The DC-DC power converter used as multiple voltage power supply, must have at least the same reliability of the governor itself, to avoid frequently failures and turbine emergency shutdowns. Project design and final user right equipment maintenance, play a main role in reliability and service life. All this is what the standard IEEE 1573-2003 calls the Environmental Interface and Environmental Interface Adaptation. An example of a power supply series of failures, lead to specifying new power converters, and how this changed the number of hydro turbine shutdown statistics. A case study of an hydro power plant is described.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123432776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Transducer with thermal Sigma-Delta modulator","authors":"V. C. Rosa, Amauri Oliveira","doi":"10.1109/I2MTC.2014.6860715","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/I2MTC.2014.6860715","url":null,"abstract":"This paper proposes a simple circuit topology to implement an A/D converter using thermal Sigma-Delta modulator with a thermoresistive sensor. Equations of the converter behavior are presented, and show their use for estimating temperature and thermal radiation. The influence of sensor parameters in the signal to noise ratio of the system are also presented. Simulation and experimental results are showed too. In this A/D converter, the measured variable is directly converted to digital by eliminating the classical stage of signal conditioning which the measurement variable is firstly converted to the electrical domain and then is made an analog to digital conversion. It is also shown that the output binary code has a linear relationship with the measured variable throughout the measuring range. The major contributions of this paper are: the proposal for a thermal A/D converter simplified topology and a theoretical deduction of the static behavior of the converter that relates the sensor parameters and the obtained result with the measured variable. This approach can be useful as a basis for a smart A/D converter design in any temperature or thermal radiation range allowed by the sensor and can be extended for measuring fluid velocity.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123669288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theoretical energy conversion and the performance parameters have been investigated and compared with respect to design and geographic location using a simulated model. In particular, the effects of the global radiance, of the ambient temperature and of the hours of sunshine on the power and energy production are assessed. The obtained results show that the advantages of the thermoelectric modules use are less significant when the locations considered are very distant from the equator.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123760979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To increase the quality of the resin casting process, a research cooperation between the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering and Economics of the University of L'Aquila and the Bticino Legrand group has been started, with the main aim of developing a non- invasive and reliable measurement procedure, for a fast characterization and the identification of possible nonconformity for cast resin windings. The proposed procedure is based on the SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analysis), with some improvements for the correct evaluation of the correlation coefficients among different SFRA profiles. In this paper, the experimental results that have been obtained by applying the SFRA to windings of different sizes are presented, and some faults have been investigated.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125299505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characterization spreads from DC measurements up to measurements at RF frequencies. For the higher frequency range scatter parameter measurements using network analyzers (NA) are widely used to characterize the components. However, most NAs are 2-port NAs making the characterization of a n-port time consuming as all ports have to be connected in the course of the measurement process. In this paper we present a methodology to estimate the full scatter matrix of a passive 4-port by means of local 2-port measurements only.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126940049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A comercial frame is used, a mathematical model for the quadrotor is developed and its parameters determined from the characterization of the unit. A 9 degrees of freedom Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) equipped with a barometer is calibrated and added to the platform. Sensor fusion is done by two modified Extended Kalman Filters (EKF): one combining data provided by IMU and the other also including the information provided by GPS. A reliable estimation of the state variables is obtained. Three states representing systematic bias in the accelerometer measurements are also added to the EKF, which improves the inertial estimation of the position. A stable autonomous platform is achieved.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122741822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their high efficiencies, high power and energy densities and short response times make them ideal to sustain the flexibility needs for a smarter grid to integrate renewable sources and favor active user participation. Being complex systems, batteries need to be adequately modeled to be effectively integrated into the grid. Multiple models exist in literature, targeted to describe different aspects of battery behavior, with the issue being model validation: the extensive testing required generally involves long measurement sessions, which benefit greatly from measurement process automation. We propose a flexible and easily programmable Automated Measurement Station (AMS) for battery testing. The software to interface with and control the instrumentation is realized as blocks in Labview, providing an easy environment to customize battery tests for the specific application. Moreover, in this paper we provide application examples for the realized AMS, with related steps for battery characterization tests setting-up.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122767249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) benefit from both synchronization and localization as it enables the sensor node to fuse measurement data with temporal and spatial information. The lower communication layers of WSNs are often based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, whereas only for Ultra-wideband (UWB) timestamping and ranging abilities are specified. The Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) physical layer, recently introduced into IEEE 802.15.4-2011, is another promising modulation scheme for highly accurate timestamping. This paper presents a timestamping receiver architecture for 802.15.4 CSS based on a Delay-Locked Loop and subsample interpolation (chirp generation) using the CORDIC algorithm. This architecture generates arbitrary subsample- and frequency-shifted chirp templates on the fly and therefore does not require large correlation filters. Simulations of the timestamp performance show that the proposed architecture offers equal performance as post-correlation delay estimators, yet with a significantly reduced amount of multipliers. This facilitates the implementation of precision clock synchronization and localization into low-power wireless sensor nodes.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122758812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flat cutting and circle cutting wingtip shapes were researched through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation and air flow experimental tests for two different cross-sectional shapes of the APT flow sensor. The results show that the flat cutting wingtip shapes are better than the circle cutting, the wingtip width or wingtip arc radius of 0.3 mm are better than 0.5 mm, and the circumscribed circle diameter 8 mm is better than 6 mm as the cross-sectional shape is the same. Flow field analysis indicates that the wingtip shape determines the position of fluid flow separation, so affects the shape of the vortex area downstream of the detecting tube. The ratio of vortex width and length can express the vortex shape. The experimental data show that the smaller the ratio, the better the linearity and the repeatability of the sensor.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121864066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kanoun","doi":"10.1109/I2MTC.2014.6860813","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/I2MTC.2014.6860813","url":null,"abstract":"Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and Frequency-Domain Reflectometry (FDR) are typical methods for cable fault location. Because the TDR method has the worse signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is difficult to detect soft cable faults (frays, chafes, and joints) which cause tiny impedance changes in the cable and small reflected signals. The FDR method has better SNR than the TDR method because of using a power signal as incident signals and signal processing for cable fault location. However it is difficult to identify the type of cable fault. A new method using impedance spectroscopy (IS) for cable fault location is described in this paper. With the new method not only cable fault can be located, but also the type of cable fault can be identified. The periods of cable's impedance can locate hard (open and short circuits) and soft wire faults (frays, chafes and joints). The angle of the cable's impedance in low frequency domain can identify the types of the faults. A signal processing algorithm is developed to accurately locate the cable fault and provide enhanced resolution and range. The details and test results with IS system on realistic twisted pair lines are described. Only one single fault is detected in this work.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121871643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
