Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) has been considered for depressurization while keeping off-site doses low or within prescribed limits. Various types of FCVS have been installed on many nuclear power plants world-wide. In case of a nuclear meltdown accident followed by an over-pressurization that may require venting, the mixture of steam and non-condensable gases containing iodine is passed through the FCVS. Radioactive iodine in various organic and inorganic forms is scrubbed in a specific scrubbing solution while the cleaned steam-gas mixture can then be discharged into the environment. Among the spectrum of fission nuclides generated as a result of fission, iodine with its nine oxidation stages is perhaps the most reactive fission product generated and released into the primary coolant system during the event of severe NPP accidents. Because of fuel degradation and melting, a huge inventory of iodine is volatilized. Understanding of iodine behavior in environment similar to that of containment is necessary prerequisite for planning effective mitigation system for efficient retention of iodine within containment boundary. The prevailing conditions i.e. iodine concentration, pH, temperature and dose rate will govern the iodine behavior in the sump water as well as in the containment. Development of an efficient, fast and reliable mechanism to retain volatile iodine species in a containment of a nuclear reactor during a severe accident has been an active area of research in the recent years. The need for such research is greatly enhanced in Post Fukushima nuclear era. This paper reviews the available FCVS options and specifically outlines the related research and development activities being carried out at Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS).","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125759478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, Malaysian National Renewable Energy Policy and Action Plan is introduced in 2010 to increase the use of renewable energy due to the growing concerns about the pollution from energy sources that come from fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas. In this paper, our focus is more on mini hydropower since it is the most cost effective energy technologies to be developed for rural area. Mini hydropower depends a lot on weather conditions, such as rainfall, temperature, humidity and others besides the system itself. To study how these factors affecting the power generation by mini hydro power plant in east coast region, data sets are collected from Meteorological Department Malaysia from January 2010 until December 2015. A statistical analysis is conducted to see the correlation of these factors with the power generation by mini hydro power. From the analysis, it can be concluded that humidity and rainfall have significant effect on power generation by mini hydro. These two variables can be used to predict energy production by mini hydro power. For future research, machine learning method such as support vector machine, artificial neural network and others can be used to predict the energy production by mini hydro power plant.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"187 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115180726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Structures with different cross section airfoils, different chord lengths and manufactured with composite materials are difficult to model. Moreover, modeling should be such that it can address requirements from aerodynamic as well structural perspective. Complexity is further added when failure analyses are also required. Ideal modeling tool is therefore should be capable of addressing all above requirements along with ease of modeling in less time. NuMAD (Numerical Manufacturing And Design) developed by Sandia National Laboratories offers all such capabilities. In the present work, NPS-100 wind turbine blade has been used as test case to demonstrate and share the capabilities of the package. NuMAD generated input files for ANSYS which is then used to perform modal analysis in wind off and wind on conditions with cantilevered boundary condition. In wind off condition, modes were extracted without the application of any force and in un-deformed state. Results were in good agreement with those of published data. In wind on condition, axial load was applied with pre-stress option on, followed by nonlinear modal analysis. Results indicated a progressive increase in frequencies with the increase of axial load. This is because of stress stiffening effect. Similarly bucking analysis and other FEM based analyses may be performed with the modeling procedures adopted in this work for the current geometry or for any other geometry of interest.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115747103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over-pressurization caused by decay heat generation in a core melt accident might damage the reactor containment. Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) is being introduced which meets the main requirements of limiting the excessive pressure buildup in the containment, maintaining the structural integrity of the containment and retaining the activity present in gas that is vented into the atmosphere. The iodine laden containment air is vented through the scrubber, where it is treated with caustic soda and other additives. The vented air is bubbled through the solution and the reaction of the iodine and the solution takes place on the bubble surface. For having larger decontamination factors, bubble dynamics is extremely important in scrubber type FCVS design. The present study includes the use of video imaging to measure bubble size in a specially designed scrubbing column which is used for supporting the results obtained by using correlations developed by different researchers in their studies and hence finding the mass transfer rates. It is deduced that the transfer rate is more in case of concentrated solution and mass transfer rate increases with the increase in head of the scrubbing solution. It can be seen in all cases that the transfer rate curves converge towards equilibrium as the solution gets saturated.