The exact manner in which code VCV activities are planned and conducted, however, is critically important. It is suggested that the way in which code validation, in particular, is often conducted-by comparison to published experimental data obtained for other purposes-is in general difficult and unsatisfactory, and that a different approach is required. This paper describes a proposed methodology for CFD code VCV that meets the technical requirements and is philosophically consistent with code development needs. The proposed methodology stresses teamwork and cooperation between code developers and experimentalists throughout the VCV process, and takes advantage of certain synergisms between CFD and experiment. A novel approach to uncertainty analysis is described which can both distinguish between and quantify various types of experimental error, and whose attributes are used to help define an appropriate experimental design for code VCV experiments. The methodology is demonstrated with an example of laminar, hypersonic, near perfect gas, 3-dimensional flow over a sliced sphere/cone of varying geometrical complexity.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. Both anemometers use a diode laser as a light source and an avalanche photodiode for detecting scattered light. The aircraft was flown in different atmospheric conditions, e.g. close to temperature inversion layers, in clouds and in polluted air above industrial regions to investigate whether it is possible to measure without artificially seeding air. The optical access was provided by two glass inserts in the emergency exit of the aircraft. Measurement volumes were traversed through the flow perpendicular to the fuselage. In this manner, the anemometers measured mean velocities, turbulence levels and for L2F additionally to these quantities the flow direction in the boundary layer of the fuselage. A ground test with the anemometers was performed before the flight tests. Experience with parallel operation of the anemometers was gained in a free jet and properties of both systems were investigated. Information from the tests enabled us to analyze performance data in the free jet and in flight. The experiment shows that laser anemometry can be applied successfully for in-flight flow measurements. The inherent characteristics of the technique are exploited extensively in windtunnel tests and in other ground applications, and are also promising for in-flight experiments. In particular the absence of flow disturbance, the high bandwidth and the high accuracy are useful in flight.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. A simultaneous application of three holographic diagnostic techniques, namely, schlieren- and shadowgraphy, moire deflectometry and interferometry, yields a more accurate measurement of the density distribution in complex compressible flow fields. The holographic approach makes it possible to increase the sensitivity of the interferometric measurements with compensation of the optical aberration to suit the low density field of hypersonic flows. Preliminary experiments with the new approach rendered satisfactory results, proving the potential use of these techniques.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. In the study of turbomachinery, refractory seed materials are required for seeding the flow due to the high temperatures encountered. In this work we present a pH stabilization technique commonly employed in ceramic processing to obtain stable dispersions for generating aerosols of refractory seed material. By adding submicron alumina particles to a preadjusted pH solution of ethanol, a stable dispersion is obtained which when atomized produces a high quality aerosol. Commercial grade alumina powder is used with a moderate size distribution. Other metal oxide powders in various polar solvents could also be used once the point of zero charge (PH/sub pzc/) of the powder in the solvent has been determined. Laser anemometry measurements obtained using the new seeding technique are compared to measurements obtained using Polystyrene Latex (PSL) spheres as the seed material.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. Fringe centerlines are extracted by locating intensity extrema in the image. Edge detection using a dual threshold is employed as a guide for approximately locating the extrema and data smoothing via Chebyshev polynomial approximation is used to unambiguously locate the extrema. Quantitative pressure coefficient distributions result from the procedure.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. The basic design and operation of the LENS tunnel is briefly reviewed. Intrusive and non-intrusive instrumentation which are being employed to measure the distribution of properties in the exit plane of the nozzle and over hypervelocity vehicle configurations are described. The surface heat transfer, pressure and skin friction instrumentation which are routinely employed to define the aerothermal properties of hypersonic vehicles are discussed. The aero-optical instrumentation suite which has been developed specifically for the LENS facility to measure seekerhead performance is discussed in detail. Finally, we present instrumentation which will be used to measure the performance of hypersonic scramjet combustion in the LENS facility at velocities from 6000 ft/sec to 15000 ft/sec.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. It is shown that the wire gauge is the more sensitive device in terms of response to the flow whilst, at the same time, being the more robust of the two gauges. This paper describes two recent applications (flow visualization and velocimetry) in low density hypersonic wind tunnels using a multi-purpose electron gun. Flow visualization, obtained by sweeping the electron beam to illuminate a sheet in the flow, is useful to follow density variations and expose shock waves. It is here applied to study interferences between shock waves issued from two models placed in a Mach 10 flow. Velocity measurements have also been carried out by using a pulsed electron beam to tag a flow with afterglowing plasma columns for optical time of flight detection.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record. Therefore, the construction of a laser Doppler anemometer is demanded to realize these measurements. Based on the construction of the miniature-LDA, boundary layer measurements with very high spatial resolution of 25 /spl mu/m were possible. The opto-mechanical head of this BL-MLDA has a construction length of only 35 mm. The added electronics are battery-driven and consume under 1 W electrical power. The changes in observed color were assessed, using digital analysis of CCD video recordings, in terms of the hue, saturation and intensity. The measurement program included the assessment of crystal behavior under the following conditions: (i) turbulent boundary layer at Mach 3, (ii) around a half model in a Mach 2 boundary layer, and (iii) whilst being mechanically sheared in a rotational rig. The results show that the various crystal formulations possess different characteristics which cannot be defined simply by the viscosity of the crystal mixture.","PeriodicalId":339620,"journal":{"name":"ICIASF '95 Record.
