This article aims to describe the cultural conflicts occurred by Maghreb immigrants in Paris, especially female immigrants who have various conflicts, due to the difference perception of women both in Maghreb and in France. As a qualitative research, this research instrument is the researchers themselves with data from the novel Les Yeux Baissés by Tahar Ben Jelloun, a Maghreb author living in Paris. The data were then analyzed using the Semiotic theory of Roland Barthes: the novel is considered as a sign to be interpreted. The results of the study indicate that the cause of the conflicts is the differences in tradition, race, and religion. These differences make them feel “unaccepted” in France. Therefore, Moslem women in Paris have two types of cultural identities: Identity of being (the mother of Fathma, the main character) and Identity of becoming (Fathma, the main character). Besides, these Maghebian immigrants belong to the diaspora’s group: First, the Essentialists, diaspora who closed themselves off, just carried on their traditions, culture and religion as they did back home. Second, whom adopt the French culture, religion, and way of life. Third, those with 'floating' traits: born in France, do not know the cultural traditions of their hometown, only know French culture which “does not accept them”. Therefore it can be said that the ‘floating’ generation needs a 'special place' that is neither the culture of their parents, nor the culture of France, and that third place can be called a 'place of transit'.Keywords: Maghreb Diaspora, Moslem Women, Cultural Conflict, Place of Transit","PeriodicalId":33786,"journal":{"name":"Eralingua Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42890664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pronunciation can be considered as one of the most difficult aspects to acquire in second language acquisition. Analyzing pronunciation errors may provide teachers and researchers on the best approaches to teach pronunciation. In addition, it has been suggested that students who are interested in correcting their pronunciation errors can be more motivated to acquire the target language. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the relationship between pronunciation errors of voiceless θ words and students’ motivation. The present study applied a descriptive qualitative approach by interviewing 15 students from a senior high school in Bekasi, Indonesia. The results of present study suggest that the majority of the respondents found it difficult to pronounce voiceless θ words. However, their difficulties to pronounce voiceless θ words might not correlate with their motivation to learn English as the majority of the respondents are motivated to learn English despite finding difficulties to pronounce voiceless θ words. Furthermore, the majority of the participants are motivated to improve their pronunciation due to extrinsic factors. Gamification, or the use of game attributes outside of a game context to affect learning-related behaviors or attitudes, is seen as an innovative way to support the diverse needs of students with learning or behavioral challenges. One digital educational game that is gaining popularity is Quizizz, a game-based online test that enables entertaining multiplayer teaching activities and allows learners to practice with their devices. This study aimed to examine students' perceptions of the use of Quizizz as a formative test tool in German classrooms at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The participants of this study were first-year students studying German who were given a formative test using Quizizz for one semester. A descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study, in which data were collected from questionnaires to gain insight into how Quizizz affected the aspects of enjoyment, motivation, engagement, and satisfaction. The results showed that all aspects asked in the questionnaire received a strong positive response, indicating that students have a very good perception of Quizizz in the classroom. The positive response to the use of Quizizz in German language learning suggests that it could be used more widely as a formative assessment tool in language learning. The findings suggest that gamification can be an effective way to engage students and motivate them to learn. As a result, educators may want to consider using other gamified tools and techniques in the classroom to create a more enjoyable and engaging learning experience.Keywords: Gamification, German Classroom, Quizizz, Students' Perception","PeriodicalId":33786,"journal":{"name":"Eralingua Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46439033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This descriptive qualitative research examines the distribution of translation studies of Sinta-indexed journals (S1 and S2) through a dataset of 19 journals and 60 articles. The objective of this article is to offer a clear depiction of the current direction that research is taking within the field of translation. The empirical results derived from the study demonstrate a discernibly higher frequency of S2 journals in comparison to their S1 counterparts. This observed disparity can reasonably be attributed to the divergent criteria employed in the classification of these journals as well as the ongoing progress and expansion of the journal landscape. S1 journals exhibit a greater inclination toward prioritizing applied translation studies, whereas both categories demonstrate a prevailing prevalence of research centered around pure translation, thereby suggesting a possible imperative to advance the deployment of research with applied orientations. The results of this study demonstrate a prevalence of the qualitative methodology in translation studies across both S1 and S2 journals. Quantitative research is notably infrequent, constituting a minority fraction of the publications, whereas mixed-method approaches are also limited but present to some extent. Collaborative efforts are observed in S1 publications, with larger-scale projects, whereas S2 publications involve smaller, collaborative teams. Foreign researchers contribute more to S1, while S2 showcases predominantly Indonesian authors, but both display international collaboration. Thus, encouraging more applied translation research and industry collaboration can enhance the practical impact of translation studies. The above findings are significant not only for scholars engaged in translation studies but also for journal editors when making editorial judgments.Keywords: Translation Studies, Research Orientation,  Sinta 1, Sinta 2","PeriodicalId":33786,"journal":{"name":"Eralingua Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43692802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to uncover the utilization of positive discourse in presidential rhetoric during the G20 Summit 2022. This qualitative study