Case description: A 38-year-old woman who had no underlying medical issues arrived at CRU Goa's general medicine OPD complaining of constipation. Investigations: Thyroid profile, electrolyte balance, lipid profile, cortisol level, CBC, LFT, KFT, RBS, and HbA1c were all normal, confirming unexplained constipation. Treatment: The patient received Qur Mulayyin, Itrifal Zamani, and Safuf-i-Hazim, a formulation of Unani compounds. Itrifal Zamani 10g morning and night, Qurs Mulayyin 2 tablets at night, and Safuf-i-Hazim 7g before bed with lukewarm water for a week. As a result of the compound formulation's laxative and purgative qualities, which improved intestinal motility and promoted the formation of bulk stools, the patient reported relief from constipation during treatment.","PeriodicalId":338045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Unani and Integrative Medicine","volume":"9 2","pages":"27-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.unanijournal.com/articles/337/9-2-2-564.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147894280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unani system of medicine (USM) is one of such vital element of TM with established age-long therapeutic values. Cucumis sativus Linn. (Family: Cucurbitaceae) commonly called as cucumber, Kheera or Khayarain in Unani. It is widely cultivated as a vegetable crop in India due to its nutritional as well as therapeutic value. Its seed pulp known as Maghz e tukhme khayarain are reported to possess wide therapeutic value as astringent, diuretic, coolent, analgesic, detergent, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, deobstruent, laxative, calorific, blood purifier. It has been used in health ailments like to quench thirst, urolithiasis, correct imbalanced humors, sanguinous inflammation, remove obstructions, cystitis, diabetes, bronchitis, diarrhoea and renal diseases, bilious diseases ( Musakkin safra - coolent property) and in sanguinous diseases (as Musakkine hiddat e dam ). This wide therapeutic value is due to the secondary metabolites and phyto-constituents, which acts synergistically when used as whole. It contains cucurbitacin A, B, C and D, ascorbic acid, lactic acid, flavanoid-fisetin, lariciresinol, secoisolariciresinol, pinoresinol, saponin, hypo-xanthine and potassium. The classical literary evidence has also been confirmed by scientific studies to possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, diuretic, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, anti-carcinogenic, and wound healing activities. This study is aimed to provide a brief review of Cucumis sativus Linn. as mentioned in Unani ethno-botanical text and provide the pharmacological updates. It can be used for further scientific revalidation of the drug where it can be used efficiently for the mankind.","PeriodicalId":338045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Unani and Integrative Medicine","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125063010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its etiology has not been fully known yet; however, basal ganglion and dopamine receptors are mainly affected. There is no description of this disease in Unani books, but when we look at the Unani literature, there is vast description about the “ Rashsa” i.e. “tremors”. As tremor is the important clinical entity of Parkinson’s disease, the Parkinson’s tremors can be well visualized under the context of “ Rasha ”, as described by these physicians. “ Rasha ” mainly caused by sue-mijaz barid of Aasab (cold imbalance temperament of nerves), dryness of nerves and muscles, and unnecessary accumulation of abnormal phlegm in nerves. Unani physicians therefore advocated that it treatment should start with removal of balgham-e-ghaleez and appropriate dose of Munzij (coction) and Mushil therapy (purgative ) . Later har mizaj drugs (hot temperament) along with specific dugs like Hilteet (Ferula foetida ), Ashwagandha ( Withania somnifera ), Jund badaster Castorium), Fil-fil siyah ( Piper nigrum ), Amla Khushk ( Embilica officinalis ), Post-e-Halela Zard ( Terminalia chebula ), Tukhm-e-Khaskhaash ( Papaver somniferum ), Kishneez (Coriandrum sativum), Maghz-e-Badaam Sheerin (Amygddalus communis Linn.), Tukhm-e-Konch (Mucuna pruriens) are advocated. Our aim is to illustrate the concept and methods of treating Parkinsonism mentioned by Unani Physicians, with the aim of providing economical, readily available and relatively safe drugs and popularizing Unani herbs among people. In light of the above discussion, we can conclude that the spreading of facts about the extensive and competent Unani herbs and general treatment principles applied by Unani physicians will be really efficient in its treatment.","PeriodicalId":338045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Unani and Integrative Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127773238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herbal medicine is a practice that includes herbs, herbal material, and preparations that contain parts of plants or combinations thereof as active ingredients. These herbs are derived from plant parts such as leaves, bark, flowers, roots, fruits, and seeds. The importance of plants is well known to us. The plant kingdom is a treasure house of potential drugs and in the recent years there has been an increasing awareness about the importance of medicinal plants. Drugs from the plants are easily available, less expensive, safe, and efficient and rarely have side effects. The plants which have been selected for medicinal use over thousands of years constitute the most obvious choice of examining the current search for therapeutically effective new drugs such as anticancer drugs, antimicrobial drugs, antihepatotoxic compounds. According to World Health Organization (WHO), Medicinal plants would be the best source to obtain variety of drugs. About 80% of individuals from developed countries use traditional medicines, which have compounds derived from medicinal plants. The various phytochemicals found in sweet flag, Unani medicine such as Tannins, Saponins, Flavonoids, diterpenes and minerals such as Carbonate, Nitrate, Phosphate, Ammonium listed in table1, 2 and 3.
