The HF channel is characterized by multipath propagation and Doppler effects which affect the bit error rate. A good way to fight jointly against intersymbol interference and fading environment without increasing the frequency band is to introduce modulation diversity (/spl pi/ constellation) in a multicarrier system. The aim of this paper is to show that such a system associated with a real channel estimator and soft decoder (convolutional turbo decoder) can increase sensitively the transmission performance comparatively to classical modulation. We also demonstrate that a well suited soft decision suboptimal receiver matched to modulation diversity can keep reasonable complexity.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. In addition to providing range extension for MSE, the DAMA algorithm is shown to allow more efficient bandwidth usage and reduced latency times for calls by allowing Secure, Mobile, Anti-Jam Reliable Tactical Terminals (SMART-Ts) to establish direct connections independent of the network topology. An object-oriented simulation of MSE enhanced with DAMA-capable SMART-Ts using the OPNET simulation tool is described and the utility of the DAMA approach is demonstrated. Some of the features of our models of MSE/DAMA networks are discussed and it is shown that applying DAMA techniques results in better utilization of satellite resources while meeting grade of service (GoS) requirements. Using this set of models, improvements to the DAMA algorithm such as making it interoperable with asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. The services of the original design are voice, data, fax and paging throughout Southeast Asia, China and India. In this paper, we present a supplementary design, which called ACeS Multi-media System (AMS), for the original ACeS to offer some more narrow-band multi-media services such as Internet, Intranet and ISDN services to mobile or fixed users thus to make it more competitive in the market. The paper discusses the system description, frame/burst formats of satellite transmission links, design of the combining scheme of turbo codes and QAM modulation etc. This system can also be modified for military communications.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. For public broadband networks to be effective for defense and disaster recovery multimedia communications, they must dynamically recognize some connections as having greater importance than others and allocate resources accordingly. A new approach to connection admission control is proposed that uses an upper limit policy to optimize the admission of connections based on the weighted sum of blocking across traffic classes. This optimization approach can be used for arbitrarily large networks and numbers of traffic classes and results in a very simple algorithm that could be implemented on standard network hardware. This work is also the first to demonstrate that the use of an upper limit policy is superior to traditional approaches of adding extra capacity or partitioning capacity, both in the amount of resources required and in sensitivity to load variations. An upper limit policy is also shown to be much faster to implement where a large overload occurs from a disaster event.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. In many cases it is possible to employ well-known sequences with desirable properties for use in synchronization. In some cases, however, to remove the overt signature that the repeated use of these known sequences causes, pseudo-random sequences are required. The conventional method of choosing such pseudo-random sequences relies on an exhaustive search algorithm. However, the computational requirements for a search of moderate length sequences are immense. In practice, for sequences of moderate length, the usual procedure is to evaluate sequences generated at random against several well-defined criteria. We present a computationally efficient method for deriving PSK sequences with good properties for signal detection and channel estimation. From an initial random sequence, a gradient descent algorithm is used to iteratively improve the sequence, based on the evaluation criteria. This algorithmic approach is shown to reduce the time required to generate a set of sequences, meeting the specified performance criteria, by more than two orders of magnitude in some cases. The method is particularly applicable to the design of pseudorandom sequences for preamble and training segments in serial-tone HF waveforms. Although the technique is general in nature, examples provided focus on the design of 8PSK sequences for serial-tone HF waveforms.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. WLANs, though, present a complex and challenging environment for implementing such security services since these services may deplete the limited network resources and increase the burden of supporting quality of service for multimedia applications. Consequently, a broker is needed to mediate proper security considering inputs such as user security requirements, user security literacy, available network resources, and security routines performance. In this paper we introduce a security broker that we have designed to fulfil these complex mediation needs. This broker is implemented in software and tested in a wireless LAN testbed. The reported security broker design and implementation considers the wireless LAN environment as well as the multimedia applications' quality of service requirements such as delay and throughput. We also introduce an inline encryption/decryption software that encrypts/decrypts traffic on the fly. Our experiments show that in cases where relatively modern computers are used with properly chosen standard encryptors, then such computers can sustain the throughput and security requirements of interactive multimedia applications for WLANs such as telephone-quality audio, video conferencing, and MPEG video.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. The satellite channel is modeled as combination of Rician fading and shadowed Rayleigh fading channels. The nonlinear Fokker-Planck method is employed to analyze the first-order PLL (phase locked loop) performance. Phase noise is modeled as Tikhonov distribution. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. The simulation results for BER performance with phase noise are shown in terms of many system parameters such as SNR, the number of users in a beam, and standard deviation of shadowing. From simulation results, it is concluded that the phase noise substantially degrades system performance of the CDMA-based satellite system. This can be interpreted that detection loss (decrease of SNR) due to phase noise leads to degradation of system performance. The considerations in this paper can be applied to a satellite link design for a CDMA-based satellite system.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. IEEE Military Communications.
