However, the magnitude of the association is affected by several potential factors, and the specifics of the relationship are not yet fully understood. Therefore, this study attempted to examine the correlations between various physical fitness types and cognitive performance, by considering as two potential factors. One hundred sixty-three male college students were recruited for this study. Physical fitness of participants, including cardiovascular fitness, muscular power, flexibility, muscle endurance and body mass index were measured. Cognitive performance was measured via the Stroop test that assessed basic information processing and inhibition aspect of executive function. The results indicated that cardiovascular fitness was positively associated with the task conditions reflected in executive functions. Muscle power was positively associated with all conditions related to Stroop test. Moreover, muscle endurance and flexibility was positively correlated to executive function and non-executive functions, respectively, whereas none of these relationships was observed with body mass index and the Stroop test performance. The present study suggested that specific physical fitness indices might exhibit selective beneficial effects on cognitive function, which was in line with previously proposed selective improvement hypothesis. Our study further extended the hypothesis to other type of physical fitness. Finally, several potential underlying mechanisms, with respective of neuroelectrical, brain function, and psychological aspects were provided for future research.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123925329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seven healthy male volunteers (age, 19.6 ± 1.0 yr; height, 170.1 ± 2.8 cm; weight, 65.5 ± 2.3 kg) with regular exercise activities were participated in this study. All subjects were undertaken three different treatment trials. In the first trial, subjects received 5 mg Pred with 400 mg maltodextrin, and then urine Pred concentration was estimated during 24 hours (PredC). In the second and third trials, subjects were assigned into either placebo (400 mg maltodextrin) with exercise (PLE) or Pred (5 mg plus 400 mg maltodextrin) with exercise (PredE) trials. A 70% VO2max endurance exercise test to exhaustion was performed immediately after supplementation. Respiratory related markers, blood sample and 24 hours urine prednisolone concentrations were measured. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the urinary Pred concentration between PredC and PredE trials during 24 hours. The urinary Pred concentration in PredC trial at 12 hours was below 30 ng/ml, while, it was above 30 ng/ml in PredE trial at the same time point. No significant differences in respiratory related markers, rate of energy utilization and exercise time to exhaustion were observed between PLE and PredE trials. The concentration of blood free fatty acid at 15 min during exercise was significantly lower in PLE than PredE trial. The blood glucose level in PLE was significantly lower than PredE trial at 45 min and 60 min during exercise, and also immediately after exercise. The main finding of this study was that sub-maximal exercise may not accelerate urinary elimination rate of Pred, and may cause positive test result after 12 hours in young men. Besides, ingestion of low-dose Pred could not increase the time to exhaustion during the sub-maximal exercise test.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128435778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Early childhood is a critical period for developing the fundamental movement skills. However, most of research studies were focused on children aged above 6 years, and there is a dearth of knowledge among children aged between 3 and years. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the development of fundamental movement skills in preschool children. In this study, test method was conducted to investigate the fundamental movement skills of children ages 3-5 years. One hundred thirty-six boys and 131 girls (mean age = 4.4 years) from 4 different preschools of Chiayi City were participated in this study. Results showed that the locomotor skills were superior to object control skills among participants. The fundamental movement skills performed better with age. No significant differences between boys and girls in locomotor skills. However, boys were better than girls in object control skills, especially, in stationary dribbling skills. Furthermore, participants classified as normal-weight had better performance in object control skills than their under-weight peers. Scores for striking a stationary ball and overhand throw were significantly better in normal-weight and overweight or obese children when compared with their under-weight counterparts. Scores for gallop and horizontal jump skills were significantly higher in normalweight children compared with their overweight or obese counterparts. Interestingly, scores for horizontal jump skill were significantly better in under-weight children as compared with their overweight or obese children. It was concluded that the gender, age, and BMI of preschool children would affect their development of fundamental movement skills.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124484060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major reason is that the number of Taiwanese players in MLB has been increased due to their outstanding performance. In addition, the innovations in the professional sport industry and sports broadcasting may influences the value cognition of the college students in their sport-watching, and may eventually affect behaviour model in sports watching. This trend becomes a very important factor for sports organizations to analyze the current sports market situation. Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (Aizen, 1991), this study conducted a survey on a group of college students, who watched the games of Wei-Yin Chen, a Taiwanese MLB player, to understand the behaviour model of Taiwanese college students in their watching professional baseball games. The results from 443 valid samples showed that all independent variables, including attitude, subjective and norm perceived behavioral control showed significant effects on behavior intention. In conclusion, an additional confidence interval method was applied to verify whether a mediating effect existed between perceived behavioral control and behavior intention in this study, and a positive result was confirmed. Some research suggestions were raised for related sports organizations and future studies may necessary.