Métodos: a população estudada foi composta por idosos jovens (60-79) e longevos (80 ou mais). Para comparar o desempenho entre os dois grupos de idosos foi realizado um questionário sociodemográfico e um de saúde, que avaliou também atividades semanais e satisfação em relação à funcionalidade familiar. Igualmente foi investigada a presença de sintomas depressivos através da Escala de Depressão Geriátrica Reduzida. Resultados: foram avaliados 135 idosos, entre eles, 111 jovens e 24 longevos. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas avaliações cognitivas entre os dois grupos. A escolaridade elevada foi um fator significativo para o melhor desempenho no Miniexame do Estado Mental. Ter poucos sintomas depressivos, manter-se fisicamente ativo e ter o hábito de ler semanalmente também foram fatores importantes para melhor desempenho no Miniexame do Estado Mental. Conclusão: concluímos que o bom nível educacional, a baixa prevalência de sintomas depressivos, a boa autopercepção de saúde e a prática regular de atividade física foram variáveis importantes na manutenção do bom nível cognitivo, tanto em idosos jovens quanto em idosos longevos.","PeriodicalId":338961,"journal":{"name":"PAJAR - Pan-American Journal of Aging Research","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124803638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: intervention research with 29 elderly men (n=7) and women (n=22), all from the University of Cruz Alta community. The intervention consisted of a Program to use digital technologies and practice physical activity (walking). It had weekly meetings (total of 16 meetings) of approximately 90 minutes, first using digital technologies – computers and internet (approximately 60 minutes) and then walking (30 minutes). Cognitive function was measured by the Mini Mental State Examination. Sex, age, marital status, education, disease diagnosis, vision problems, medication, use of tobacco and alcohol and functional capacity were also collected through a questionnaire. The Body Mass Index was also checked. Participants were assessed before and after the program. The data were analyzed by paired Student’s t-test with a 5% probability. Results: it was evident that the proposed program improved cardiorespiratory fitness (519.14 pre-test - 583.86 post-test, p = 0.005) and cognitive ability (25.90 pre-test - 26.21 post-test, p> 0.001) of participants, in addition to influencing the cessation of tobacco use (20.7%). Conclusion: these results show the importance of programs aimed at the cognitive improvement of elderly people, and health variables, considering that these can and should be inserted in health care settings.","PeriodicalId":338961,"journal":{"name":"PAJAR - Pan-American Journal of Aging Research","volume":"62 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133914731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the variables of interest were investigated with instruments about the socio-economic profile, aspects of physical and professional activities, eating and sleeping habits. RESULTS: 312 elderly people were interviewed, with a prevalence of depressive symptoms of 30.5%. A higher prevalence of depressive symptoms were found in women, individuals older than 81 years, from the low class, living alone, physically inactive, and retired. In the adjusted analysis, the non-practice of physical activity, low sleep quality, and daily sleeping medication were statistically associated with the outcome. In contradiction to the literature, our results refute the well-established gender roles that preconize that males are more affected by physical impairment, while the females are more affected by psychological and psychiatric disorders. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, it is important to identify the prevalence of depressive symptoms in a population commonly affected by other diseases. In addition, characteristics associated with depression were detected, which can help prevent or improve depression in this age group.","PeriodicalId":338961,"journal":{"name":"PAJAR - Pan-American Journal of Aging Research","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123386295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: This is an exploratory cross-sectional study carried out in 2017 with a group of elderly people over 60 years of age and without cognitive deficits, linked to a health plan operator, all residents of the city of São Paulo, SP. The WHOQOL-BREF and WHOQOL-Old self-filled questionnaires were applied and the elderly participants also answered questionnaires relating to sociodemographic, morbidities and the usage of services developed by the researchers. RESULTS: The research group evaluates their quality of life as good and is satisfied with their health, but some points stand out. For said group, living by themselves, having cardiocirculatory diseases or having more than one chronic disease influenced negatively their quality of life, whereas being in a stable unionship and having access to consultations with intervals below six months interfered positively. It was observed that the group was concerned about issues related to independence, communication capacity, social life, and death. The environment and intimacy were shown as highlights for this group. CONCLUSIONS: It was verified in this group of elderly people that the best quality of life performance was obtained in the Environment and Social Relations domains and in the Intimacy and Past, Present and Future aspects. In addition, sociodemographic, morbidity and health service use variables significantly affected this construct. The characteristics of the research group do not allow us to generalize the findings, but it is hoped to have contributed with the look on a group as diverse as the Brazilian elderly.","PeriodicalId":338961,"journal":{"name":"PAJAR - Pan-American Journal of Aging Research","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129960290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
