Social networks fulfill the need of users to stay connected to friends and other people interested in the same issues. Combining social networks to the mobile environment is a growing interest of mobile device users as it allows the users to be in their online social community despite their mobility. This paper introduces one social networking approach on the mobile environment. The approach is based on dynamic group creation and management in the PeerHood environment. A reference implementation of a social networking application built on top of PeerHood is presented.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123466185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we start by isolating customers from each other and at a later stage provide mechanisms to offer adequate SLAs.\u0000 As each client is isolated in a self-contained environment we are able to decouple them from the platform (and from the underlying node) to offer mobility among nodes. The advantages of this approach are two-fold: 1) ability to cope with node failures by migrating customers to healthy nodes and 2) optimization of global resource resource usage and further enforcement of SLA by migrating customers to nodes with adequate resources available.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128497275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Common approaches to QoS monitoring are primarily based on a centralized model that we found to be inadequate in large-scale and high-volume computing environments, such as Intel's Assembly and Test manufacturing facilities. The main reasons are: scalability, issues related to practical deployment, and reconfigurability.\u0000 In this paper, we will present a peer-to-peer approach that works by transparently turning a web service into a potential QoS monitor for all activities that flow through it. A lightweight middleware component, residing within the web service implementation, provides this transparency. The middleware component collects QoS metrics from a web service during activity processing and embeds the metrics within the business data payload. This allows the peers of that service to receive QoS metrics, apply specific monitoring rules, or take specific actions as the activity flows from one web service to the next. This decentralized pattern allows activities of different complexity and length to be monitored seamlessly. We will discuss our experience in implementing and using this technique at Intel's high-volume Assembly and Test manufacturing environment that span across multiple continents and geographic regions.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128689704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It gives the possibility to install, to activate, to update and to uninstall application modules without needing to restart the host Java Virtual Machine. However, modules run on the memory space, and it is not possible to ensure that objects from unavailable (e.g. uninstalled) modules will no longer be referenced, since it depends on developers to correctly provide code that will handle the corresponding OSGi events which inform the departure of a module. Such errors, resulted from the mishandling of the dynamic arrival and departure of modules, are a hard to detect problem described in the OSGi specification as Stale References. It may lead to inconsistencies in application's behavior, state and memory. So far there were no tools addressing the diagnostics of this issue. In this demo we present the live utilization of our experimental tool, Service Coroner, which helps OSGi application developers and administrators in the diagnosis of stale references. Our presentation focus on the diagnosis of actual OSGi based applications that present the occurrence of stale references upon dynamic updates of modules.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114904045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Movement of nodes and network partitioning can require frequent and possibly expensive reorganizations of the publish/subscribe system. Many approaches towards publish/subscribe in MANETs either rely explicitly on location information, or are characterized by a high subscription and publication overhead. In this paper we present preliminary research on how geographical distribution of subscriptions may help to overcome some shortcomings of both approaches.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125299957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it remains hard to build collaborative applications in which information is shared within teams. We present a new drag-and-drop technology, in which standard office documents (spreadsheets, databases, etc.) are interconnected with eventdriven middleware (\"live distributed objects\"), to create distributed applications in which changes to underlying data propagate quickly to downstream applications. Information is replicated in a consistent manner, making it easy for team members to share updates and to coordinate their actions. In this demo, we present our middleware platform in office automation settings which is highly automated and highly configurable.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132612904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gridkit provides the services required to support wireless sensor network based environmental monitoring and also hosts lightweight hydraulic models which are used to provide timely alerts to local residents warning of imminent flood events. In this scenario, Gridkit abstracts over a number of low-level sensing, computational and networking technologies. This paper and associated demonstration will show that using distributed dynamic reconfiguration, these heterogeneous sensor network technologies may be safely adapted to cope with changing environmental conditions while providing timely flood warnings, resulting in significant power savings and performance improvements.","PeriodicalId":340887,"journal":{"name":"Companion '08","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124606656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