employs a dataset of speeches delivered by the President of Indonesia, obtained from the official website of The Secretary of the Cabinet of the Republic of Indonesia. The speeches were published online between November 14 and 16, 2022. The procedures involve examining the speeches, identifying positive language, categorizing the data into three main themes (i.e., uniting, being optimistic, and maintaining world peace), analyzing rhetorical strategies and interpreting the data using the Positive Discourse Analysis approach. The results show that the President of Indonesia encourages all countries to unite to achieve common goals. Despite a severe toll on the world economy after the pandemic, he spreads optimism to the summit. He also persuades everyone to maintain world peace. These three focal points are conveyed by utilizing personal pronouns ‘we’ to strengthen the sense of collectivity and build unity and ‘I’ to highlight his good leadership quality. Justification for the negative impacts of war is expressed through conditional clauses. Other discursive strategies in his rhetoric include using lexical choices, parallel structures, modals, metaphors, rhetorical questions, and repetitive phrases. The encouragement and uplifting messages in the speeches may boost positive vibes in the meeting. The use of rhetorical techniques can impact international relations, economic cooperation, and how people worldwide work together to address common issues.Keywords: Positive Discourse Analysis, president, indonesia, G20, summit","PeriodicalId":33786,"journal":{"name":"Eralingua Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43357347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gender issues have remained a hot issue owing to various influencing factors, including gender overlap and social inequality. Gender is a social sex reconstructed by society for both men and women. The gender difference stereotypes have given rise to gender injustice detrimental to women. The presence of the concept of existential feminism initiated by Simone De Beauvoir is a bright spot and hope for all women, especially those in patriarchal system communities. The purpose of this research is to uncover the traditional paradigm that women are cultural products and their independence is delimited. This is not in accordance with the concept of human rights which basically states that every human being has the same rights in carrying out life. So it is hoped that this paper can be used as a reference to eliminate the marginalization of women. The research is carried out using a qualitative descriptive design with phenomenological method to explore or photograph social situations thoroughly, broadly and deeply and also supported by the theory of sociology of literature, the description of social reality in literary works. The data collection procedures and the data analysis are done systematically based on the existing theories of qualitative research method. The results of the research show that the protagonist implements the existential feminist concept through the ability to work, being intellectual and responsible.  Throughout the research it is proved that existential feminism still exists to explore the marginalization of woman, summed up with a text that women are independent beings. Keywords: Existential Feminism, Intellect, Profession, Responsibility","PeriodicalId":33786,"journal":{"name":"Eralingua Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43081562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fillmore is modern linguistic figure who pioneered the emergence of case grammar theory. He stated that case grammar is a new version of the theory modified from the old theory, namely generative transformation grammar. He developed case grammar after seeing a problem with the grammar of generative transformations. Thus, he declared that case grammar consists of two basic components: modality and proposition. In a line with this background, the purposes of this study are: (1) to reveal the modality in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore; (2) to reveal the preposition in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore. The type of this study is qualitative descriptive study. Data is in the form of conversation in the film. Thus, the data were taken through watching, listening, and note-taking techniques. The data was analyzed by using three steps. They are data reduction: researchers classified data based on elements of case grammar theory including modalities and propositions, data presentation: researchers displayed data in the form of the table in accordance of modalities and propositions, and interpreted data based on case grammar theory, and conclusion: researchers conducted data induction from interpretation results and ensured that the interpretation results fulfilled the elements of case grammar theory. The results show that the modality in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore consists of three modalities. They are tense modality, adverb modality, and negation modality. At the same time, the proposition consists of ten types. They are agentive case (A), experiential case (E), instrument case (I), objective case (O), source case (S), goal case (G), locative case (L), time case (T), companion case (CMP), and benefactive case (B). The results of this study strengthen Fillmore’s theory which states that as a part of sentence structures, modalities and propositions have types and forms and in the context of English film dialogue, the emergence of modalities and propositions is influenced by sentence structure used by the speaker in conveying his meaning.Keywords: Case Grammar, Film, Modality, Proposition","PeriodicalId":33786,"journal":{"name":"Eralingua Jurnal Pendidikan Bahasa Asing dan Sastra","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48984343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The qualitative method was applied to accomplish those study objectives. The data were high-profile figures’ utterances collected from covid-19 related news on an online news site (https://www.merdeka.com/).  This research focuses on the expressive speech acts since they are also known as evaluative speech acts. Moreover, analyzing expressive speech acts uttered by public figures in covid-19 related news may give insight on how the Indonesia’s government manage covid-19 cases. The results confirm that the utterances taken from that site fulfilled some types of expressive speech act, namely praising, thanking, deploring, lamenting, congratulating, and flattering. The intended meaning of those types of expressive speech act are determined by interpreting the speakers’ intention based on the context. Furthermore, the felicity condition of each expressive speech act type is discovered by conducting four formulas, which are preparatory condition, propositional content, sincerity condition, and essential condition.
