Fair enough. But given the differences in breadth of definition, it is crucial, to avoid mischief, to know whose definitions are being used. In places, it is unclear whether the author is using his own definitions or those of others whose work he is discussing. In rejecting theories that argue synesthesia is verbally based, Cytowic incorrectly refers to theoretical statements (including some of my own) that distinctly deny that synesthesia (according to Cytowic's definition) is mediated by language. Consistently and repeatedly over the past 15 years, I have argued that synesthesia is fundamentally grounded in sensory/perceptual processing, and not in language, and, further, that cross-modal associations in non-synesthetes and cross-modal metaphors in language themselves derive in part from some of the same sensory processes that underlie synesthesia. Cytowic's neurological hypothesis and general perspective are closer in spirit to other previous statements than he recognizes. Possibly Cytowic identifies meaning with language, and improperly extrapolates that identification to the works of others. Perception is cognition, and perceptions without language can have meanings. Whatever the underlying basis of his misconstructions, Cytowic's discussion of the relation bet~veen language and synesthesia proves the weakest and most uneven chapter in the book. For all its encouragement of the study of higher-level processes within neurology, the book could benefit from a sharper analysis of those processes, and in particular of the relations among perception, cognition, meaning and language. Other inaccuracies in the book include some whose relevance to the main issues is less direct; for example, readers may be surprised to read that Impressionism was a movement of the early 1900s. Also, recent evidence shows that the genetically based sensory ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) does correlate with responsiveness to bitter non-carbamides. The book paints a broad canvas, concerning itself widely with the mind, behavior, and brains of synesthetes. It deals not only with the physiological and radiological measurements of brain processes in synesthesia, but also with the subjective experiences that synesthetes report, and with the relation of synesthesia to personality and to the arts. Despite the caveats discussed above, the interested reader will find much in this work that is stimulating and informative.","PeriodicalId":337155,"journal":{"name":"Cybernetics and Applied Systems","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124484912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
