We evaluate the accuracy of aggregate representations of small-scale units as seen from the transmission network. The comparison focuses on the behavior of the tripping logic according to the ride-through characteristics. The simulations take into account the response of old and newer inverters during large disturbances in the bulk power system. The paper demonstrates that an aggregate model may fail to represent the response of hundreds or thousands of small-scale units. Do Nascimento","doi":"10.1109/urucon53396.2021.9647132","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/urucon53396.2021.9647132","url":null,"abstract":"In this work, it is presented an algorithm based on the directional gradient method for distinguishing source surge current, or inrush currents, from transitory fault currents in transformers. Methods and simulation are introduced and the effectiveness of the gradient method is investigated for situations that can lead to a false operational of the protection systems. Three special cases, composed of a combination of external faults with magnetizing inrush current for a $Delta -Delta$, 138/13.8 kV - 30 kVA power transformer are studied. The power system transformer is modeled in the software ATP-Draw by the component SATTRAFO. The results indicate that the gradient method is effective for detecting and distinguishing inrush from fault currents when the angle of the gradient of the primary current together with its amplitude is appropriately used as boundary conditions. Currently, in usual engineering practice and teaching, this branch is composed of a resistance and a reactance connected in a parallel arrangement. However, a series arrangement was once used by some authors for the same branch, naturally using different resistance and reactance values. Besides, a fairly recent teaching reference has been found to refer indirectly to such series arrangement, and it has also been frequently noted that several Electric Machinery students tend to erroneously adopt a series arrangement view for this branch. Although the parallel arrangement is far more common in the literature, it seems that its practical advantages should be more explicitly detailed. Similarly, as in a communication system, a channel coding is used to improve the performance of the audio watermarking system. Our goal here is to explore the performance using convolutional coding in a Spread Spectrum-based audio watermarking system to get the boundaries and the best configuration in the system. To this end, data payload, imperceptibility, and robustness are tested. Usually the number of bits used for quantization, improves the performance. However, we demonstrated here that the increasing number of bits more than 8 will not affect the performance. The main focus was the simulations-based analysis of the hydraulics of the system and the real time linking with the controller. The purpose was to test different sets of routines and parameters prior to the start up of the real system running in the 800xA DCS (Distributed Control System) platform from ABB. The simulation was programmed in the Matlab-Simulink environment, in order to analyze the behavior of the plant against different input flows and variations on it's internal parameters. It is based on Stochastic Dynamic Programming technique and allows to simulate the contribution of several energy sources, such as hydro-electric, solar, thermal or wind energy, to a specific electrical network. Uruguay's electric generation system has considerably grown and diversified in the past decades. This evolution implies potentially more complex scenarios and also motivates a more precise modeling of some electric sources. Therefore, the computational cost of the simulations is also expected to rise and the use of HPC techniques becomes mandatory. In this work we study the performance bottlenecks in the SimSEE tool.
