Este estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la dieta del pez león en la zona costera de Holguín, Cuba. Para ello, se realizaron ocho campañas de muestreo durante el período abril-noviembre de 2016 en seis sitios costeros, incluyendo arrecifes frontales, artificiales y bahías, ubicados entre los 14 y 35 m de profundidad. Se analizó un total de 250 ejemplares con tallas entre 8 y 33 cm de longitud estándar. A través del análisis de sus contenidos estomacales se identificaron 27 tipos de presa, las cuales se agruparon en las categorías tróficas de peces, crustáceos y moluscos. Los peces fueron el componente preferencial en la dieta del pez león en base a los métodos numérico, frecuencia de ocurrencia, gravimétrico e índice de importancia relativa. Dentro de las presas, las especies de peces Holocentrus rufus y Monocanthus tuckeri fueron las más representativas. La dieta del pez león en el área de estudio reflejó la disponibilidad de las presas en cada sitio, lo que sugiere que es un predador oportunista (Índice de Levin = 0.91). No se encontró diferencias estadísticas en relación a la similitud entre los sitios de muestreo a partir del aporte del peso de los diferentes componentes consumidos.","PeriodicalId":33102,"journal":{"name":"NOVITATES CARIBAEA","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2019-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44340588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work we expand the former list of species and bibliography, update the taxonomic classification and provide an assessment on Chilobase records. A new intensive literature review was performed and both recent and formerly overlooked myriapodological works were included. The treatment of supraspecific taxonomic ranks was updated and follows Chilobase 2.0. This catalogue lists 4 fossil taxa as well as 24 extant species of centipedes from Hispaniola, 9 of which are endemic. For each extant species considered, there is information on Hispaniolan synonymies and geographic distribution. Included are some clarifications on synonymies and locality problems, and species with uncertain taxonomic status are indicated. Chilobase 2.0 was tested for completeness and accuracy. We propose several updates, grouped by incorrect species records, records not backed by known literature and species not under their currently accepted synonym. We also recommend chilopodologists to maintain active collaboration and send their updates to this useful database.","PeriodicalId":33102,"journal":{"name":"NOVITATES CARIBAEA","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49248229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este trabajo se propuso determinar la distribución y abundancia del Pez León en diferentes sitios de muestreo en la zona costera de uso turístico de Holguín. El estudio se realizó en ocho campañas de muestreo durante el período abril-noviembre de 2016. Se seleccionó un total de siete sitios de monitoreo distribuidos en dos municipios de la provincia Holguín (Rafael Freyre y Banes). Se determinó la abundancia promediando los valores de cada recorrido lineal (individuo por cada 100 m2). Se determinó la talla y el peso por estación de muestreo con una cinta métrica y una balanza digital. La comparación múltiple de medias se realizó por PERMANOVA con 10 000 permutaciones empleando la distancia euclidiana. Se registró un total de 365 individuos. El sitio con mayor densidad fue Playa Blanca, con 12.42 ind/100 m2 y el de menor abundancia playa Don Lino, con 3.66 ind/100 m2, detectando solamente diferencia estadística entre este sitio con el resto de los sitios monitoreados. El mes con mayor densidad en el año de estudio fue abril, con 13.14 ind/100 m2, registrándose diferencias estadísticas significativas en cuanto a la abundancia entre este y los meses de mayo (6.42 ind/100 m2), julio (7.28 ind/100 m2) y agosto (6.71 ind/100 m2). La comparación de la abundancia poblacional entre años del Pez León, registrada en el 2016 con años anteriores demuestra diferencia estadística entre los años 2013 (p<0.001) y 2012 (p<0.01).","PeriodicalId":33102,"journal":{"name":"NOVITATES CARIBAEA","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42996511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Latta","doi":"10.33800/NC.V0I12.79","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33800/NC.V0I12.79","url":null,"abstract":"Avian frugivores are of great interest to ecologists because they play an important role in ecosystem functioning, and can serve as important components in habitat restoration. In the Neotropics, observational studies have demonstrated the importance of a variety of fruit trees to numerous bird species, but undoubtedly other tree species exist that are a key resource for birds. I explored the relationship between Trema micrantha (L.) Blume, which produces superabundant fruit nearly continuously, and its disperser assemblage in Hispaniolan pine forest and montane broadleaf forest in the Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic. In 174 hours of observation at sixteen trees I recorded 513 visits by nineteen species of birds. Birds did not visit Trema in numbers reflecting their relative abundance in each habitat. The most frequent consumer of Trema fruit was the migratory Cape May Warbler, Setophaga tigrina (Gmelin, 1789), but other frequent visitors included the Black-throated Blue Warbler, S. caerulescens (Gmelin, 1789), and the endemic Palmchat, Dulus dominicus (Linnaeus, 1766), and Hispaniolan Highland-Tanager, Xenoligea montana (Chapman, 1917). I recorded 85 aggressive interactions among nine species of birds in Trema trees, with female Cape May Warblers involved in most of these. There was no evidence that Trema was dependent on any one species of bird for dispersal of its seeds, and despite the large proportion of visits by the Cape May Warbler, I found no evidence that any species of bird was dependent upon fruit from Trema. Rather, because male Cape May Warblers dominate females and defend nectar sources in these habitats, I suggest that for female Cape May Warblers, these scattered Trema trees represent a known, reliable, and accessible source of food which they can defend. Trema trees will benefit these bird species as a food resource, but may also function as a target for many other birds moving across the landscape, thereby facilitating the dispersal of a wider variety of seeds and the restoration of deforested sites.","PeriodicalId":33102,"journal":{"name":"NOVITATES CARIBAEA","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42911839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
