An example is audio communication in bicycle platoons: cyclists ride in a cluster, but may be spread over hundreds of meters and their spatial arrangement can vary, leading to volatile links. In this work, we showcase a novel implementation of VoIP that was tailored for a MANET composed of embedded devices installed in bicycles, operating over multicast. We describe the architecture of our system, which builds on off-the-shelf hardware and software, and list the parameter values that result in reasonable audio quality. Preliminary results show that high packet delivery ratios (above 70%) can be attained with our system in platoon-riding conditions, despite no link (or network) retransmissions.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"685 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115833775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since they are deprived of their auditory senses that would have provided important cues to dangers, they are at a much greater risk of being hit by cars or other vehicles. In this article, we present PAWS, a smartphone platform that utilizes an embedded wearable headset system mounted with an array of MEMS microphones to help detect, localize, and warn pedestrians of the imminent dangers of approaching cars.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116166662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regard, we demonstrate an assistance system that helps administer a taxi ride for the visually impaired person. Our system consists of a wearable camera fit on the user, and which communicates with a smartphone app. The camera device uses computer vision to detect obstacles and navigate the person, and relays the information to the smartphone app. The app integrates that information with a taxi scheduling service on the phone. The interaction between the user and the phone is carried through speech and audio instructions. The app administers a taxi for pickup when the user clicks the screen. The person walks to the designated pick-up point and the taxi is identified using pre-registered WiFi and/or Bluetooth IDs.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128096579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce the modulation/demodulation scheme and radar processing and discuss potential challenges for such dual function waveform in a realistic environment. Compared with existing proposals of using regular OFDM waveform as joint radar and communication waveform, the proposed multi-carrier modulated FMCW decouples the radar bandwidth from the communication bandwidth, and may achieve automotive radar specification with less requirement on analog-digital conversion and baseband processing bandwidths.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129947285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe the measurement setup using readily available hardware and open-source software. Based on periodic beaconing, the course of the received power along a characteristic route has been recorded. With the help of accurate GNSS positioning the test drive has been reconstructed in simulation. This approach offers the possibility of directly comparing the simulated and measured received power and hereby evaluating the performance of the environmental diffraction model. The outcome of the simulation shows good accordance with the measurements. In contrast, a comparative 2D simulation fails to recognize characteristic drops in received power. Furthermore, we investigate the dependence of the model’s accuracy on elevation models of varying horizontal resolution, indicating overpessimistic results when using coarsely resolved datasets.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125394458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this work is to describe the sounder architecture, primary data processing technique, achievable system parameters, and preliminary measurement results. We measured the signal propagation between two passing vehicles and characterized the signal reflected by a car driving on a highway. The proper operation of the channel sounder is verified by a reference measurement performed with an MMW vector network analyzer in a rugged stationary office environment. The goal of the paper is to show the measurement capability of the sounder and its superior features like 8 GHz measuring bandwidth enabling high time resolution or good dynamic range allowing an analysis of weak multipath components.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116982794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That is also because of the growth of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the necessity for cost-effective large-scale trials. In this contribution, we will focus on the INET Framework and how we re-factor its single-thread code to make it run in a multi-thread fashion. Our parallel version of the INET Framework can significantly reduce the computation time in city-scale scenarios, and it is completely transparent to the user. When tested in different configurations, our version of INET ensures a reduction in the computation time of up to 43%.","PeriodicalId":335017,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134003583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
