Inherited from the optical domain, the prime mission of radio burst switching (RBS) is to provide efficiently circuit and packet switching solutions between a high number of spot beams. Uncertain market direction and speed of adaptation will also favor such agile technologies. RBS idea intrinsically minimizes the processing section dedicated to the regeneration of header, while the bulk of traffic bursts travels transparently without on-board processing. This concept also widely simplifies the terminal characteristics. The related techniques have been studied and simulated in the frame of the ULISS project. At the horizon 2010, the on board processor feasibility will be enabled thanks to ASIC technology improvements, to integrated multi gigabit transceivers and to system on chip processing architecture","PeriodicalId":335831,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115703868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the contrary, the use of erasure coding schemes and more appropriate automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes, available within the packet layer coding-based and the consultative committee for space data systems (CCSDS) protocol architectures respectively, assure better performance results. TCP Hybla has been conceived with the primary aim to solve this problem, therefore it appears quite promising in geostationary (GEO) satellite environments, where the long propagation time greatly affects the RTT. In order to compare TCP Hybla with TCP NewReno, SACK and Westwood in the satellite environment, we have reproduced suitable scenarios based on a GEO bent-pipe satellite by means of both the ns2 simulator and a Linux-based testbed developed at University of Bologna. The obtained results show that TCP Hybla allows a better efficiency in utilizing the available satellite bandwidth, especially for high packet error rates and/or high satellite bandwidth values. In our analysis, we consider two separate fading cases. For independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) fading channels, exact closed-form expressions of the IOP are derived. For non-identically Hoyt distributed fading, we express the problem in a different equivalent form, and propose the use of the saddlepoint method to approximate the IOP. As verified by extensive computer simulations, the saddlepoint approximation method provides very accurate results, making it an approach that could potentially be applied in performance evaluation of wireless communication systems","PeriodicalId":335831,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114415599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, the time variability of the two-tier satellite network topology will be aggravated. In this paper, two novel convergent-reconstruction-based ILISL establishment strategies are proposed. The proposed strategies can reduce the number of network topology reconfigurations and improve the topological stability of the LEO/MEO two-tier satellite networks by forcing all ILISLs to reconstruct at the same time instant. Simulation results prove the validity of the proposed strategies and show that the topological stability of the two-tier LEO/MEO satellite networks can be improved with acceptable cost","PeriodicalId":335831,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127098835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A DVB-S2/RCS transparent architecture and fixed terminals using adaptive physical layer will be considered. DVB-S2 transmission power and symbol rate are assumed to be constant, and hence ACM (adaptive coding and modulation) yields a bit rate that is time and space dependant according to the channel conditions. DVB-RCS transmission power is assumed to be constant and DRA (dynamic rate adaptation) along with AC (adaptive coding) yield both bit and symbol rate time and space dependant. During the tutorial, a number of cross-layer mechanisms will be introduced whereby the physical, the medium access control (MAC) and the IP layers share knowledge of the channel dynamics in presence of ACM. The cross-layer design approach allows further improvements on packet data admission, scheduling and policing to maximize both capacity and user satisfaction while meeting QoS constraints","PeriodicalId":335831,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116632095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tripole array constitutes three mutually perpendicular dipoles all with their centers at the same location. This antenna adapts to desired user polarization as well as angle of arrival. It minimizes bit error rate (BER) better through polarization diversity when desired user and other interfering users arrive from the same direction or are very close to the desired user direction but with different polarizations. Simulation results show that the array, with minimum bit error rate approach, provides significant performance gain in terms of smaller BER over standard minimum mean square error (MMSE) approach.