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"887 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130711772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to identify some manageable setting attributes that are valued by repeated visitors, and to understand how setting attribute preferences can influence the visitors' emotional and functional place attachment toward specific locations. This study utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The first phase was qualitative interviews, and identified the unique setting attributes of the Taroko National Park visitors. Based on the identified setting attributes, the second phase was to design the questionnaire for quantitative enquiry according to Cole and Hall's (2009) research design in a high density use setting. The results of structural equation modeling indicated that the model fits well with the data. Resource attributes positively affected the place dependence and place identity. Our results concluded that visitors' place identity and dependence toward the park could be enhanced by improving the resource setting attributes, such as travel information, local delicacy, video facilities and recreational facilities. Diversity and richness of the travel information may also increase visitors' understanding of the local culture and nature. Furthermore, the well-maintained park facilities and the uniqueness settings will also increases visitors' use frequency, and enhance visitors' dependency toward the setting attributes of the park, and ultimately increase their quality of leisure.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116876951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the role of physical activity duration in the prevention of stroke still needs further investigations. This study aimed to examine the association between leisure-time physical activity and incidence of stroke in middle aged (50-64 years) and older (65 years and over) Taiwanese. The analyses were done based on the national representative data from the Taiwan's Health and Living Status of the Elderly Survey conducted in 2003 and 2007. Subjects with previous stroke history were excluded from the study. The data from the cohort of 5,046 participants aged 50 years and above in 2003 were analyzed and followed-up for 4 years. The participants reported their frequency and duration of physical activity at baseline according to four categories of activity status: none, light, medium and high physical activity. Multivariate logistic regression models were conducted to assess the associations between dose-response of physical activity and stroke incidence. The results indicated that participants engaging in high level of physical activity had significant lower risk of stroke incidence compared with those, who reported no physical activity. A similar result was observed in older subjects aged 65 or above. In contrast, these beneficial associations were attenuated in middle aged adults. In conclusion, our study showed a tendency that high level of leisure-time physical activity was associated with lower risk of stroke. Precisely, the decreased risk of stroke incidence was observed among participants, who involved in 30-minute physical activity, at least three times per a week.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114854448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We further examined the interaction of sports goal orientation and academic self-efficacy on sports self-handicapping, and demonstrated the interaction of academic goal orientation and sports self-efficacy on academic self-handicapping. Data were collected with one week separation in academic and sports disciplines from 3 diverse samples of university students, who were major in PE (N = 354). Results revealed that the interaction of task-orientation and self-efficacy was significantly predicted the self-handicapping, which was observed in both academic and sports. The interaction of sport ego-orientation and academic self-efficacy significantly predicted the sport self-handicapping. Three conclusions from this study were as follows; first, goal orientation, self-efficacy, and self-handicapping were useful to understand the PE students' learning motivation and attitude in both sports and academic fields. Second, the learning self-efficacy could be generalized, and decrease self-handicapping for sports and academic disciplines. Third, academic self-efficacy was interactive with sports ego-orientation, which maybe probable in self-regulation pitfalls, and needed more reasons to explain his/her failure in sports.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132480307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eleven male subjects following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (aged 25.5 ± 2.9 years) were participated in this study. The study intervention was the knee taping, including no taping, rotary taping, collateral ligament taping and combined taping. The outcome measures were the anterior tibial translations measured by KT-2000 arthrometer and the knee joint angles measured by Vicon motion analysis system. One-way analysis of variance with repeated measures was used to compare the kinematic differences among different taping conditions. The results showed that taping could reduce the anterior tibial translation. Compared to other tapings, combined taping had the greatest effect in limiting the anterior tibial translation. Taping could improve the knee joint stability by decreasing the anterior tibial translation. Furthermore, taping could decrease the internal rotation angles and increase the external rotation angles during pivoting movements. Our findings suggested that taping could be beneficial to subjects with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, when they were performing the high-impact sports in concurrence with pivoting movement. Taping could enhance the knee joint stability and reduce the risk of re-injury.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133458249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One hundred and twenty-six games from the seasons of 2006 to 2012 held between New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox teams were involved in this study, and 60 variables were collected to analyze. Meanwhile, the winner predictive model was applied to the season of 2013 games to verify the model accuracy by virtual bets. In addition to ANNs, logistic regression was also used to develop the winner predictive model to discuss the differences, and to explore the advantages and disadvantages between these two tools. The results showed that ANNs-based predictive model had 72.22% of winning accuracy. Moreover, for the season of 2013 games between Yankees and Red Sox teams were used by way of virtual bets to test the model's accuracy, and the results showed 73.68% of accuracy. Because of combined many areas, such as sports, sports industry, management and quantitative methods, and also equipped the ability of data mining, our findings provided an accurate, simple and reasonable way to predict the winning team for bettors. Therefore, the use of ANNs model was recommended as a suitable tool to predict the winning team.","PeriodicalId":338279,"journal":{"name":"Sports & Exercise Research","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115174836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
