The study considers the relevance of tourism-induced gentrification in urban Africa and its possible consequences for tourism development and neighbourhood change in urban areas. According to the authors, tourism-induced gentrification occurs in a small number of African urban areas and is characterised by exclusionary practices that are similar to those that can often be observed in cities of the global North. A number of research avenues are proposed that consider the role of tourism-based development in urban Africa.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136253353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scholarship on business tourism in the Global South, however, remains underdeveloped despite its significance for many leading urban tourism destinations. Arguably, the need for the growth of research on business tourism is particularly acute in major cities of sub-Saharan Africa where the sector is frequently of more significance than leisure tourism. This article contributes to addressing the knowledge gap on business tourism in urban Africa with its focus on MICE tourism in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city. Use is made of a set of qualitative interviews which were conducted with stakeholder representatives for all hotels in Harare that have facilities to accommodate business events. Under scrutiny are the competitiveness of the city’s business tourism economy, the nature of business events in the city, and local pro-poor impacts.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134903417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is redefining the known ones and reaching for new ones, which are often located right on geographical peripheries. While it may seem that only space travel remains a challenge for tourism today, terrestrial environments of the deep ocean and deep caves are still beyond the reach of not only mass tourism, but tourism in general. The goal of the article is to identify objective and subjective, stable or variable, external and internal conditions that explain why the deep ocean and caves represent the ultimate frontiers for tourism. The author questions to what extent this situation will continue in the future and discusses the attractiveness and development prospects of various niche forms of tourism based on the features of the underworld and deep waters which, at first sight, constitute barriers or threats to most tourism activities.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136308618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is based on qualitative data collected during five interviews with uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park’s (UDP) community liaison officers and traditional leaders of the communities surrounding the UDP. The results reveal disjointed coordination between the conservation authority and the surrounding communities regarding development. Problems include funding constraints, extreme poverty levels, poor communication, and communities’ overreliance on the UDP for material benefits. The authors provide recommendations on how to promote community-based tourism that relies on sustainability practices and argue that development activities cannot be effective without close cooperation between conservation authorities and communities.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135785090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Protected areas and conservancies in Zimbabwe have resulted in some local communities having negative attitudes towards conservation efforts and the enforcement of conservation-related regulations resulting in conflicts. This paper explores the role and value of CBT in tourism and recreation in protected areas in Zimbabwe in terms of the local participation of communities. This study sought to understand the management system and the perceptions of different stakeholders on community conservancies in Zimbabwe. Consequently, a qualitative methodology using a case study approach was used, using in-depth interviews with key informants. This paper brought insights into the current management system of CBTEs and the perceived challenges of the management system. There is over-dependence on private safari operators, which is affecting the growth and further development of CBTEs. CBT initiatives are for the community and should be managed and run by the communities.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43584910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Premised on the importance of protected areas as a strategy for the conservation of the natural environment, the study seeks to unpack the nature, breadth and trends that predominate contemporary scholarly discourse on the concept of heritage interpretation in protected areas. Based on an in-depth exploration of notable scientific databases (Sabinet, Scopus, Emerald, ProQuest, Taylor & Francis Online, and journals’ websites) 129 scholarly publications were extracted and screened, with 57 publications meeting the ‘relevance’ criteria. The data analysis followed a characterisation, content analysis and thematic extraction. Key outcomes highlighted most of the studies emanating from the Global North, with themes reflecting the role of interpretation in protected areas, interpretation planning, management and evaluation, environmental interpretation, cultural interpretation, the influence of interpretation on visitors’ perceptions, behaviour and satisfaction, interpretation preferences, interpreters’ experiences, creativity in heritage interpretation and heritage interpretation for sustainable development. Based on the findings of a mixed research design involving 13 face-to-face interviews with tourism marketers as well as 401 surveys of domestic tourists, understanding tourism marketers’ digital marketing preferences, digital marketing platforms influencing travel decisions and factors motivating the use of digital platforms is crucial in developing sustainable digital marketing strategies. Digital marketing has the resilience to influence tourists’ decisions to engage in domestic tourism. Stakeholders must constantly adapt their digital marketing strategies to stay abreast of the changing trends in technology adoption. It is paramount that tourism destinations spearhead their tourism recovery strategies for increased competitiveness, sustainability and long-term recovery. As digital marketing becomes more sustainable for changing consumer behaviour, future studies can focus on artificial intelligence tools and consumer behaviour in tourism.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46475198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

South Africa is a major focus for route tourism planning which is part of broader place-based development initiatives. This paper examines the perceptions of key route tourism stakeholders concerning the planning, local impacts and challenges of the Panorama Route which is located in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. The findings are analysed from 63 qualitative interviews undertaken in 2022 concerning stakeholder perceptions about the planning, workings and impacts of this major route tourism initiative. Stakeholders include government and private sector formal as well as informal businesses. Differences as well as common themes were observed across these stakeholder groups. On many issues government (both provincial and local) was viewed as the ‘problem’ rather than the provider of solutions. Major criticism was pointed at inadequacies of service provision – especially water and electricity – and the poor state of road maintenance. The uneven geographical impacts of the Panorama Route were highlighted. Stakeholder perception research discloses the complexities of route tourism planning.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48710099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A significant gap exists regarding literature on the management of online reviews at accommodation establishments in Cape Town. The aim of the study was to understand how hotels manage their online reputation when responding to online platforms visitor reviews, focusing on guests’ online reviews (OLR) and how hotels respond and use ORM systems to manage these reviews. This exploratory research employed a qualitative methodology, whereby seven 4-star rated accommodation establishments, within the Cape Metropole were sampled. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews, and online interviews and electronic mail were also accepted due to Covid-19 restrictions. The study presents the following assumptions drawn from existing research: (1) hotels are equipped to respond to online reviews during a pandemic, and (2) hotel management perceives negative and positive reviews to be impactful. The results reveal that hotels are aware of how negative and positive ORLs impact the brand of the establishment, and how ORM systems are used to monitor and maintain their reputation online. A contribution of the study was the adoption of positive response actions to an existing review response framework.","PeriodicalId":33810,"journal":{"name":"Studia Periegetica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42625521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
