They should be able to perform the functions for which they are designed whenever they are called upon to do so, especially in cases of nuclear emergencies. Motor operated valves (MOVs) are one of such very important equipment. They are used to seat and unseat valves which perform safety related duties in nuclear power plants. Most of the failure of the valves reported are due to the incorrect sizing and selection of the actuator motor. The problem is that the valves are mechanical equipment with their associated mechanical terminology, yet the electrical engineer is more often than not called upon to size and select the appropriate motor required to drive the valve in order to perform the desired functions. This paper presents a background on motor operated valves in order-to provide a starting point for electrical engineers stepping freshly into this field. It reviews the procedure to select the correct size of the actuator motor to match a given application. Examples of typical selection procedures are provided.","PeriodicalId":334874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon '95. Such an on-chip hardware capacity motivates the development of a new generation of faster and more intelligent computers incorporating efficient techniques to handle computations. The prevalent concepts of control-flow and data-flow to build computers have their limitations and weaknesses in exploiting parallelism to the utmost limit. Therefore, a novel technique to handle parallel computations, called associative dataflow, is presented in this paper. In the proposed model of computation, the need for tokens is eliminated. The processing of a dataflow graph is accomplished in two phases. (1) The search phase: assuming the dataflow graph to be upside-down, each node at the top of the hierarchy, called the parent, looks for its descendants, called children, which are at the bottom of the hierarchy. This facilitates each node to know its data and destination(s) in the system. (2) The execution phase: the operations are performed, but now there is no delay in creating or matching tokens. This approach eliminates the major bottleneck in dataflow architectures, concerning the matching of tokens and the enhancement of their performance. Preliminary results have indicated a faster execution speed and higher ALU utilization for the proposed model compared to the conventional dataflow model. These results forecast a promising future for the associative dataflow model of computation.","PeriodicalId":334874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon '95. To enhance the analysis of aerial observations, CAP has proposed broadcasting amateur television from aircraft cockpits to ground receiving stations, However, because of the large bandwidth required for video transmission and the low transmitter power available the range of video transmission is very limited. As an alternative to amateur television transmission, the paper develops a software based, continuous-tone, still image transmission system. A digitized color image at television resolution contains nearly one million bytes. Digital imaging is, therefore, not often implemented due to high storage or transmission costs. However, by employing a high quality image compression technique, images may be compressed from 1/10 to greater than 1/50 their uncompressed size without visibly affecting image quality. These compressed images can then be transmitted over a low bandwidth channel in a reasonable time. The major issues in developing the prototype system were the image compression and data transmission techniques. The selected image compression technique is based on the JPEG Still Image Data Compression Standard, known officially as ISO DIS 10918-1 or CCITT Recommendation T.81. The system's data link will use high speed (9600 bits per second) packet radio (CCITT X25). This system shows the JPEG image compression method is suitable for transmitting high quality compressed images over a low bandwidth channel in a reasonable time. Additional data compression is achieved through the use of V.42 bis data compression.","PeriodicalId":334874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon '95. Consider a cylindrical microstrip line cross-sectional configuration consisting of two concentric cylindrical dielectric substrates. Two arbitrary number C/sub 1/ and C/sub 2/ of infinitesimally thin arc strips of the arbitrary size (/spl alpha//sub 1//spl les/S/sub 1//spl les//spl beta//sub 1/) and (/spl alpha//sub 2//spl les/S/sub 2//spl les//spl beta//sub 2/) are clad on the dielectric cylindrical interfaces. The dielectric cylinders are characterized by real scalar permittivity /spl epsiv//sub i/ and permeability /spl mu//sub 0/ while the region outside of the dielectric cylinders is free space providing constitutive parameters /spl epsiv//sub 0/ and /spl mu//sub 0/, respectively. The two conductors are charged by V/sub 1/ and V/sub 2/ while the C/sub 0/ is grounded. The analysis is based on finite and infinite element methods and the quasi-static TEM mode approximation. The quasistatic TEM is essentially a low frequency model of a microstrip line that can be concerned with the existence of electric and magnetic fields separately. The microstrip line system is analyzed with both the ordinary finite to discretize the /spl Omega//sub i/ bounded region and global exterior infinite element to cover the /spl Omega//sub 0/ unbounded domain. The potential and field distribution in the cross section of the microstrip line are determined by minimizing the energy functional of the Laplace's equation using the variational principle. Then it can be used to calculate the Maxwellian capacitance or inductance matrix per unit length of the microstrip line. The parameters of the microstrip line can be determined in terms of the capacitance or inductance matrix. The equivalent circuit for the coupled microstrip lines is developed and its application to the solution of wave propagation modes is demonstrated. In this investigation, the accurate solution of characteristic impedance, effective dielectric constant, attenuation, coupling, propagation constant, and so on has been analyzed in terms of the capacitance matrix. These parameters are important in the design of microstrip lines, strip lines, and transmission lines.","PeriodicalId":334874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon '95. This method has proved to be quite laborious and the execution time is intensive. An alternative method of designing image recognition systems is needed. The goal is to design a reliable, compact, high speed, low cost recognition system. One way to reach this goal is to design the image recognition system via a massively parallel hardware architecture. The present study researches the feasibility of developing a generalized procedure to design unique image recognition systems. These unique image recognition systems will incorporate special purpose processors that will work at a speed that is several orders of magnitude faster than software image processing systems. These systems have great application perspectives, especially in the robotics and industrial fields. One of the most important aspects of these systems-is the unique compact size as compared with other systems of comparable speed. Also, these systems are independent modules that will output, in most cases, a signal to a controller without the need to use a conventional computer or processor. The procedure to be developed provides a new way of designing an image processing system by concentrating on modularity and massive parallelism. Combining the modules will provide a special purpose processing system that achieves object detection and recognition at a high speed not even possible on a general purpose supercomputer. The other advantages include the low cost of implementation and the compact size of the whole system.","PeriodicalId":334874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon '95. The microstrip line consists of two dielectric layers with two infinitesimally thin perfectly conducting strips clad on the dielectric layers. It is worthwhile to note that in this development the assumption that the finite transverse dimensions of the microstrip line structure are smaller than the operating wavelength resulting in the wave velocity is no longer independent of frequency and the quasi-static TEM mode approximation analysis can be provided. Coupled microstrip transmission lines have become an attractive means of microwave integrated circuits, namely filters, directional couplers, matching networks, delay lines, and equalizers. The system of coupled transmission lines has also found the use to connect electronic subsystems on modern avionics systems such as aircraft and missiles consisting of large closely coupled cable bundles. In the design of microwave integrated circuits MICs requires a knowledge to predict the electrical transmission properties of microstrip lines. These are namely characteristic impedances, eigenvectors, normal mode propagation constants, and network functions of the lines. A system of coupled microstrip transmission lines is analyzed with both the ordinary finite and infinite elements to solve for the potential and field distributions in the cross section of the microstrip line. A variational principle is applied to compute the Maxwellian capacitance or inductance matrix per unit length of the line. This analysis has the advantage of straightforwardly identifying propagation modes. The parameters of the microstrip line can be determined in terms of the capacitance or inductance matrix. The system of coupled transmission lines is assumed to be uniform along its longitudinal z-direction. The equivalent circuit for the coupled microstrip lines is developed and its application to the solution of wave propagation modes is demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":334874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE Southeastcon '95.
