The rate of lipid peroxidation in the liver was determined in vitro by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test, and by conjugated diene measurement. Palm oil supplementation significantly reduced (p<0.05) the rate of lipid peroxidation in the liver of rats fed 5% cholesterol, compared to the rate observed in the liver of rats fed 5% cholesterol diet without palm oil. On the other hand glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly increased (p<0.05) in the liver of rats fed palm oil supplemented diet compared with those fed cholesterol diet without palm oil. The study suggests that palm oil feeding could be a veritable nutritional tool in the prevention of lipid-induced oxidative damage as usually observed in atheromatous plaque.","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131340390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It effects intestinal cholesterol absorption and intracellular transport and as such is an integral part of complex process of cholesterol homeostasis. The study of population data for the distribution of these SNPs of NPC1L1 has lead to the identification of six nsSNPs (non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphism). The in vitro analysis using the software MuPro and StructureSNP shows that nsSNP M510I (rs1468384), which involves A!iG base pair change leads to decrease in the stability of the protein. A reproducible and a cost-effective PCR-RFLP based assay was developed to screen for the SNP distribution amongst the North Western Indian population as a test case. This SNP has been studied in Caucasian, Asian and African American populations. Till date, no data is available on Indian population. The allele distribution in Indian Population differs significantly from that of other populations. Moreover on investigating the effect of this nsSNP on the plasma lipid levels in the general population we found a profound association of this nsSNP with higher ranges of plasma lipid levels.","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133016094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further intrathoracic migratory foreign bodies are a small but distinctive subgroup of missile injuries and should be removed when they need to be. We present an interesting case of an 18 year old male, who presented with trans-mediastinal migration of bullet which subsequently migrated from left hilum to right hilum. During surgery bullet was not found in the region of left hilum as was seen in the pre-operative X ray and CT scan. X-ray and CT scan in postoperative period revealed bullet near right hilum. Follow-up radiograph after six months revealed no further migration and patient continues to do well.","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129089511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, therefore, aim to make a comparative analysis of the microanatomy of the ascending aorta in pangolin and rat since the different ways of life of each mammal can influence the rate of blood flow through the ascending aorta at an given period. Following sacrifice of animals, aortae recovered from pangolin (n=6), and rat (n=5) were processed for histological studies. Tissues were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and orcein. The results of this investigation revealed differences in the microanatomy of the ascending aorta between pangolin and rat. The differences relate essentially to thickness of vascular layers, elastic fiber distribution, nuclear shapes, and perinuclear spaces. These differences correlate with animal size and perhaps modes of life.","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132516877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first cause for early mediastinal re-exploration after open heart surgery is the bleeding. In this review report we evaluated the major risk factors, the decision making for revision and the frequent complications after revision for bleeding under light of the literature. To reduce the risk for bleeding and blood transfusion rates, we recommend that discontinuation of the drugs affecting platelet functions, achievement of shortest CPB time possible, recurrent effective hemostasis before closure and faster elimination of hypothermia after arrival into the intensive care unit.","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124836211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Lipid profiles were studied in one hundred and fifty (150) hypertensive patients aged 30-59 years and thirty (30) ageand socio-economically matched normotensive controls using standard laboratory techniques. Results: Of the 150 hypertensive patients, 54% (n = 69) were females with majority (45.7%) in the age range 50-59 years while majority (53.6%) of hypertensive males were in the age group 40-49 years. Hypertensive patients have significantly higher lipid profile except for HDL-Cholesterol, which did not show any significant difference in the two groups. Among the hypertensive patients, total cholesterol was positively correlated with triglyceride (0.399,p < 0.05), LDL-cholesterol (r = 0.609,p < 0.05) and HDLcholesterol (r = 0.866,p < 0.05) and HDL-C positively correlated with LDL-C (r = 0.218,p < 0.05). In normotensive patients however, LDL-cholesterol was negatively correlated with triglyceride (r = -0.409,p < 0.05) while total cholesterol was positively correlated with LDL-cholesterol (r = 0.876,p < 0.05). Conclusion: Hypertensive Nigerians have significantly elevated plasma total cholesterol, Triglyceride and LDL-C but comparable HDL-C with normotensives. The clinical implications of elevated HDL-C in hypercholesterolemic hypertensive Nigerians are unclear.","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126671031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In other arteries, coiling is rarely reported because it remains asymptomatic and without clinical relevance unless inadvertently injured, as for diagnostic or monitoring purposes(1). The internal mammary artery is the most frequently used bypass conduit for the left anterior descending coronary artery in patients treated with bypass surgery, with excellent long-term patency rates. However, the mammary artery may also be affected by functionally significant stenoses. Most stenoses of the mammary artery are secondary to the surgical procedure at the anastomosis site, but atherosclerotic lesions may also develop(2). CASE PRESENTATION Our case was a 43-year-old male. His past medical history was significant for 3-vessel CABG and concomitant mitral ring annuloplasty at a different health facility 4 years ago. He was suffering from chest pain for 3 months. His coronary angiogram revealed stenoses in saphenous venous graft to the right coronary artery, in the native circumflex and left anterior descending arteries at postanastomotic segments. Percutaneous approach was planned for treatment. But during rehospitalization period, he suffered from fever and investigations identified a subacute bacterial endocarditis including the mitral valve (moderate mitral regurgitation and a vegetative mass of 1.9x0.9 cm on atrial face of mitral anterior leaflet). He was then referred to our clinic for reCABG and mitral valve exploration. His coronary angiogram showed a lesion of left internal mammarian artery graft consistent with coiling at right anterior oblique position (Figures 1&2).","PeriodicalId":330833,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129442664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
