For the most part, Lincoln rejected his humble origins, especially as a manual laborer. Nevertheless, Oglesby allegedly accompanied Hanks to find old split rails at Thomas Lincoln’s former farm in Macon County, Illinois.3 Lincoln’s humble origins became an asset; rural and agricultural roots for political leaders were ever more important in an increasingly urban nation.