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124872583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to study the combustion characteristics of syngases in premixed swirl mode using a model gas turbine swirl burner. Four different types of syngases, covering low to high H2-content were tested. Experimental work was conducted to study the emission performance of lean swirl flame. Obtained results were used as validation targets for numerical simulation using flamelet generated manifold (FGM) and chemical equilibrium (CE) approaches. The former method shows better agreement with experimental result, hence FGM method was adopted to model flame structure and predict emission species in the reaction zones for different syngas types. Result shows that syngas with high concentration of H2 produces lower peak flame temperature and height. Furthermore, high H2-rich syngas also produces low level of NO species in the reaction zone.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"200 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122590404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new airfoil was derived from NACA 0021 symmetrical airfoil with a backward facing step on the suction side of the airfoil. The motivation behind the introduction of abrupt step is to trap vortex at high incidence angle similar to Kline-Fogglemann (KF) airfoil. Added advantage is the enhancement of starting torque by reverse drag by the step. The Darrieus turbine with KF-N-21 airfoil and NACA 0021 airfoil are experimentally compared in terms of static torque and power co-efficient. The KF-N-21 airfoil demonstrates higher efficiency than NACA 0021 at low Reynold's number with better starting characteristics and matched performance at higher Reynold's number. The Darrieus Turbine with KF-N-21 airfoil will be a promising candidate especially for low wind speed sites.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128318989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In pursuit of achieving optimized energy supply and demand, the deployment of smart grids is becoming a strategic act in many countries. There is a void of telecommunication and information support in smart grid. Adopting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IOT) will transform the existing grids into a smarter one. In this paper we propose a framework for smart-grid based on IOT and ICT solutions with an aim towards improving energy conservation, reducing operational cost and empowering the customer with usage analytics. A 3 tier cognitive architecture consisting of Perception layer, Attention-Memory layer and Decision layer is introduced. Various ICT and IOT solutions applicable at these 3 layers are discussed. This architecture can pave a way for future intelligent Grids there by upgrading level of urbanisation.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123344760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technology facilitates a natural gas with high methane contents storage method which may be done with simple compression. One of the porous materials that is commonly applied to adsorb methane in ANG tank is activated carbon which is a material that has large surface area because of its high porosity. Activated carbon can be produced from banana peel waste and water hyacinth because of its high carbon contents. The production of activated carbon from banana peel waste and water hyacinth is carried out by variation of two different chemical activator, ZnCl2, concentrations (0.25 N and 1 N). Activated carbon with the best characterization from each source will be adopted as adsorbents on the designed ANG tank system in order to discover their storage capacity and delivery capacity based on their adsorption isotherm properties. They are compared with the commercially available activated carbon EnerG2 which has a surface area of 1750 m2/g. The best activated carbon produced from banana peel waste and water hyacinth has a surface area of 797.04 m2/g and 540.77 m2/g, respectively. The increase of pressure in an ANG system causes an increase of storage capacity for each activated carbon where at 35 bar, EnerG2, banana peel waste, and water hyacinth activated carbons adsorb 0.454 kg/kg, 0.278 kg/kg, and 0.269 kg/kg gas, respectively.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129824903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ERF is defined as the sine of the phase difference between the Static synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) tap voltage and differential current. The STATCOM tap voltage can be estimated using local end voltage and current. The ERF is measured at both the relay ends. In the capacitive mode, if both ERFs are more than the upper threshold, the fault is external and if any ERF is less than the upper threshold, the fault is internal. In the inductive mode, if ERF is between upper and lower threshold, the fault is internal else, if the differential current is more than the modified differential current setting, the fault is internal else the fault is external. The performance of presented scheme is first investigated for various faults at various locations with EMTDC/PSCAD simulations. Then scheme is successfully validated using Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). It is found that the scheme is robust and selective for various faulty conditions.","PeriodicalId":336020,"journal":{"name":"2017 3rd International Conference on Power Generation Systems and Renewable Energy Technologies (PGSRET)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114146278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
