This paper proposes a SWoT framework in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) enabling cooperative discovery of sensors and actuators. A backward-compatible extension of the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) makes possible to use semantic matchmaking via non-standard reasoning to better characterize the resource discovery. The framework also integrates nimble data stream mining to detect and annotate high-level events through raw data gathered from the environment. A cooperative environmental monitoring case study in Hybrid Sensor and Vehicular Networks (HSVN) is presented together with experiments on a real testbed to assess feasibility and benefits of proposal.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116612632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulations performed with COMSOL Multiphysics show that the coupling efficiency between the waveguide and the photosensor is strongly affected by the presence of the passivation layer, and by thickness and refractive index of the transparent electrode of the photodiode. A first prototype has been fabricated using standard microelectronics techniques in a 6-masks process fiow. Electro-optical characterization, performed measuring the diode photocurrent with and without lighting the waveguide, shows the effectiveness of the optical coupling between diode and waveguide, and suggest its use for on-chip detection in lab-on-chip applications.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"70 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114000339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organic Electrochemical transistors, using an aqueous electrolyte solution, offer a unique set of advantages in the development of biosensor devices. In this paper, we report highly selective organic electrochemical transistor based immune-sensor by modifying the gate electrode with polyclonal anti-human Immunoglobulin G (anti-IgG) antibodies. Extremely low detection of Immunoglobulin G (IgG) at the femto-molar detection limit has been achieved.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114664218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The parallel request of wearable and wireless solutions, for the real-time monitoring in a non-controlled environment, has led to the implementation of a Quantitative Gait Analysis platform for the extraction of muscular implications features in ordinary motor action, such as gait. The here proposed platform is used for the quantification of PD symptoms. Addressing the wearable trend, the proposed architecture is able to define the real-time modulation of the muscular indexes by using 8 EMG wireless nodes positioned on lower limbs. The implemented system “translates” the acquisition in a 1-bit signal, exploiting a dynamic thresholding algorithm. The resulting 1-bit signals are used both to define muscular indexes both to drastically reduce the amount of data to be analyzed, preserving at the same time the muscular information. The overall architecture has been fully implemented on Altera Cyclone V FPGA. The system has been tested on 4 subjects: 2 affected by PD and 2 healthy subjects (control group). The experimental results highlight the validity of the proposed solution in Disease recognition and the outcomes match the clinical literature results.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123834732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thanks to their excellent spatial and time resolution, high particle rate capability and a close to 100% detection efficiency, GEM detectors meet all requirements for the upgrade of the CMS end cap. 144 large area trapezoidal triple-GEM detectors will be installed in 2019 in the first station of the end cap of CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the LHC. The features of the new GEM detectors will bring higher resolution of the muon transverse momentum to the first trigger level, lowering the rates in end cap region. This will allow to keep the same performance, both at trigger level and offline, as in the previous LHC runs despite the increased instantaneous luminosity of the colliding beams. In this contribution, after a general introduction and overview of the project, the design of full-size trapezoidal triple-GEM detectors wiU be described, followed by a detailed description of the quality control procedure. Six sites spread all over the world will partecipate to the assembly and quality control process. The INFN Bari section is one of those site since it successfully completed the commissioning of the labs and the validation of the test procedure.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122478969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It includes two main modules: a system-on-glass (SoG) and a disposable microfuidic chip. The SoG integrates, on the same glass substrate, thin film metal heaters and amorphous silicon temperature sensors to achieve a uniform temperature distribution (within ±1°C) in the heated area. Two polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic chips have been developed: a PCR-Chip for DNA amplification and a dsDNA-Chip for separation and selective isolation of a ssDNA from a dsDNA. The proposed system aims therefore to develop compact, low-cost devices that can implement multiple functions in biochemical procedures. In particular, the tested bioanalytical procedures are well suited for carrying-out an on-chip SELEX process, a combinatorial chemistry technique for the selection of aptamers.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131235232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Topically such events require avoiding waste of resources in environments where there are no people at the time of the disaster or where the damage is of low magnitude. To guide rescuers at the points of the building where there are users to help, we modeled and built an Internet of Things-based framework that monitors data and environmental parameters of interest and, if certain thresholds are exceeded, alerts the rescuers through a telephone call to emergency numbers. The hardware infrastructure is driven by a complex, flexible and adaptive software layer that behaves depending on a Complex Event Processing engine and a reflective middleware according to the rule based engine that manages data from the sensors and reasoning mechanisms of a knowledge base that models the given domain.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122875469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the others, organic field-effect transistors have been proven to work as highly performing sensors. Selectivity is achieved by integrating a layer of functional biological recognition elements, directly coupled with an electronic interface. The devices were shown to reach detection limits down to the picomolar (10−12 M) range with highly repeatable responses (within few percentage of standard deviation) even for hundreds of reiterated measurements. In this lecture recent developments in the field of organic and printable electronics implemented to probe biological interfaces will be discussed highlighting the importance of the interplay among disciplines such as organic electronics, analytical chemistry and biochemistry to reach a comprehensive understanding of the underpinning phenomena. It will also be shown that applications can lead to label-free electronic biosensors with unprecedented detection limits and selectivity. Notably, the extremely good sensing performance level can be rationalized by quantifying electrostatic and capacitance contributions characterizing the surface confined biological recognition elements interacting with their affinity ligands. Examples of the detection of clinical relevant biomarkers will be provided too.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115964802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key element of the ALICE upgrade is the construction of the new high resolution Inner Tracking System (ITS). It will be made of seven concentric detector layers based on a 50μm thick CMOS pixel sensor with a pixel pitch of 30 × 30 μm2 called ALPIDE. The upgraded ITS will be realized using more than twenty-four thousand ALPIDE chips organized in seven different cylindrical layers (called Inner and Outer layers) covering a total surface of about ten square meters. The main features of the new ITS are a low material budget, high granularity and low power consumption. The Hybrid Integrated Circuit (HIC) module is the building element of the four Outer Layers of the upgraded ITS and it is realized assembling together fourteen Monolithic Active Silicon Pixel Sensors with a space precision of the order of few microns. In this paper, after a brief overview of the ITS upgrade project, the construction procedure, the electrical characterization and the qualification tests on the Outer Barrel modules are presented.","PeriodicalId":332606,"journal":{"name":"2017 7th IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125704512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
