Taking this into account, this present study is proposed to find out the effectiveness of an innovative pedagogical strategy namely teams-game-tournament as the type of cooperative learning model to teach grammar in an online learning setting. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design involving ten graders of senior high school (N=56). They come from two groups: the experimental group using teams-game-tournaments and the control group with only the traditional in-class lectures. The results obtained from the t-test using SPSS confirmed that there is a significant difference in students’ grammar scores that were taught using the strategy compared to students’ scores in the control group without the treatment. In order words, the use of the given strategy is more effective to enhance students’ English grammar, particularly in the correlative conjunction understanding.","PeriodicalId":34019,"journal":{"name":"Metathesis Journal of English Language Literature and Teaching","volume":"42 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77175472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative research was conducted as a case study in two classes of a midwifery study program. Document analysis of 89 student response sheets and interviews with four students constituted the data. Brown (2004)'s difficulty index (IF) formula was used to analyze the quantitative data, while Miles and Huberman's interactive model (2004) was used to analyze the qualitative data. The findings revealed that students' difficulties stemmed from three factors: inadequate vocabulary knowledge, insufficient TOEFL practice, and interference from their native language. In addition, the students' extrinsic motivation negatively affected both their learning and test performance.","PeriodicalId":34019,"journal":{"name":"Metathesis Journal of English Language Literature and Teaching","volume":"243 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89040997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims at (1) investigating the types of jokes on Google Assistant application, and (2) describing linguistic aspects used in the jokes. There were several steps in conducting this study. Firstly, the data of this study were the jokes taken from “tell me a joke” feature on Google Assistant. As many as 58 jokes were collected as the data. Then, the data were coded and analysed based on its linguistic aspects in terms of sounds, meanings, and word formations. After all data were analysed, conclusions were drawn. There are two forms of jokes in this application namely riddle and one liner. In riddle, the jokes are presented in question-answer form, whereas one liner joke only consists of one or two sentences. There are several linguistic aspects in creating the jokes, namely homonyms, minimal pair, substitution of sounds, onomatopoeia, phrase and words with similar pronunciation, idiomatic phrase, addition of sound and word combination. Among those aspects, homonyms are the most frequently utilized in the jokes. Jokes are beneficial for language learners to learn the real use of the language, thus further studies on jokes are suggested. \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":34019,"journal":{"name":"Metathesis Journal of English Language Literature and Teaching","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81168385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The teacher-researcher needs to do a pre-reading activity to scaffold students' reading comprehension in narrative text. VLP (Vocabulary, Language, Prediction) is an appropriate strategy to improve students' reading achievement by mastering vocabulary before the main reading activity. The students in grade X of SMK with low English reading achievement were taught English, especially reading comprehension in narrative text. Before the strategy was implemented, the average score was 41.1. Then, the Classroom Action Research was conducted, and the VLP strategy was applied. After implementing two cycles of CAR, the average score reached 77.8. It proves that by applying the VLP strategy, students can improve their reading comprehension. Students' motivation in learning English also increased as well as their self-confidence to express their thoughts in class discussions.","PeriodicalId":34019,"journal":{"name":"Metathesis Journal of English Language Literature and Teaching","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79785003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the pandemic, English language learners could not complete their learning in the traditional class. To maintain learners learning, most universities have adopted online teaching. Assessment and feedback are critical components of instructional scaffolding, particularly in the online learning environment. These components highlight how English language learners can aid in accomplishing learning objectives and developing self-regulated experiences. This study aimed to explore the design of assessment and feedback of online teaching activities and online teaching processes adopted by English lecturers during the pandemic. The ethnographic case study design is the framework to outline qualitative research. This thematic approach confirms the qualitative researcher’s active participation in identifying assessment and feedback patterns in enhancing English language learners. Given the complexity of assessing and feedback, the study discovered that assessing and feedback could enhance learning English in online situations. These are included the specification of 15 characterizations of the assessment aspect, 15 recommendation elements for conducting the online assessment, and 10 practical online feedback features. The description assessment and feedback remain inextricably and undeniably connected. Online feedback means to be the English lecturers’ reaction to an English learner’s performance.
