The network monitors the temperature in the Baltic Sea on different heights from the water surface down to the bottom. Unlike many other wireless sensor networks, this network contains both a wired and a wireless part. One of the major challenges is that the network is hard to access after its deployment and hence both hard- and software must be robust and reliable. We also present the design of an advanced buoy system featuring a diving unit that achieves a better vertical resolution and discuss remaining challenges of sensor networking in aquatic environments.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117075061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as the demand for a particular product goes up, it is possible to exceed the processing limit of the content provider. The use of multicast distribution technology can lower the processing needs of the content provider and the bandwidth needs of the network operator. However, it requires the introduction of security features (to prevent theft by non-purchasers) and distributed accounting features (to collect revenue from the multiple purchasers). We identify the parties that participate in a multicast session, either before the session or during it. We then discuss the communications paths and security requirements that exist among and within these parties, for the support of this secure, accountable multicasting. We present an enhanced multicasting architecture, which enables the necessary security and accounting features, while keeping the additional load on the routers at a minimum. We then extend the architecture to facilitate deployment of multicast in parts of the network where no \"native\" multicast support is available.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"213 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123067106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, IMS does not handle non-3G elements such as wireless local area networks (WLANs). In order to provide interconnection at the service layer between 3G and WLANs, interworking between IMS and WLAN is necessary. Extending IMS beyond 3G to WLANs is a crucial step towards the evolution of a seamless universal next generation wireless network, commonly known as 4G. In this paper, a novel architecture for service layer interworking between WLAN and 3G is presented. The architecture takes into consideration the interaction of WLAN Application SIP servers with the IMS call session control functions (CSCFs) and the extensibility of application servers (ASs) beyond the core IMS network. A WLAN AS is introduced into the IMS network and an SIP server into the WLAN. These act as interworking arbitrators and communicate with each other to provide service and session continuity. The main advantage of this architecture is its feasibility within the standard. It is also non-intrusive to the IMS core or the WLAN.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"PP 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126421771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is designed to overcome problems of high packet loss and route instability common in inter-vehicular communications. We implemented the proposed method as middleware supporting real-time packet transmissions such as VoIP, and evaluated the performance in experimental tests, including a 3-vehicle test on a public road. We obtained measurement results showing maximum packet loss lower than 5 %, compared to more than 80% with existing implementations of the ad hoc routing protocols OLSR and AODV. We also showed that it is possible to support good quality VoIP broadcasts at normal traffic speeds of from 40km/h to 60 km/h on open roads.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132518629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, in this paper, spatial diversity is exploited for locating stationary and mobile objects in the indoor environment. First, space diversity technique is introduced for small scale motion and temporal variation compensation of received signal strength and it is demonstrated analytically that it enhances location accuracy. Small scale motion refers to movements of the transmitter and/or the receiver of the order of sub-wavelengths while temporal effects refer to environmental variations with time. A novel metric is introduced for selection combining in order to improve location accuracy through the addition of spatial diversity upon two available location determination schemes. The results are evaluated experimentally against single antenna system for reception by using low cost wireless RF devices such as motes. Alternatively, the impact of the number of location determination devices in a probabilistic WLAN network based on pre-profiling of signal strength is analyzed and it is demonstrated analytically that location accuracy improves with the number of receivers used. Spatial diversity in terms of the antenna spacing of 2lambda is evaluated and shown to provide a reduction in location determination error between 30 and 40% when compared to a single antenna system.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125107308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system is aimed at providing a platform capable of meeting the monitoring requirements of the Water Framework Directive. The key parameters under investigation include temperature, phosphate, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, turbidity and water level. A Split TCP approach has been proposed to address this problem. In this approach, a proxy is employed at the boundary of wired networks (e.g. the Internet) and wireless networks (e.g. cellular networks, WLan or mobile ad hoc networks). This strategy significantly improves TCP performance. However, it does not maintain the end-to-end semantics of TCP. The loss of end-to-end semantics may cause problems to applications that rely on such a guarantee provided by TCP. In this paper, we introduce a novel technique called Semi-Split TCP to address the problem without sacrificing the benefits of Split TCP. We present the architecture and algorithms of the proposed technique; and give implementation, simulation, and analytical results to illustrate the feasibility of this method. Our simulation results demonstrate that Semi-Split TCP can achieve similar performance as Split-TCP without sacrificing the end-to-end semantics.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"4 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120915489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The promise of an unmanaged, self-configuring and self-powered wireless infrastructure, with a continuously decreasing cost per unit, attracts the attention of both final users and system integrators, replacing previously deployed wired solutions and opening new business opportunities. This challenge might be afforded by resorting to a complete system level design to jointly address and optimize all the involved aspects. Besides, the design guide lines need to be inspired by the application requirements rather than technology driven. Following this approach, this paper presents an overall solution focusing both on node, network and remote user interface issues. The proposed platform in finally applied to a realistic user defined scenario oriented to agro-food production phase monitoring within GoodFood Integrated Project. The results of the validation phase presented highlight remarkable advantages both in terms of cost and complexity reduction and experienced QoS enhancement as well and, consequently, validating the WSN technology adoption.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115485774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work we present TOGBAD a new centralised approach, using topology graphs to identify nodes attempting to create a black hole. We use well-established techniques to gain knowledge about the network topology and use this knowledge to perform plausibility checks of the routing information propagated by the nodes in the network. We consider a node generating fake routing information as malicious. Therefore, we trigger an alarm if the plausibility check fails. Furthermore, we present promising first simulation results. With our new approach, it is possible to already detect the attempt to create a black hole before the actual impact occurs.","PeriodicalId":333233,"journal":{"name":"32nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117275906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
