Various mobile applications (apps) have been produced and deployed to help these patients assume personal responsibility for their medications, without essentially looking for assistance from health centers or medical personnel. Despite the view that mobile apps can support self-management behaviour amongst diabetic patients, extant literature reveals that adoption and use has lagged behind. Various factors need to be considered to dispel the negative perception over acceptance and use of these apps to enhance adoption. This study investigated factors that influence adoption of these apps for improved diabetic conditions by patients away from hospitals and clinical personnel. The study was conducted in the city of East London, South Africa. Twenty diabetic patients on chronic medication and three health providers working with diabetic patients were asked to try the Diabetes: M app for a period of not less than two months. Interviews were held to investigate their perceptions of the diabetes management app. Findings from the study are critical success factors that include perceived value, perceived risks and perceived costs in diabetic apps which are believed to play a significant part in patients to influence their adoption and use of apps for their conditions management. Creating awareness of these apps also play a role in making the success of diabetes apps for widespread adoption.","PeriodicalId":331140,"journal":{"name":"2018 Open Innovations Conference (OI)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123093378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, an overview is done to look at transient signal reflections and distortions as well as signal integrity problems and its effect on TEM transmission lines. Considerations are also given to transient signal structure and its characterization, signal integrity and problems associated with it were reviewed. Transmission line effects, cross talk, and impedance mismatch effects on the integrity of signals that move on the transmission lines are analyzed. With high speed digital signal transmission, even the shortest passive printed circuit board tracks suffer from transmission lines effects. It is a widespread belief that all electronic products have the same configuration; there are drivers that output signals to receivers through interconnect. As a transient signal travels down the transmission line two fields are associated with it, the first being magnetic field associated with the current and second being an electric field associated with the voltage. When such signal encounters discontinuity in the characteristic impedance of the TEM line, it reflects backward. The reflection back and forth within the transmission line will translate to standing waves or sustained resonance thereby introducing ISI, inter-symbol interference.","PeriodicalId":331140,"journal":{"name":"2018 Open Innovations Conference (OI)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124468865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Automation of business processes can also be used to the benefit of decision making in the selection and placement of the students. This will assist in attracting best first-time entry University students, eradicating human errors, and enforcing rules and regulations as stimulated in student admission and selection policy document. School of Science and Technology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has for years, been admitting students who apply for admission by manually allocating space and rejecting applications. This paper presents an innovative software solution for student selection and placement. The solution processed the same end-user data faster and generated accurate and valuable information for good decision making as compared to the manual system method. The results showed that the manual system had discrepancies and caused difficult-to-trace errors that produced incorrect and erroneous results.","PeriodicalId":331140,"journal":{"name":"2018 Open Innovations Conference (OI)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130336861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existence of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (HWNs) allows mobile users to be always connected and have access to network services and applications. However, to provide seamless intersystem handover remains a challenge, since mobile users' still experience lengthy handover delay. This is mainly because, previously proposed handover algorithms fail to predict the future values of the received signal strength (RSS). This led to extensive handover delay due to lengthy handover discovery process. Furthermore, these previously proposed handover algorithms only expresses scales of relative comparison and do not deal with decision problems of fuzziness and uncertainty that comes with the use of multiple parameters. These handover algorithms have fixed weighting matrix and therefore, could not adapt to the change of the network conditions and user's preference. As a result, these handover algorithms still experience erroneous network selection. Consequently, in this paper, an intelligent Intersystem Handover (IH) algorithm was designed by integrating Grey Prediction Theory (GPT), Multiple-Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Numerous computer simulation results confirmed that the proposed IH algorithm shortened handover delay as compared with Fuzzy Logic Based vertical handover (FLBVH) algorithm and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) algorithm.","PeriodicalId":331140,"journal":{"name":"2018 Open Innovations Conference (OI)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126201491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

WT fitness devices are small, easily portable and can be worn on clothing or any part of the body. These devices have an interactive display which allows its users to track and record their physical activities. With the advancement in technology for WT devices and the exponential consumer adoption rate, it is important to understand the various factors that would lead a consumer to adopt these devices for health and fitness purposes. There are many international studies, focusing on using smart watches and smart wristbands, to test the devices' features during physical activities. However, there is minimal research conducted from a South African consumer perspective around adoption of these devices. This research study uses the second generation of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) model to investigate the factors of adoption which would influence an individual's behavioural intention towards using a wearable device, focusing on health and fitness purposes. The results from the study identify Performance Expectancy and Habit as important factors of adoption of wearable devices for health and fitness purposes. An important outcome of the results however, indicates that individuals did not enjoy using their wearable devices during physical activity and therefore Hedonic Motivation was not shown as an important contributing factor for the intention to adopt these devices.","PeriodicalId":331140,"journal":{"name":"2018 Open Innovations Conference (OI)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127998117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
