Over the last five years, the performance of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has improved considerably. In this paper, the parameters of importance for characterizing SOAs are introduced and their significance in characterizing fiber links performance are pointed out. In particular, the gain, the concept of signal-to-noise ratio at the input and output of the amplifier, the overall noise figure of an SOA, the saturation power, the electrical and optical signal-to-noise ratios are discussed. This paper also demonstrate how SOAs can get around the thermal noise limit of standard optical p-i-n detectors/pre-amplifiers and reach an optimal sensitivity of 44.5 photons per bit at a bit-error-rate (BER) of 1 /spl times/ 10/sup -9/, despite the degradation caused by spontaneous-emission noise.","PeriodicalId":339133,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference Avionics Fiber-Optics and Photonics, 2005.","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131226828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, COTS transceivers are generally not designed specifically to meet avionics environmental requirements. Avionics system designers are facing with a new challenge in selecting the best COTS transceivers, which meet the system cost and performance objectives. Before starting a rigorous qualification test process, a strategy to down select COTS transceivers for specific avionics systems is to utilize extended temperature range testing to identify robust COTS transceivers for avionics system applications. In this paper, we describe some of the extended temperature characterization results for COTS bi-directional (BiDi) transceiver at 125 Mb/s.","PeriodicalId":339133,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Conference Avionics Fiber-Optics and Photonics, 2005.","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114758272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
