTSANE offers superior real-time performance compared to a number of other scheduling policies in an Edge computing environment, while meeting application privacy requirements.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128470370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the development of building efficient HPC clouds, more and more MPI-based HPC applications start running on cloud-based environments. Singularity is one of the most attractive container technologies to build HPC clouds due to the claimed reproducible environments across the HPC centers. However, our investigations in the literature show that there is a lack of a systematical study on evaluating the performance of Singularity with various benchmarks and applications on different types of HPC platforms. Without these studies, it remains difficult to tell the community whether Singularity-based container technology is ready or not for running MPI applications on HPC clouds to gain desired performance. To fill this gap in the literature, as a third-party, we first propose a four-dimension evaluation methodology to cover various aspects and based on that, we conduct extensive studies on evaluating the performance of Singularity on modern processors, and high-performance interconnects. Performance results prove that Singularity-based container technology can achieve near-native performance for both Intel Xeon and Intel Xeon Knights Landing (KNL) platforms with different memory access modes (i.e., cache, flat). Singularity also shows very little overhead for running MPI-based HPC applications on both Omni-Path and InfiniBand networks. With the verification of our results, we believe that Singularity can be used for building next-generation HPC clouds with near-native performance as well as desired cloud features such as easy management and deployment.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129325345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the presence of node failures, data blocks on the failed nodes are re-replicated to other remaining nodes in the system randomly, thus leading to workload imbalance. Balancing all the server workloads namely, re-replication workload and current running user's application workload during the re-replication phase has not been adequately addressed. With a reactive approach, re-replication can be scheduled based on current resource utilization but by the time replication kicks off, actual resource usage may have changed as resources are continuously in use. In this paper, we propose a proactive re-replication strategy that uses predicted CPU utilization, predicted disk utilization, and popularity of the replicas to perform re-replication effectively while ensuring all the server workloads are balanced. We consider both reliability of a data block and performance status of nodes in making decision for re-replication. Simulation results from synthetic workload data demonstrate that all the servers' utilization is balanced and our approach improves performance in terms of re-replication throughput and re-replication time compared to baseline Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). Our proactive approach maintains the balance of resource utilization and avoids the occurrence of servers' overload condition during re-replication.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124122286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such kind of factory, manufacturing processes and final products are accompanied by virtual models -- Digital Twins. To support Digital Twins concept, a simulation model for each process or system should be implemented as independent computational service. The only way to implement an orchestration of a set of independent services and provide scalability for simulation is to use a cloud computing platform as a provider of the computing infrastructure. In this paper, we describe a Digital Twin-as-a-Service (DTaaS) model for simulation and prediction of industrial processes using Digital Twins.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116154067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Video streaming will construct more than 80% of the whole Internet traffic by 2019. Currently, video stream providers offer little or no interactive services on their streamed videos. Stream viewers, however, demand a wide variety of interactive services (e.g., dynamic video summarization or dynamic transcoding) on the streams. Taking into account the long tail access pattern to video streams, it is not feasible to pre-process all possible interactions for all video streams. Also, Processing them is also not feasible on energy- and compute-limited viewers' thin-clients. The proposed research provides a cloud-based video streaming engine that enables interactive video streaming. Interactive Video Streaming Engine (IVSE) is generic and video stream providers can customize it by defining their own interactive services, depending on their applications and their viewers' desires. The engine enacts the defined interactive services through on-demand processing of the video streams on potentially heterogeneous cloud services, in a cost-efficient manner, and with respect to stream viewers' QoS demands.","PeriodicalId":341011,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the10th International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing","volume":"202 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116218902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
